Title: Mountain West
Post by: Rob on March 02, 2017, 10:05:18 AM
It's very clear this division is stacked and not entirely fair to those teams overall.  Although with 10 teams making the playoffs, maybe it's not a make or break balance issue.  Personally, I like the drama... haha.  But I don't want to be tone deaf on this - if you all want to see the divisions re-balanced we can definitely work on that.  Let me know your thoughts.

I'd leave it be.  No doubt being in the Mountain West is going to be a vicious cage match for the foreseeable future, but the shrieking terror of it all is kind of fun.

Things change. My division won the first 3 championships and Florida (now Vancouver) sucked, and now look at it.

This is true.

I think the way our league is setup the best teams will make the playoffs nearly every time.  Even if every team in a division was a beast they'd still all most likely make it.  Then you are just talking about seeding for teams, which doesn't matter that match since there is no real home ice advantage.

Now if you want to change the seeding to be done by record I could get on board with that.  Top teams in each division can still get a spot in the playoffs.

That would certainly solve the problem, but at that point, why have divisions at all?

At some point I think Fantrax will add a division weighted scheduling option.  If that happens I am going to push for division weighting again.  We did this in the past, and the only reason we stopped is because it was WAY too much work.  We had to generate the schedule ourselves (thanks Shooter) and enter it all manually (it took me forever...).

I don't see any issues with the current Mountain West division. Over the course of time teams will rise and fall changing each of the divisions. We also have played a balanced schedule this year which doesn't have as much of an impact. I think the teams that should make the playoffs are going to. Colorado is the 3rd ranked team in the league (based on standings and points) and while they won't win the division they still get a buy in the first round and will get to face the 4th division winner which should be the weakest division winner.
