This trade helps out the Marlins this year.  Todd has produced his entire career and even though he is getting up in years he maintains a high batting average and just continues to will himself on base.  He will provide another strong presence in the club house.  His salary is very manageable and will help us as we enter the Free Agent marget to concentrate on other areas.
We are giving up in return a project at 1st in Kila, he has proven himself in the minors but has of yet to be able to translate that into the majors.  His contract was very inexpensive and also is locked up a several years so this was another consideration in the move.

That was fast.

The Rockies were looking to free up the 1b position to pursue a more traditional power bat at first base. I wanted to get a prospect in return that was cheap and under team control for a while. I think Kila will get a fair shot for his new team and has a chance to develop this season.

I don't think Kila is really worth a crap, but you clear up cap and Helton is ancient.

And extra props to the Rockies for making a trade within a few hours of getting your team.  You're making me look like a slacker.

Barring injuries I think Hilton is very capable of repeating this 2011 numbers which for 4+mm isn't horrible production out of the firsthand slot. I to don't believe Kali will ammount to anything at the ML level, but since it appears the Rockies sole intentions were to clear cap & roster space, I will vote to approve this deal.

Ps. Good luck acquiring that prodotypical 1B via freeagency, with the median capspace at roughly 55-65mm per squad, I'm thinking those guys are going to get organizational crippling contracts. But I'm a pessimist, so I would think that.

:iatp: Looks like a fair trade to me.

My thoughts too...

You make some good points. I will correct you on one thing however. Whether I am right or wrong will be certainly debate-worthy....the truth is it was not just a salary dump. I actually do believe Kila will be a viable player and the expected price for a power bat would be one of the reasons I made the deal. Someone is going to pay top dollar and you need to have the room to be able to go for it. If it doesn't work out I am confident not having Helton will not be the primary reason I do not do well. Wow. This is going to be a very fun league. Good Luck to you all.
