Title: David Garrard Retires
Post by: Mr.TradeKing on May 16, 2013, 04:44:20 AM
David G. (35) announced his retirement Wednesday stating that his bad knee was the cause. The Jets along with their QB situation continue to make the wrong kind of news. The Jets had figured to have a 3-way competition between Sanchez, Garrard, and rookie Geno Smith for the starting QB job. Even if David G. had not won the starting job, his presence was invaluable serving as a mentor to Geno Smith and as a capable veteran backup. His presence also afforded the Jets some flexibility on just what to do with incumbent starter Mark Sanchez who know figures to stay with the Jets. What is likely to get overlooked is the retirement's affect on Geno Smith who is now without a mentor. Obviously, many successful QBs haven't had the luxury of having a mentor as a rookie, but it most certainly helps and it would have given the Jets with another option besides indoctrination by fire if Smith proves unready to take over the starting job week 1.
