While acquiring Cliff Lee, Andre Ethier and Pedro Martinez were key moves for the Brewers run at a title last season, a lesser noticed but possibly more important accomplishment was the stockpiling top-notch prospects at little cost. Today, 5 of those prospects were moved for the league's best player, Albert Pujols. The move carries a substantial risk for the Brewers as the are heavily investing in a single player, but Pujols is the best of his generation and certainly warrants the risk.
Albert's current contract has only one year remaining; however, sources are saying the Brewers have already started discussions with his agent regarding an extension that would keep him a Brewer for the foreseeable future. The two sides expect to reach an agreement before the conclusion of the 2010 season.

Trade confirmed. The Cardinals need to build an at present non-existent farm system. We are sacrificing this season in order to be competitive in the future. Other veterans are available.

Good job to you both. That's how Championships are won. Oh, and teams built. I wonder if I could get the same haul for Vazquez, lol.

Well done, gentlemen. :koolaid:

This is by far the biggest move made so far in this league. I can see the Cardinals side of this as they could pick up a replacement CI that produces 60% of the level of Pujols at 1/3 the price and then they pick up Gamel and Santana to replace part of their infield in the coming years. Time will tell....
