Title: Minnesota/Toronto Trade
Post by: Lindner on March 16, 2012, 01:33:17 AM
MN gives:
Alex Wimmers (MiLB)
8th rounder (2012 Amateur Draft)

TOR gives:
$6M (2012)

Minnesota does this deal to get under cap for the Machado deal.  That's pretty much it.

I approve of this deal, to take cash and turn it into long term franchise depth and additional picks is fine with me,

I'm Ok with this deal, but I would like to move that following the completion of these trades we put a rule in place that prevents cash to be traded for prospects or perhaps any amount of cash greater than the value of the contracts exchanged etc.  There is way too much potential for an owner to torpedo their team over the long-haul for the sake of having cash in the short term.  In Baltimore's case, it appears that they are giving up Machado for cash despite being well under the cap and (so far) spending no money in free agency.  I don't know that that sort of thing is good for the long-term viability of the league.  Just my two cents.

I definitely know what you mean.  I don't love the rule either.  But I suppose it is legal for now.

The recent influx of cash being allowed to be traded in deals does have me a bit worried about this getting out of hand. I know matt and nick know what their doing so this is fine.
