Title: Silver Spur Saloon
Post by: the_virginia_gentleman on April 13, 2014, 03:01:27 PM
Hello all and welcome to the (http://www.outwestmktg.com/images/products/Silver%20Spur%20Saloon_thumb.jpg)

As the new GM of the Spurs, I will be using this OP as a sort of state of the union and update accordingly.

At the time of my hiring, San Antonio is at a crossroads; we're not good enough to contend for Rings anymore, but we're too good to tank. So it is up to all of you to determine our direction. Pops, Duncan, Tony and I already went out for some delicious, Brazilian BBQ and  They understand that we are in a bit of a bind with an aging roster and no cap space to work with. We will do right by them whether they play out their contracts here or not.

Following up on that introduction, no one on our roster is safe and offers of all kind (draft picks, salary relief, vets, young potential) will be considered. We do not anticipate moving draft picks at this time but special cases will be considered. Feel free to PM with any and all interest, thank you.

Mid-(Off)Season Report:

With the Draft and the early part of the trade/Free Agent season gone, it's time to look back on the happenings here in San Antonio.

Looking to revamp an aging roster and armed with just two late seconds, management maneuvered aggressively on Draft night. When the dust settled, SA had brought in an impressive haul including #18 selection Adreian Payne, #32 choice Damien Inglis, 2nd year big Vitor Faverani and former #3 overall selection Otto Porter.

As Free Agency dawned and zero cap space to speak of, the San Antonio Airport lay dormant. It was not all dark though as their only Free Agent and #1 offseason priority, Draymond Green, was inked to a 4 year compact.

The Spurs were a bit noisier on the trade market, trying to nudge their way up to the big boy table but were ultimately reminded of their glaring lack of assets. Forced to bargain hunting, the Org. targeted younger pre-breakout players and happily came away with versatile Forwards Sergey Karasev + Austin Daye while adding Guard depth with the addition of Dwight Buycks.

Early returns have looked good as Excite-Buycks, Daye-Man(Champion of the Sun), PayneTrain, and Ottomatic all fared well at the Summer League. After shedding 3 years from the average age of our team, down to 26.2, we are still not done as rumors of a big deal have been floating around for a few days now. The Spurs also expect things to pick up in Free Agency soon as we've now entered the clearance rack stage.

Stay tuned for all happenings Spurs Basketball.

With the 5th pick in the 2015 NBAFO Draft, the Spurs selected PG Emmanuel Mudiay of Congo

The results are in, here's what they're saying about the new point man in San An..tonio

"I begged the Lakers to draft Emmanuel Mudiay" - Larry Brown

"I think he's going to be an absolute stud." - Chad Ford

"He's tall" - Greg Popovich

"Emmanuel Mudiay will point Spurs right way" - Woody Paige

"Mudiay is a potential all-star caliber point guard with great height, length and athleticism for the position." - Sam Vecenie

The team is ecstatic to nab one of the top talents in the draft and get a player they can truly build around in Mudiay. With a year of professional experience already under his belt combined with an advanced understanding of the game and his top notch work ethic the team plans to throw him into the fire right away.

:toast: Big hope is brewing at the Silver Spur Saloon

More Spurs offseason nuggets:

With the Spurs choosing to sit out the first round of Free Agency that is all we have for today.

The Spurs recently brought in a cadre of Guards for a private workout and came away impressed. The lineup consisted of Buddy Hield, Jamal Murray, Kris Dunn, Dejounte Murray, Malachi Richardson, and Denzel Valentine. Each, in their own way, could address the team's stated desires to improve in shooting, play-making and scoring.

With three picks in the lottery this year, the Spurs plan to make selections at all three spots but are keeping their options open to trade down or potentially for a player already under contract.

Team President VA Gentleman is choosing this time to take a week long vacation to re-charge the batteries but another workout for Forwards and Bigs has already been scheduled. Unfortunately, both Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram have rejected invitations at this time. Expect a full recap next week and a Free Agent primer to follow.

Welcome the two newest additions to the Spurs family, Jamal Murray and Dragan Bender!

At #4, the team selected Jamal Murray, a sweet shooting combo guard from Kentucky. Murray averaged over 20ppg as a true freshman last season and was one of the most prolific 3-point shooters in all of Division 1. A versatile scorer that can also handle the ball and distribute a bit, Jamal will pair with Emmanuel Mudiay and Jeremy Lin to form one of the more exciting back-courts in the league next season.

