Title: Max Contracts and Limits Discussion
Post by: Anthony on September 03, 2020, 08:55:30 PM
Given that we have a whole offseason ahead of us, I wanted to go ahead and talk about some other issues that were brought up in the contraction discussion. The max contract of 10m seems to be obsolete and unnecessary. Regardless of what happens with contraction, I think this needs to be addressed. In the past it's just been whoever is first to bid wins the player (ex. http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?topic=364425.0). However by getting rid of this rule, this opens the door for a team to offer a ridiculous contract for a single year then resign them at a fraction of the price the following year.

With those two things in mind, I'm proposing the following -

1. Remove the $10m max salary
2. Introduce new contract minimums for more expensive contracts
3. Revaluate the extension values to resemble a more balanced scale based on today's contracts (and then adjusted for a 20 or 18 person league)

Would love thoughts and if you agree/disagree with the changes. I don't want to propose exact values just yet before discussion.

I agree with all 3. Its not very realistic that if your player was the highest scorer in the league that you can sign him for 1 or 2 years at a max dollars because he has nowhere but down to go. and same with fa that you can over bid a guy and pay it in one year then resign for his normal contract. the more we can make it like real life the better

I agree with the 3 proposals. I think the maximum salary should not be limited (whoever is first to bid wins the player) and that the value of the contract should be attached to a definite number of years. I consider number 3 as an update to reflect today's contracts in the NHL.

I'm good with all. Except I would say create a new max of around $15m

how about no max but if somebody goes over 15m then we kick them out of the league. It would clearly show somebody is not capable of being a GM

I agree with three-good ideas!
