Title: Edmonton and Minnesota Deal
Post by: Drew on July 08, 2013, 10:28:18 PM
Edmonton sends:
Devante Smith-Pelly, $0.2m (2013-14)
Brett Bulmer, $0.2m (2013-14)
Leland Irving, $0.4m (2014-15)
:ANA: 3rd Round Pick

Minnesota sends:
Jonas Hiller $4.5m (2013-14)

I take the risk that Hiller maintains his starting job for next season. I am high on Irving but want to win now so I move him plus two other higher end prospects as well as a pick to land a solid goalie. Thanks for quick negotiations norrya!  :toast:

:MIN-NHL: confirms this deal.

I hate giving up a starting goalie, but my team isn't built to contend for a cup right now. Irving is a risk, but Hiller has some risk involved with him as well. I also like getting the two specs and the pick. Thanks Drew. It was an easy deal!

I had to give this one some thought because I am not that convinced in Leland Irving's abilities as the both of you are. Despite his shaky start, Irving might have a solid future with the Calgary Flames, especially if the three guys ahead of him on the depth chart do not work out. But Hiller will at least get 30 starts next season with Anaheim. Also, I do not see how you can trade for a guy like Malkin and say that you are not trying to win now.

On the flip side, I really like the forward prospects and the cap space this deal gives Minnesota. 4 mill is a lot to save. And the forwards you are getting look to have solid NHL futures. But you cannot win in this league without goalies.

I am going to  :iatp:, but please realize that I am not particularly fond of this deal. I am not as convinced in Irving's abilities as you guys are, but there is enough pieces in the deal to make the risk of trading a potentially starting goalie worth it.

Not on the TC so I get to post this for the sake of hindsight.  :veto:

I wish I could give up a bunch of nothing for a starting goalie.  Come on TC how do you veto some of the trades recently and let this go through.

I honestly don't like the deal either. I know how valuable goalies are in these leagues. I think Drew needs to ship more off to Ryan.

I change to a  :veto:  I did not realize that Irving is not even signed. He is a UFA and belongs to nobody right now.

I set a precedence when I put veto on the Dubnyk deal and stood by it, so I would be quite the hypocrite to approve this:

Sorry i will also have to  :veto:

I honestly didn't know that either, I guess that is the base of the deal and changes it up but as I stated in the Dubnyk deal occasionally you have to take risks to get ahead.

But sometimes a risk doesn't look that positive... Dubnyk at least has a strong chance to be the starter in Edmonton. Irving still needs to sign somewhere, and the fact that Calgary has three guys ahead of him in the depth chart is brutal. I could see the deal being solid if the goalie going back was Gibson, but Irving looks to be a long shot with that revelation.

The point of the trade committee is to flag a deal that looks bad long term for an organization. We understand that some teams need to take a risk, but the risk needs to calculate the right way. The kuznetsov deal last season was a solid calculated risk as Minny had no plans of keeping the guys he traded anyway. This does not look like a solid calculated risk and in my mind, could destroy the Minnesota franchise in the future.

Irving is a bum.  I live in Calgary and he isn't even on the radar.

True, I meant that teams have to take a risk if Irving was signed. I also don't think it is a good deal if Irving isn't even signed on yet. I thought Irving would have had a good chance after spending a good time in their AHL system and playing well when given the chance in the NHL. Oh well, we'll try again another time haha.

I must have been attached to the WJCH Irving that I saw.

Deal vetoed!
