The auction
« on: November 13, 2017, 11:37:27 AM »
Well how do you feel itís gone for your team this year. Pretty expensive for many of the top riders on the whole.

From BMCís perspective I came in with two main targets and got both of them, although they cost a fraction more than I expected, thought a 3m bid would be enough for each of them. Anyway, they are young and now with me for 3 years so hope to show some return on that investment as soon as possible. Next year may be a year too early but weíll see. Lůpez should be outright leader now Aruís gone, thereís talk of Il Giro for him. Gaviria could well have more opportunities too now Kittel has gone, itíll be interesting to see how they race against each other.

I was also very keen on Ion Izagirre and Fabio Felline. Popped at the end for the Ion, managed to get my paws on the Italian cat, again slightly more than I wanted to pay but in Contadorís absence he should get more shots a week long races this coming year.

KŲnig at 210 could be a steal if he can recover his fitness and doesnít suffer any further issues with his knee. Fingers crossed.

Thatís pretty much all, although rather hoping Moser scores somewhat better than he did last year. Cosnefroy and Van Hooydonck are a bit unknown but Iíve paid some attention to Nathan for the last couple of years and picked him up in FYC last year.

Finally, although I am still active in the bargain basement bucket, thanks for Costa Garfield. Heís in training again after a few months off having looked at Strava, so with a bit of luck...

I'm a bit scared, Joel. With those long-term investments in youth, BMC will be very good in 2020, but not in 2018.
Last season you disappeared completely for a couple of months, and later admitted yourself it was because of poor results.
I hope you'll stick through thick and thin with us this time round.

I didn't have a real strategy this year, had a very long list of riders I was interested in (AKA Flo's Faves) and in the end pretty much all of my signings were on that list. I knew from the start I didn't want any really big names like Froome or Sagan but wanted 2 of Chaves, Aru and Zakarin, but that turned out to be unrealistic. I overpaid a little for some riders to get a 2-year contract for them, especially some of the youngsters like Martinez, Senechal, Minali and Venturini. I believe in their potential and I think this might work in my advantage in 2019, of course I could also end up regretting that decision.
I am under no illusions about my chances but I feel I've put together a nice team that I will enjoy following :toast:

It's been fun watching different team strategies for the draft.

For team Garmin, I wanted a young three year GC guy. I got BARDET, so I'm happy about that. He will team with PINOT, MOHORIC, and WELLENS at the top of my GC list. Perhaps a little help from ELISSONDE and MOLARD.

For sprinters I went with younger 2nd tear guys. BONIFAZIO, SBARAGLI, MARECZKO, to join my NeoPro from last year ACKERMANN.

To add depth I went looking for young guys coming off bad years and added CRADDOCK and DOMNROESKI.

I have no idea how this years NeoPro SIVAKOV will do. Young riders on SKY may not see the light of day, perhaps he'll shine next year.

Overall unless I get REAL LUCKY it's the middle of the pack for me.

I am happy with my team, got still some money left to get a few riders. It all depends how good the topriders of movistar preform this year. With 20 riders my team is average, as always its hard not to bid to much on the riders you realy want.

Say what you want, but I'm already kicking everybody's ass in terms of riders making the headlines:

I suspect he's drowning his sorrows about leaving BMC and joining Radioshack.

Saxo GM is half happy with his squad.
I still have to handle heavy contracts from last year as ENGER or BETTIOL, but the strategy remained the same for this year draft: invest for 2 years !!
I did not manage to get my GC top leader, but with ROGLIC, KONRAD or MCCARTHY I should get some points. For sure I lack a top sprinter (Groenewegen was too much for me !), but I will get help with my last years contracts.
Now hopefully I will be present for the one day race, and GC stages, and next season will be better !!
