Title: Giants - Cubs Trade 6/29/17 4:22 pm ET
Post by: jpmanchester on June 29, 2017, 05:00:00 PM
Giants trade:
CI-MI Solarte, Yangervis, $4m (2019)
CI-MI-OF Taylor, Chris, $0.5m (2018)
SP Richard, Clayton, $0.5m (2018)
CI-OF Osuna, Jose, $0.5m (P-n/a)

Cubs trade:
SP Colon, Bartolo, $2m (2017)
CI Belt, Brandon, $4m (2018)

Cubs accept. I was planning on Belt being a long term CI option, but Cubs roster has been decimated this season with injuries, demotions, and no cap space. So this deal will help to fill in some holes to try and make another run into the playoffs. And we'll work on long term solutions with all of next years cap space. Thanks for the easy deal Flash. Giants to confirm.

One note, this trade can not be officially processed until 7/10 when Taylor is eligible for trade.

Giants initiated this trade to get a bonafide CI in Brandon Belt.  Solarte will lose his CI eligibility at the end of the season, unless he starts playing 3B more, but he seems to be locked in as the Padres 2B.  With the Giants no longer being anything more than a Wild Card team, it's time to look to the future.  It's hard to give up Chris Taylor, but the Giants are looking at the cost of extending him in the future and have decided it is not cost effective to invest in a utiility player that could lose playing time to lineup regulars. Colon for Richards is a wash, although Richards has had some great starts this year.

All of us build our teams in different ways, and the Giants see the addition of Brandon Belt as a key to sustained success in the future--with the belief that there will be other players like Chris Taylor will emerge in the future.  As always, our hopes can be dashed in a moment, but hope is what draws us to fantasy play.

The trade can be approved, but as noted, cannot be processed until July 10th, which is the end of the 60 day moritorium tied to his free agent signing.
