UCI WorldTour: Races / Paris - Nice 2012
« on: February 22, 2012, 03:58:44 PM »
The 2012 edition of the Race to the Sun marks the debut of this brand new World Tour Fantasy League.
The route seems to favor the puncheurs, with the 5th and the last stage looking to be decisive for the final outcome of the general classification. Speaking of the last stage, it's going to be a special one - an individual time-trial on Paris-Nice' classic climb - the Col d'Eze.
Tony Martin won the race last year and he's back in France to defend his title in 2012. Even though the route doesn't seem to suit him like it did last year, he still could grab a nice amount of points for OP-QuickStep and tonymcf.
Martin is not the only performer from 2011 to return to the race in 2012, the entire podium from last year is back in France actually. RenoDelft and Bos would like for sure to see Kloden and Wiggins repeating last year's performances and bring their teams to the top of the rankings, but the competition will be tough. Six other riders from last year's top 10 will return this year, Samuel Sanchez, 5th in 2011, being the only one to skip the race this March.
A few other names that we should keep an eye on are Cunego, Menchov, Voeckler, Igor Anton, Coppel, Rolland, Chavanel, the Schleck brothers and Alejandro Valverde, who will make his return to the World's biggest cycling races after his 2 year ban.
