Title: Marlins / Tigers Trade
Post by: johnbosma on January 15, 2012, 11:40:41 PM
Tigers send C/DH Victor Martinez 2012: $13m; 2013: $13m; 2014: $12m
and the Tigers will pay half of VMart's 2012 salary ($6.5m)

Marlins send SP Chris Volstad 2012: $445k; 2013: arb; 2014: arb
and SP prospect Chad James (High A Jupiter)

Rationale coming in a minute.

(Edited on 1-17-2012 to include Detroit paying half of Martinez's 2012 salary in light of VMart wrecking his knee two days after this trade was agreed upon.)

Thanks to snbts for working with me on this deal.

Rationale: V-Mart is obviously a productive player and will be very useful for the Marlins. The Tigers are looking to free up some salary for the next several seasons and get younger. Volstad will fill the 4th SP spot for the Tigers for this and several seasons at a very affordable price. His xFIP has me optimistic, as does his durability so far. I'm hoping that Wrigley field doesn't cause him to give up even more homers, though. Chad James has shown a great deal of promise and will hopefully be a major leaguer in 2013.

Marlins get better for this year and possibly beyond, while the Tigers get younger and free up some salary for free agency.

The Marlins agree to this trade.  We love having the opportunity for V-mart to take over behind the plate.  This shores up a very big need for the team.  The payroll had some flexibility to take on his salary.  Volstad was going to be the #4/5 starter.  Chad James is the #3 prospect in the Marlins organization and has a promising future ahead of him.

tough luck on VMart. I have him in another league and it has been hell for me. Ruined my entire offseason plans.
