Title: Chicago Cubs Release
Post by: chicubs33 on December 31, 2011, 02:38:10 PM
I apologize first off if I'm making a illegal move here but...

Kosuke Fukudome (14.5M) is given his unconditional release.

What would it cost to claim him?

If the time has not passed you can drop him with no charge to your Salary cap.  If that time has expired then you would be hit for the $14.5M.  This would be due to his salary not being highlighted in yellow.  Kenny set a deadline for when the latest you could drop someone without penalty but I do not know when that is/was.

As far as making a claim on him, you would pay the full amount
Unconditional Release Waivers
If a player is placed on Unconditional Release Waivers, any other organization may choose to
claim him. If claimed, the new team will inherit the player’s contract in its entirety. If no team
claims him, he will become a free agent and the remainder of the contract will be paid in full by
the waiving organization. Other organizations have 48 hours to make a claim.

I need a chance to review this to make sure the contract isn't a mistake. We'll make the deadline to claim (if Jon still wishes to waive him) 48 hours after I post a clarification. Will probably happen tomorrow afternoon.

Whether or not he will count against your cap is going to depend on when the "drop date" was set.  I guess you'll have to wait and see what Kenny says.

Although he has less than 6 years service time, he does have a guaranteed contract through 2012.

Jon, if you wish to release him, you can, but will still have to pay his salary for 2012. Please let us know how you want to proceed.
