Free Agency Suggestion
« on: December 17, 2013, 12:13:46 AM »
It's my first time going through free agency in some leagues and the process right now just screams for improvement.  So I propose changes and curious everyone's thoughts.

1) Once a player is listed with an opening bid, everyone has twenty four hours to make one bid and confirm interest in the player.  The opening bid will be considered the one bid allowed in the 24 hour period for that owner.  Each successive bid must be higher than the last by a minimum of $500k.

2) Once the 24 hour period is over, all owners that have placed a bid can place two more bids on the player.  Your second bid after the 24 hour initial period will be your final bid for that player.  That means a maximum of three bids total including the initial 24 hour period.

3) An owner that does not place a bid in the opening 24 hour period is restricted from bidding on that player.

4) The bidding ends once the highest bid has stood for forty eight hours.

Interesting. Is the point of this to prevent lowballers and drawing out a thread on a player longer than it has to at 500k intervals?

I guess this more closely resembles actual free agent bidding rather than this current method which is just kind of mindless upping of the bid to the lowest necessary amount to top the previous bid.  Only having a set number of bids requires people to be more thoughtful about their bids.  Maybe we only need to have two bids per owner actually.  The first bid to show interest and your second bid last and final.

Blind bidding would work best but the logistics and conflict of interest would be hard since owners run the league.

Maybe a increase of at least 10% of the previous bid would work with $500K being the minimum once $5 million is exceeded.

Yeah I was thinking more than that.  Like 20%.  So someone bids 20 million, the next bid would have to be 24 million.  Someone bids 40 million, the next bid has to be 48 million.  I think that works up until you get to about 60 million, next bid would have to be 72 million which is a big step up.

I dunno, just throwing out suggestions.  It's unfortunate ProFSL doesn't have a test league of some sort where things like this can be tested out.

Maybe 20% on the first $10 million then 10% from there. 20% is a big jump in a cap league.

I like the idea of less bids.... the worst part of free agency is the sheer number of posts all going on at once.  So, to cut down on that woudl be awesome.  I like the idea of placing a bid to establish interest, but would like to see the clock raised higher than 24 hours.  Maybe 36, just a little more to ensure that everyone has a fair shot at each player.

I also like the idea of establishing minimum raises, rather than a percentage, maybe a threshold for each "tier".

Minimum raise of $500K up to $5M
Minimum raise of $1M up to $10M
Then up the minimum by $1M for each $10M total threshold that you hit.

I like the minimums idea.  Can't get too complicated though.

One other thing I'd like to see is a rule restricting MLB contracts to players who are 23 and older or have MLB experience.  No MLB contracts to 17 year olds.  That's just annoying.
