however, the Phillies were unable to drop both Kipnis & Porcello because it would have caused a -$18m cap penalty.

*This doesn't affect my vote at all, just want to make sure I (and others) understand the releasing players rule:*

Unless I'm reading the rules wrong, Philly would still save cap this year and in future years when releasing both of those players:

Any player dropped before the trade deadline still has part of his contract count against the cap in the following manner: Current year: 90%, Next year: 60%, All future years after: 30%.

2B Kipnis, Jason, $5.5m (2019)
Kipness would still be owed 90% of his 2019 salary, so 5.5 x 0.9 = 4.95 = $5.0m (2019)
So a savings of $0.5m for 2019

SP Porcello, Rick, $6.7m (2022)
Porcello would still be owed 90% of his 2019 salary, 60% of his 2020 salary, and 30% of his 2021 and 2022 salary.
2019: 6.7 x 0.9 = 6.03 = $6.0m (2019) ... So a savings of $0.7m for 2019
2020: 6.7 x 0.6 = 4.02 = $4.0m (2020) ... So a savings of $2.7m in the 2020 season
2021 and 2022: 6.7 x 0.3 = 2.01 = $2.0m (2021) and (2022) ... So a savings of $4.7m in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

So it certainly wouldn't end up with a -$18m cap penalty. He would save $1.3m in cap for 2019 and more in subsequent years.

Again, not changing my vote as it's still an excellent move by Philly to unload that Porcello contract, but just want to understand the rules and see how others interpret them as well. I know you didn't write them Cliff, so we're all learning a bit here.

Thanks

There was some slight confusion about the (poorly written) rule for roster moves in playoffs.

Currently the rule says that before a new round starts (before playoffs start / between playoff rounds):
You can only swap a player from your Active roster to Inactive roster if he is injured. If you send him down, he can't be recalled until the end of that week/round.
You are also able to send a player down mid-round IF and only if he is injured. Again, he can't be re-called until the end of that round.

The rule change we are putting out there would be this:
ANY player can be swapped from your Active roster to Inactive roster between rounds, and it doesn't matter if he is injured.

This would alleviate some of the confusion that happened pre-playoffs where teams had to call up their injured players to have them on their "playoff roster" and then right away send them back down to the inactive roster because they were still injured... And then the players called up for them are the only ones that can be sent back down once that injured player is healthy again. (You can only do same player for same player swap).

While yes, this does allow teams to hold extra players on their Inactive rosters and use them for match-ups versus certain teams, it is more a change to remove the confusion of who is swapped for who.
As well as the confusion for pre-playoff moves... If say a Kevin Durant has been injured for a couple weeks before playoffs and a team had put him on the Inactive roster as a result, but he is scheduled to be healthy for the start of playoffs.
In our current structure, if the team doesn't call him up before round 1 and then send him back down to Inactive swapping for another player, Durant wouldn't be eligible all playoffs. Kind of a silly technicality.

Please post if you're not sure about anything. It's confusing, we know.

Any questions and input are appreciated and welcome.

Buckets of Dimes / Rule Change Proposal: Rookie Salary Scale
« on: April 10, 2019, 08:49:11 PM »

This also affects 2nd Round Picks:

All 2nd Round Picks will be a lower cap hit, resulting in all 2nd Round Picks being able to be free drops in the future:

Picks 21-30 = $0.9m

Picks 31-40 = $0.5m

Note for Round 1 Picks:

The value will be determined later with another poll. Starting at 25% less than real-life NBA salaries up to a max. of 50% less than NBA salaries.
So at #1 overall, it's not $9.0m per season, but would be $6.8m - $4.6m (25% off to 50% off in the example from $9.0m).

Gives teams with those high picks a chance to build around them in FA rather than be strapped with a rookie making a large chunk of their salary.

Also, given how FA went last season, it doesn't make a lot sense that a player like D'Angelo Russell should be making half the salary of those first few rookie picks. We're trying to even up the salaries from Rookies versus Free Agent acquisitions.

Any input is appreciated and valued. This is a poll, feel free to ask questions or voice your opinion.

We are all open to anything here, just throwing out ideas.

Because it's irritating me so much, can you make Jeff Carter a C (and not a D)?

Thanks :cheesy:
