Veto.

I don't veto trades lightly (this might be the first time) but, to me, this trade is puzzling and damaging to Pittsburgh.

Vancouver confirms the trade.

I realize it looks like a lot coming back on paper. This was the reasoning the trade ended up happening like it is:

PIT wants to clear cap space for FA, and this swap clears up $3.8m in cap for PIT.

Bozak was actually the better fantasy player last year too:
Shaw: 143.5 fantasy points  (2.11 per game)
Bozak: 189.5 fantasy points  (2.43 per game)

Realistically neither of these 2 players will be re-signed in the off-season, given the high re-sign values for Centres in our league.
So PIT wanted to give the future picks to get cap space right now to sign a longer-term FA for his roster.

Overall, in exchange for the $3.8m in cap and the slightly better production, VAN gets some late round draft picks in the future. The 2nd will (hopefully) be a very late 2nd rounder, and the 3rd's are 3rd's

Also, we all value draft picks differently.
Some of us value 3rd rounders because like to dig up the older prospects in hopes that their NCAA college success turns into NHL playing time.
I know others hate draft picks all-together outside of top-10 selections, and then others just auto-draft the current year's rookies.

Either way - I'll let the TC decide what happens.
This is just the deal that was drawn up that was acceptable to PIT in order to clear some more cap space before FA starts.

I just had this discussion with Anthony on the perceived value of 3rd rounders, and for the record I don't think there is any room for doubt as to their value and importance to all franchises. Whether in a re-build or not, any competitive GM (which we should all be, or at least inspiring others to be) should be building their team for the future.

St. Louis makes an excellent case in point. A dominant and winning team in the present that just completed this years draft with a final selection of Kristian Vesalainen, the 1st round 24th over-all pick! Remember this the next time someone tries to tell you that 3rd is just a 3rd.

VETO

I'm also going to Veto, mainly for the reasons stated earlier.

Brian is new to the league, so its understandable that he wants to form his team to his vision but I think this is a largely unequal trade. Pitt is in major need of a rebuild and is just giving away too many assets. Too many teams have a lot of cap space, and the addition of 3.8m isn't likely to make as big a difference as those potential picks.

Even if Pitt doesn't want build through the draft, he doesn't have to. But he probably saw that there were at least 6 teams trying to get more picks all of the way until the end of the draft. I had like 10 players left on my board at the end. These picks have value and Pitt can get a lot more in return for them. Either now, or next summer.

Respect the TC decision. That's what we're here for

Also to Slack's point - this year was really weird for draftees. Even with all of the keeper draftees we take, there were still 1st round players remaining to be had for some reason.
People were taking 2nd rounders over the 1st rounders, and taking NCAA college and some AHL guys, along with Swedish and Finnish league players.

I don't think I've ever seen 1st round draftees from the same year left at the end of our 60-pick rookie draft! Especially when there's only maybe 15 or so of them left after our keepers!

Agree to a point. That being that I think this years draft was incredibly competitive, and speaks well of the exceptional knowledge base here at DNHL.

I see that this trade has been re-jigged, so just using the thread for convo.

For interests sake, I paid $5.4m (Mikko Koivu) for the 3rd round pick in the Suter deal. Monster deal for me, not saying it wasn't, but $5.4m for what is likely the last pick in next years draft is setting kind of a low bar for the value of cap space.

Makes sense to me while it's still open.

Maybe it's just me, but for some reason I don't see someone paying Sam Gange $6m per year in FA for 4 or 5 years in length. Then again I could be wrong...

And also Bozak could be flipped again for more picks/prospects down the road since he's on a minimum contract taking up next to no cap space for  a team.

For interests sake, I paid $5.4m (Mikko Koivu) for the 3rd round pick in the Suter deal. Monster deal for me, not saying it wasn't, but $5.4m for what is likely the last pick in next years draft is setting kind of a low bar for the value of cap space.

You also got a 2nd round pick in the Koivu deal.
Which, I get your point for this trade thread, which is why the 2nd rounder was taken out along with another 3rd rounder.

Also for comparison sake from past trades - paying $6.9m for a player, giving cap savings for a team got a 1st and 2nd round pick in return. (Chara trade, who's ranked 34th overall).
It only cost a couple of fringe players and 3rd rounder to get the 13th ranked D in the other trade (Suter trade).
Maybe it's just me, but the way we're all talking up draft picks, a 1st and a 2nd round pick for Morrow, Jaskin and a 3rd might even get vetoed now as well.

Either way, it's all good. I see where everyone is coming from.
It's the deal that was agreed upon so it was posted.
Now with the revision, PIT keeps some extra picks for future trade negotiations with other teams.

To clarify, I got the 2nd for an additional $5.4m. So, I paid $10.8m for 2 very late picks (the last 2nd and 3rd for NEXT year!).

Hey now.... We're not just handing the 2017-18 league title to Shooter, haha.
Guy's gotta earn those back to back 'ships!

I don't think I'm the only one interested in dethroning the Blues to get that ugly pic of Tarasenko off our homepage haha. I can't even minimize it anymore since the site is all out of whack lately.

Haha... Seems to me like he's the only guy who is trying. Go Blues!
