Title: Draft Discussion
Post by: Fitzy1962 on November 08, 2014, 01:05:53 PM
Someone should be sending draft notifications to the league. There shouldn't be all these skipped picks going on in the first-round.

I have not received a single pick-notice since we began and it seems obvious that neither is anyone else and thus, all the "skipped picks".

Why isn't this happening?

Red Sox autopick Tyler Beede.

How did the Red Sox get two picks in the same round?

We don't need to send 1,200 PM's to the entire league regarding every pick.  We didn't do it last year and it worked out just fine.

The date of the draft has been posted for some time and a PM alerting the league was sent out.  If an owner can't be bothered to check the board once a week then we probably need to find a new owner for that team.

Please don't post your comments or questions in the draft thread.  Thanks.

Every other league sends out notifications after every pick. No reason why this league can't. Not everyone can live on the website. Let's play a gentleman's game.

If people are notified it's their turn and still don't pick, then so be it, but let's at least give everyone that chance. It doesn't take but a few clicks on the keyboard to do so.

I'm in several leagues that don't send out notifications after every pick so you're quite obviously wrong.

Checking this site once a week doesn't constitute living on this site but you're free to PM every owner after every pick through round forty if you like.  Just don't PM me though, I'm good.

Their probably your own leagues, but the other two you are in along with myself, both send out notifications and all 5 leagues I play indo as well.

I'm also quite sure I'm not the only one who would like to be notified when it's their turn to pick.

I'm sure everyone will be happy to leave you off the list.

Geez. Welcome back to the league. I'd like notifications for those doing so. Will get :NYM: up to speed this afternoon. Been touring England this week watching the Cowboys stomp the jags.

Chris, I never meant for you to be the one to send all the notifications. I was thinking of a "next man up" system where after each person picks, they send a PM to the next person on the list.

That shouldn't be problem for you, should it?

17) :ATL: Atlanta Braves (via :NYM:) - Justus Sheffield, P autopick

The 2.17 pick of mine was given to the Braves incorrectly.  If you check our rosters, you'll see that the ATL-NYM traded picks were 2015, not 2014.

Couldn't pass him up.  I love screwball pitchers, had a friend in high school that threw one struck out 27 in a 13 inning complete game his junior year.

Would it be too much to ask that someone at least state which round and which tean gas just drafted?

If we can't send draft notices, we need to at least identify which round, which pick it is and which team made the pick.

There is a running list on the first page of the thread that is updated at the least every other day and most of the time multiple times a day.  Rosters and Fantrax are being updated at this time as well.   Right now a round is taking about 10 days to complete.  You can also turn on notifications for the thread where you will recieve an email when a new post is made since you last viewed it.  I don't think it's too much to ask to check in once a week to be prepared to pick. I'm curious how it is a mockery.

The draft is running fine.  I think next year we should perhaps do a team check before the draft to verify whether there are empty teams.  That way we can set them to autopick right away.  There seem to have been about four or five empty teams this year when the draft began so we can do better in that regard.

That was not directed at the mods, who are doing a ton of work =as always.  It was directed at the guys who chose not to send a courtesy email when they made their pick.  1st draft ive been in in 20yrs where this courtesy was not afforded.  I agree that it is not asking much to keep in touch.  My laptop, tablet and phone are open to this page every day.  It never closes.  I got slammed at work one day and suddenly i was skipped.  I have never seen so many teams skipped in one draft.  I certainly would not be rediculous enough to ask anyone to keep track of the draft for me, but found it strange that whoever is making their pick does not emiail the next guy.
Anyway,  that was my only point.  That and the fact that i appreciated all the work in keeping up with the draft elligible list.

Thanks,

25) :COL: Colorado Rockies (via :TB:) - Cody Reed, P
**26) :PHI: Philadelphia Phillies (via :HOU2: via :TB:) - Mark Zagunis, C

**Extra third round pick traded by Tampa Bay will be deducted from 2015 draft.

Unless I misunderstood I thought the 2nd pick traded by the Rays, number 26, was for 2015 not this year.

both picks traded traded for this year's draft about six months apart, it wasn't caught until we set up this year's draft.  Instead of invalidating an older trade the Rays just lost next year's 3rd.
Title: The worst run draft on ProFSL.
Post by: Fitzy1962 on December 12, 2014, 12:25:03 AM
This league has the worst run draft on the entire website. No one gets emails telling them it's their turn and that is directly reflected by how many teams are skipped in the draft every single round.