Following a brief trade up (7 to 6) the team selected the intriguing Euro big, Dragan Bender. Standing 7'1" but with plus quicks, fluidity and a solid shooting stroke, Dragan is the epitome of the modern day "4." Management had previous experience with his older brother and believe Dragan has top notch character and commitment to winning. As one of the youngest players in the NBA now, the organization plans to bring him along slowly and let his body mature but expect big things in future years.

The Spurs are happy to announce the signings of F Jae Crowder(Happy 26th Birthday, Jae!) and C Marcin Gortat. After mostly sitting out Free Agency in recent years, there was a push from ownership to add some veteranosity to the roster and really make a run at the playoffs. Having so few roster holes and oodles of cap allowed them to aggressively spend on the wing and big man market.

GM VA_Gentleman on the signings:"After finishing 28th in GP and dead last in Minutes Played last year we were focusing most of our attention on durable, steady vets. We had two empty spots in our starting lineup and were happy to fill the gaps with such high-character people and players. By our metrics we've added enough scoring punch to put us squarely in the race for the 8th seed in a highly competitive Western Conference while still maintaining our youth. Today was a good day for the future of this Franchise."

Breaking news: In a bizarre incident, probably over a gambling debt, Conference rival Bobby Portis broke into the team's practice facility yesterday and sucker punched star Forward Nikola Mirotic, breaking his face in the process. Mirotic is reported to miss 4-6 weeks, while rookie Lauri Markkanen is expected to get increased minutes in his absence. Only in America.

Season in Review: The Spurs came into the 2017-2018 season with optimism but expectations were tempered early when starting PG Jeremy Lin was again lost for the season in the very first game. Go to option Nikola Mirotic had already been sidelined from a locker room brouhaha and management was forced to make a script change to their goals for the season. The focus shifted to one of growth for a roster full of young-lings, un-established in the league. Baby steps were made by young guards Jeremy Lamb and Timothe Luwawu and big man Kevon Looney, rookie and backup PG Jawun Evans gained valuable experience. Others like one-time franchise hope Emmanuel Mudiay and newcomer Willy Hernangomez regressed, much to the coaching staff's dismay. But all was not lost, as a triad of 20 year-old's established themselves as the foundation of the team moving into 2018 and beyond. Sweet shooting forward Lauri Markkanen re-set franchise 3point records en route to a first-team all rookie nod. Hard nosed wing OG Anunoby knocked down shots and provided stellar individual defense, cementing himself in the starting lineup as the season wore on. Do everything Guard Jamal Murray, The Blue Arrow, was an honorable mention for most improved player and won team MVP while earning the Team Captain role.

Offseason Preview
Armed with max cap space and the #7 slot in the lottery, the Front Office was well positioned to add the 2 starters needed to propel the Spurs back into the playoffs. However, a franchise altering moment occurred when a lucky bounce on May 15th rocketed the team up to the #2 pick. The celebration was on. With a chance to add a franchise level talent to it's core of young starters, expectations have taken off and there is a real buzz in the fan base and community. The early speculation has all been Ayton and Doncic. "Shaq with a shot" or "The greatest European prospect of All-Time." The scouting staff is hard at work but many analysts feel it is a win-win no matter the result. The pro portion of scouts has already established a wish list of free agents and with all starters remaining under contract, the GM can be prudent in Free Agency. A big man and point guard depth headline the needs of the squad but are subject to shift pending the draft.

It was an exciting draft night here in San Antone. There was plenty of celebrating in the war room when they selected G Luka Doncic at #2 overall. The slick Slovenian is expected to play a major role right away and is a perfect fit in between Murray and Anunoby.

There was also business to go with pleasure as the team executed 2 draft night trades, acquiring a new starting center and moving back into the 2nd round to select B10 POY Keita Bates-Diop. With the deal for Wes Matthews, Free Agency is over before it began but the roster is in good shape and the team is well positioned to make a run at the big fish next summer.

All in all a great night for the franchise. A league pass darling for sure but will it translate to on-court success? Tune in next time to find out. And if you'll excuse us, we have a, uhh, business meeting with Ms. Poterbin.

A division title, a playoff series victory and a ROY  :win:. It was a breakthrough year in Alamo City. A popular sleeper heading into the season, the club exceeded all expectations with 59 wins and a game 7 exit in the playoffs.

Team MVP: Luka Doncic - brought home some hardware and over 5,900 points
Most Improved : Lauri Markkanen - a slow start due to injury but a hot February led to a 14ppg jump
Performance of the Year: Jamal Murray - a career high 46pts and 9 3's, good for 172.58fpts 12/29 @PHX
