Baltimore Gives:
Manny Machado
Minnesota Gives:
$25.5M Cash (all in 2012)
25 and a half million dollars is a lot of cash to give up for one player who hasn't even hit the Majors yet, but we really believe in this kid. If he can stay at short, he has the potential to be an all-star. Unfortunately, potential can be a dangerous thing and is very uncertain..
$25M will be a lot of money for Baltimore to play around with and I'm sure they will put it to good use.

I know that Baltimore has not yet responded, but I remember our constitution requiring that the money exchanged in a trade could not be any larger than the contracts associated with the players in the trade. That might not make this kind of trade possible as I'm reading it.
-
I'd never noticed that rule. That would certainly kill the process now wouldn't it.
-
Ahh. Here is the clause. I'll have to talk to Greg about this.
Cash for the current season may be traded. If the trade is during the off-season, then cash may be traded for the upcoming season. Cash for future seasons may also be traded if the amount is no greater than the salaries of the players involved.
-
Before I make a comment, I should find out if it's allowed. I see a re-occurring theme.
-
the orioles accept this trade and will try to use the cash to win the championship this year rather than wait. I am excited to have made this deal and was happy negotiating with the twins who have a good gm. I look forward to future dealing with them.
-
the way the clause is written does not apply to the upcoming season, only future seasons.

Correct. Thanks for the easy negotiations. You are going to have a ton of cap room and could definitely make a run at it this year if you hurry up and sign some free agents!
-
As long as the rules are correctly interpreted, I have no issue with the trade. The valuation seems fairly appropriate given both teams' goals.
:iatp:

I approve this trade if this is acceptable within the rules, but would like an official ruling. I for one did not know cash could be traded outright. I thought it had to be attached to contracts in all situations.
-
As stated in the constitution, this is a legal trade.
-
Rule interpretation is correct, though I didn't anticipate this happening. Will consider a rule change for next year if necessary.
One issue I do have at the moment is Minnesota has $101,670,000 in 2012 salary now, so $25.5M would exceed the cap. I can't process this trade until MIN is at or below $99.5M. If there was a mistake in my calculations, please let me know.
-
So, is this trade approved pending cap clearance? I wasn't sure if we should go ahead and vote on this prior to a rules interpretation or not. Could you clarify that Kenny? If there is a question about a rule, should we vote first and let you clear up the rule or wait for your interpretation?
-
I'm assuming the other trade is the one they want voted on and not this one.
