Title: Rays/Rockies Trade
Post by: hootfish on February 08, 2012, 12:23:08 AM
The Colorado Rockies have agree to a trade....the details are as follows.

Colorado Sends SS Troy Tulowitzki 8.25M/10M/16M/20M/20M/20M/20M/20M/14M/15M(club option 4M B/O)

The Rays send SP Jeremy Hellickson  pre arby
                       3B Danny Valencia 480K
P   Andy Oliver  top 5 prospect Tigers

This trade fits in perfectly with my organizations strategy. After considering the holes in my team and the cost in free agency I felt like my team was in "baseball hell" Not bad enough to compete for the top draft picks and not nearly good enough to win it all. Also most of my pitching staff was on the final year of their contracts.....So I decided to sign one of the games best bats over the next 5 years and build around him. (Albert Pujols) The major portion of the dismantling is complete. I now have what is an extremely inexpensive starting staff that is mostly locked up for years. This trade gives me the staff ace. Danny Valencia fills a hole in the lineup and is cheap to boot. The deal also continued my plan and add another good prospect to the mix in P Andy Oliver.......meanwhile the Rays continue to add to their quest for a championship this season.

This one hurt, I'm not going to lie.  I love Hellickson, and in order to give up the reigning rookie of the year and his team-friendly contract, I needed a star.  Fortunately, I got one in this deal.  Tulowitski will add a power bat to my lineup this season as I push to contend for a championship.  I hate to lose Hellickson, but my pitching is still deep enough to sustain the loss.  Likewise, I will be forced to address my need at the CI slot after losing Valencia.  Finally, losing Oliver is a real tough blow.  He had become one of my favorite prospects since I picked him up from Detroit in the Hanley Ramirez deal.

However, as I mentioned, Tulo fits well into my plans for this year (even though in a few seasons I will likely not be able to keep both he and Cabrera).  The Rays are in it to win it this season, and sometimes you have to take chances on deals like these to progress to that next level.

Thanks to the Rockies for their straight-forward, and yet very frustrating, negotiations.  Haha

I know that this was not originally posted under Transactions so it may have been missed, but could this be included in the next round of processed transactions?
