Title: oRIOLES/ MARLINS TRADE
Post by: gnyers1 on February 28, 2012, 12:41:23 PM
The Miami Marlins have agreed to trade:
J.J. Putz P $4.5M 2012, FA 2013
Jose Tabata OF $440,000 2012, 3rd yr 2013, arb 2014, arb 2015, arb 2016
Carlos Zambrano P $18M 2012, FA 2013
Rob Rasmussen P (A) marlins #9 prospect according to mlb.com
cash $18.5M for 2012

For the following players from the Baltimore Orioles:

Jim Johnson P $975,000 2012, arb 2013, arb 2014
Zach Britton P $440,000 2012, 3rd yr 2013, arb 2014, arb 2015, arb 2016
Luke Scott OF $6.4M 2012, FA 2013
Kyle Hudson OF (AAA)
Danny Hultzen P (A)

The Orioles GM has accepted this offer.  The following are the reasons:
The main reason is our interest in pitcher Zambrano who looks like he got in shape over the off-season and should be an above average starter.  The second reason is that Luke Scott had only 9 homers last year, and for 4.5 million dollars, we wanted to have more production.

The Marlins agree with this trade. Putz and Zambrano only have this upcoming season left on their contracts.  Johnson and Britton are locked up for 3 and 5 years. With saves and holds accounting for more or less the same Johnson provides close to what Putz would put up.  Britton should make up for what I am losing in Putz and provide the same depth as Zambrano. Scott will fill the void left by tabata in left and possible utility position for one year while V-Mart is out with his ACL.  The Marlins also aquire Hudson which is a AAAA prospect right now and in addition to that picking up Hultzen who should quickly move up in the Mariners organization.  Rasmussen is a quality prospect but looks to only have a 4-5 position as a starter.  The Marlins are also sending $18.5M to the Orioles which pays a little more than for big z

Hultzen is the best play in this trade.  A very even trade, nonetheless.  Tabata is a very underrated player.

I have to agree with Lindner here, Hultzen will probably be the best piece of this pie, followed by Tabata & possibly Britten if he turns it around.
