This is a request for a contract buyout, a process that requires a team to pay a 1.1% buyout tax. Here's what it entails:
$0.5m + $0.5m = $1.0m x 1.1 = $1.1m -- Buyout Amount $1.5m
Buyouts have a provision requiring the amount to be rounded up to the nearest $0.5m, which means the buyout amount is $1.5m. Here is the rule governing this process:
"Money owed to a player released under contract may be financed through a contract buyout. This can be done by adding up the total remaining contract amount, multiplying it by 1.1 rounded up to the nearest $500k."
Please let us know what you want to do.

You actually have until August 31st to complete a trade for Matt Cain. The 1st 72 hour period was for the player to complete the waiver process. Once that 72 hours is finished, if the player is claimed, you have an additional 72 hours to work out a trade with the team who claimed him. If more than one team places a claim, the team with the worst record (in your case, an NL team has priority over an AL team) has the right to work a trade. If no trade is worked out, you can revoke the waiver and keep him or do nothing and the player (and his contract) go to the claiming team (but you get nothing back--besides the lost of a contract).
If no one claims him, then you can trade him to whomever, as long as the player(s) you are receiving in return are on a (P-n/a) contract (and have not passed the threshold) or another player who has cleared waivers.
Even better. Thanks for the clarification Flash. Matt Cain Otb
