Title: Offseason Poll #6 - Contract Buyouts
Post by: Vik on November 25, 2019, 06:39:30 PM
Currently a player may be released at any time but to do so you are on the books for full contract each remaining year.

There are various buyout rules through other leagues and I am happy to discuss options but as with other polls keeping it more vague for now to see if there is support.

Perhaps contract buyouts specifically for players who officially retire.

I don’t have any issue with discount, as long as it’s not huge for a retired player, but it shouldn’t be big.

I vote for the buyout, but it doesn't even have to have a contract discount.  The contract can remain fully guaranteed, but accelerated and paid as a lump sump to clear future cap and roster spot.

Bobby Bonilla $5.0M(2023)

Buyout in 2019 for $25M (5 years x $5M/yr).  No discount, just accelerated contract paid in full.

I like brents idea seems to work really well.

Another close one with 7-5 in favor of buyouts.

Becuase there was not enough disscusion and some do prefer no discount or buyout at all, will make the change to variation of Brent's idea which gained support.

Contract may be bought out at full guaranteed value, but can be paind in lump sum in 1 year or spread out at GM's discretion among remaing years.

Using the mention example of Bobby Bonilla $5.0M(2023)

Total buyout is $25M (5 years x $5M/yr).  GM may pay full 25m in any single season, or any sort of combination among years remaining.

Something random like 0.3m cap hit 2020, 2.7 cap hit 2021 and remaining 22m in 2023 season would be valid.

Keep in mind, a player on expiring deal is simply going open roster spot but have full cap hit count in the given season.

For anyone who doesn't see this will mention all polls are resolved in next PM with emphasis on this one and additional extension. We should hopefully all be on same page once draft starts.
