Title: Buffalo / Edmonton
Post by: jlapo11 on August 01, 2019, 11:18:28 PM
:BUF-NHL: trades

G Curtis McElhinney, $2.5m (2020-2021)

for

:EDM:

D Dante Fabbro, $0.5m (P-n/a)
C Ty Dellandrea, $m (P-n/a)

I tried to acquire Adam Fox but :VAN: beat me.  fabbro was my second choice

I am trading a goalie who might not see too many games with Vasileski in front of him to acquire 2 1st round prospects with great future.  I might lost some PPG this year but I have 3 goalie prospects who should be on my NHL roster very soon (Shesterkin and Luukkonen). These two acquisitions will replace draft picks traded previously and will certainly be better that the Suppl Draft 2nd round picks.

Thanks :EDM: for the deal. I would prefer to have Fox but Fabbro and Dellandrea will do the job. Pls confirms

Edmonton accepts.  We gain another solid backup goalie. And clear up another roster spot.  While we are trading away a lot of prospects we still have some exciting young talent on the way and are in a position to acquire some great players in free agency.  Thanks for the trade.

I don't like for this trade for Edmonton at all. A 36 year-old back-up for Fabbro alone would be lop-sided in Buffalo's favour. Fabbro isn't just a 1st round prospect, he's ready for prime time now. Throw in 13th over-all Ty Dellandrea and this deal seems tilted to me.

I'm very much with Slack on this one. Sure Mac is going to Tampa, but it's Vasi's net, so short of him getting injured, there isn't much production there.

I think Curt may be undervaluing Fabbro here too (by a lot), as he will be stepping into PK Subban's top-4 role in Nashville. Ty on top of it is just very much a bad move IMO.

I think packaging Fabbro with Dellandrea and some other pieces could net a legit starting goalie from someone. Not a 36 year old journeyman backup.

(And there is no way I'd trade Fox for McElhinney, let alone Fox plus other pieces, same as I wouldn't trade Fabbro for Mac.)

I'm with these guys.  Seems to me these 2 prospects could pull in a hell of a lot more.

I'm inclined to veto.  Curt - convince me!

My idea with this move was to create some space to make some bigger FA signings and solidify some starts at goalie. Sure Mcelhinney is older but he has been a decent goalie for a while and should be in a good position as a vet backup in tampa.  There aren't many goalie starts available in FA.  I'll admit that valuing prospects isn't my strength, but my play is more for this season. ( I understand the questions about dealing Fabbro), but it may be a few years before dellandrea gets solid ice time.  I think I was able to get what I wanted from the deal, I might not have maxed the return I could have gotten, but for what was offered tome I think I got something that fits with the moves I'm trying to make now.

I understand the need for goalie starts, but two above average prospects for 25 starts tops is no where near close to me.

I am out of town with limited/ no  easy access to Internet.  Stop the discussion until I can defend  this trade  and IF NECESSARY revisit  it to  make TC  members happy  even tough the two  parties involved with it were happy and approved this deal. Both add good reasons To do it.

Still a veto for me.

If EDM's sole reason is to make roster space for FA, some easy moves would be to buy-out the following players who are overpaid and expiring, so it would both clear roster space and save cap as all are expiring deals:

D Johnny Boychuk, $3.8m (2019-2020)
D Danny Dekeyser, $2m (2019-2020)
G Mike Condon, $4.2m (2019-2020)

While Dellandrea may not be in the NHL this year, that's what our minors roster spots are for. With no draft picks, he can stay on the minors roster no problem, very easy to let him marinate down there.

Overall this trade doesn't even clear a roster spot as McIlhenny would take Fabbro's NHL Roster spot. And add cap space.

The value isn't close, and the reasoning doesn't make sense on top of that. As mentioned previously, packaging Fabbro and Dellandrea along with maybe another piece or two, could land a starting goalie, not a back-up who will be out of the league soon.
