Title: How is Jamey Carroll the 8th best OF in the game?
Post by: h4cheng on August 29, 2010, 11:32:57 AM
Jerry Hairston is the 12 best OF. There is something wrong with our scoring system...

They are only worth that much if they are put in the outfield because of defensive stats.

So if BSX uses Carroll exclusive as an OF, then that's how many pts he'd get?

Correct... it is a way to cheat the system.  Honestly, the addition of defense into our scoring system hasn't worked as well as expected.  The defensive stats are the reason position players cannot change positions (non-Utility) throughout the week.

Anyway to change the eligibility requirements so that players like Carroll only qualify for 1 position?

I would rather take defense out of the equation.  It appears to have caused more problems than it is worth.

What are the minimum games played to qualify at a position, Colb?  This might be an easy fix, by just upping the minimum games played to qualify.

    *  Games needed from previous season for a player to qualify at a hitting position : 20
    * Games needed from current season for a player to qualify at a hitting position: 5
    * Starts needed from previous season for a player to qualify as a starter : 5
    * Starts needed from current season for a player to qualify as a starter : 5
    * Relief appearances needed from previous season for a player to qualify as a reliever : 5
    * Relief appearances needed from current season for a player to qualify as a reliever: 5
    * Use Fantrax's default position(s) even if player qualifies for at least one position based on above criteria: Yes
    * Note: If a player does not qualify for any positions based on the above selections, he will qualify at the position(s) played most in the previous season. If he did not play at all last season, then the default position(s) will be used.

From a hitting perspective, I think it's easy enough to simply up the minimum games played, to a number that basically makes it so that a player's primary position is the only position he really qualifies for.  The prior season's game limit could be upped to 54 (1/3 of a player's games, if he was to play 162 games), and a current season's could be the same, or very close to within that number.  40 perhaps.

I'm not sure if the pitching really needs anything done to it.  However, teams that have starters who qualify for RP definitely have an advantage, so maybe that minimum requirement should be upped also.

We will need to put in a weekly innings limit for next season.

i agree that quite possible the only changes we should make are.....games started in a week (sp) and make it to where these infielders cant be raking the OF stats. i cant extend omar infante becuase its outrageous what i have to pay him.

I like to see assists/putouts gone from the scoring system as well. Intuitively, there doesnt seem to be a strong correlation between how well a player plays defense and assists/putouts.

The agreement with the scoring system was that defense would be altered or removed if it didn't work out in 2010.  I am favoring the removal of defensive statistics due to their unaccountability and added complexity to setting lineups.

I think we might want to make an official topic for the Rules Committee to take a look at, Colb.  I'm feeling like maybe this should go to the RC so we can get some official debate on it.

We could increase the number of games required for OF eligibility to solve this problem. We can keep the rest of the positions eligibility as it is right now and take OF up to say 30games played?

I do agree with this argument however I think we should follow the path as we have in the past and give a season's notice before the rule change. I was also affected by this  with Adam Dunn, although he didn't play a whole lot in the OF he was the #2 OF when I had him. Now I thought that was kinda unfair however he was OF eligible which meant I could play him in the OF (which I did for a week or two). Now this wasn't too favorable for me, but it was a part of the game. In fact this is why I made the decision to trade Dunn, if not for his OF ranking, he would still be a Brave and this yr's playoff race could be totally different.

I don't mind the position eligibility as much as the defensive statistics.  It was also agreed upon that they would be removed in 2011 if there was debate over their effectiveness.
