New Idea
« on: October 26, 2018, 09:18:56 AM »
I have a new idea for a game. This time we do not look at the type of rider or his costs, but only at his country. All teams have to select 15 or 20 riders from all different countries... I guess the easiest way to select them is a kind of draft system. The manager need to control what countries he already has filled.

I know there will be a countries with a lot of good riders (France, Belgium, Netherlands, GB etc) Countries with a few good riders (Slovakia, Poland, SA) and maybe countries with only 1 good rider. Therefore it's free to pick your countries yourself and not by giving already the countries you should pick from...

It's a raw version, but what do you think about this idea?? (perhaps we can also inplement a maximum of cash to spent to make it more level)

Nice! I've been wondering about something similar for years.

It's not even problematic that some countries produce more riders than others. Let's have 3 Belgians and 3 Italians each, while only one slot being spent on any rider from eastern Europe.

If it's a draft, very easy to organize (identical to Country Roads?) but very tricky to provide fairness! With my first pick I'm getting you-know-who, while the rest of you are free to pick all the other talented Slovaks.

If it's an auction, it's more interesting, but also more complex to organize. It creates a curious case of "how far am I willing to ruin myself to sign you-know-who".

But if it's really really identical to Country Roads, i.e. includes relative scoring, that's ok again. It's certain you-know-who will outscore his compatriots, but it's almost as certain for Dumoulin, Alaphilippe, Valverde, Kristoff, Matthews, Valgren, or even Viviani.

Would more people enjoy such a game? Should I start designing it?

Sounds like a neat puzzle. Im up for it.

If you allow multiple instances of the same rider we could also have people just pay for a 24 nationalities  (or whatever) rider team (based on a budget of e.g. 10000 cq points).

Please see the new sheet for brainstorming assuming Country Roads relative scoring: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1x0SOLrswTiG7pjiEkLXtdzj5MpknRSvDgXhUx60pjnc/edit#gid=100499755

Observations:
  • North America hasn't had the strength OR the depth for a decade now, thus we'd have to treat Americas as one
  • Alps = Austria + Switzerland + Slovenia; if that seams too weak, we can break it up: include Slovenia in Commies, while the others join Luxembourg and Germany in something uniquely Germanic (Bob Jungels likes it!)
Total: 11-12 regions. Thoughts?

Making couples of countries can indeed tackle the countries with only one good rider. I would go then for Belgium, Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, GB and Australia as a single country.

Then we can have North America and South America as 2 seperate countries (Accepting that North is the weaker part, but you still have to find that pearl) Perhaps you can do the same with Africa and Asia.

Then perhaps Scandinavia and Russia and the former Sovjet countries as one. Balkan (Romania, Greece, Turkey and all former Yugoslav countries) Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary as one. And all German speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Swiss)

And for all who aren't categorized another group. So 16 different riders to pick.

You can make it a big draft, like Country Roads. That's easy to control as with a bidding you still need to check if a team who has the highest bid not have a rider from the same country or countrygroup.

Maybe you can add a maximum points cap. So if you choose you-know-who most of your points are spent and you need to search for the lower priced riders in the bigger countries.

Couldn't we find a format where everybody can be his native national team? Or a national team of himself.
So a game where I only can select Belgians.

Scoring should be like very relative to the cq country ranking.
Probably too complex, and I haven't got a startformat myself.
But perhaps worth it to drop it here.