It's a travesty and a shame, and it happens every single year in this league. It's pathetic.

Why do we allow this to continue to happen?   It's aweful. It's the worst on the entire ProFSL website by far.

I wonder why? Same people running the draft every yeart? YUP!!!!!!!!!

This is the worst run draft on the entire website.  There's minimul communication, at best, and it seems like everything is done to give the few an edge.

Instead of skipping picks, how about sending out emails telling people it's their pick?

Too lazy to do so. Every other league does this, but not this one! Oh Hell no, that's too much work!

I understand people have lives but I do agree that something next year needs to change. I can see if u miss around that's fine but its the same people missing in every round. What I suggest is if they don't  make there pick then they should be put on auto draft and giving the best available player at that time. And be told that if they want to get off auto draft they need show up for the draft. This way the draft will keep going because the way its going were be lucky if draft is done by beggining of season

It will speed up when the clock speeds up. There is no way an active owner will be placed on autopick. The overall goal of the league is to emulate MLB as closely as possible if a pick doesn't get in on time the team is skipped and can make their pick at anytime. If a team doesn't make up their pick in this league it pretty much equates to failing to sign a pick in the actual draft.

The only people that should be sending emails, in my opinion is whoever is making their own pick and doing so at the time their pick is made. That person sends one email to the next person up.  No need for mass emails and no need for the commishes/mods to have another task to do.

Just my opinion.

I agree I blame the owners who don't check in and see who is up drafting. Its not like it takes for ever to check. I didnt realise the comisioner and the other owners who are helping out have baby sit owners and tell them when its there turn. When I joined the league I thought it would be easy and fast when doing the draft but people don't care to check in. The way I see it it benefits the owners that are showing up because they are getting the top players in the draft. Think about why do u all think I acquired all the draft picks I'm going to make my minors better this year instead of  taking 2 to 3 years to do it.

May as well toss my own 2cents in on this since it seems to be a league discussion.

Yeah it would be nice to get emails/notifications when you are up but ultimately it's each owners own responsibility. If you don't have time to periodically check the league and see what rd/pick it is and have an idea about when it will be your turn then maybe it's a good idea to be in fewer leagues so as to not spread attention too thin. I'm not picking anybody out here, just my opinion.

The commishes do a lot of work in this league. I don't envy them, it's almost like a part time job.

I will say we should all do better when posting picks. Don't just say "team x picks player y" (which I'm probably guilty of at times)

"With the 17th pick of RD 3 Angels pick OF A. Player" If every team did it like that it would be easier to follow. That's my only gripe.

Bingo. Thanks for expressing more clearly what I have been struggling  to say.   I couldn't agree more with exactly what you said.
The trouble isnt checking in. Its trying to unravel the mystery of which round and or pick was just made.  Especially when skipped picks are thrown in .  I have seen a couple that didn't have a team name. Just a player name.  I uasually put pick number and round but have given u . I would gladly go back to doing that if we can all agree to at least do that much.

It looks like :TOR: traded their 10th rd pick to :COL:?  Can we confirm whether or not that is accurate, as it appears that this pick is listed to them on the draft board.  (in fact they just made their pick).

As of today, we have over half of the teams not making picks. Many have been on "auto-skip" for 10-15 rounds. Washington doesn't have a single player listed as "drafted".

Do these teams have owners? Are they just not participating? Or are they just so confused with who's turn it is and what round we are currently in that they don't make a choice?

Some teams get the benefit of being told they are "up next" while most do not get any notice they may be up next or in the next several picks.

Here's the list of teams who have been and are currently on "autoskip", taken from the official draft thread:

Los Angeles Dodgers – autoskipped (Since Rd3)
Seattle Mariners – skipped (Since Rd4)
San Diego Padres – skipped (Since Rd4)
Washington Nationals – autoskipped (Entire Draft)
Pittsburgh Pirates – skipped (Since Rd5)
Kansas City Royals – skipped (Since Rd6)
Cleveland Indians – autoskipped (Since Rd7)
Atlanta Braves  - skipped (Since Rd9)
Chicago Cubs – skipped (Since Rd11)
Oakland Athletics – skipped (Since Rd13)
Miami Marlins – skipped (Since Rd14)
St. Louis Cardinals – skipped (Since Rd14)
Toronto Blue Jays – autoskipped (Since Rd16)
Baltimore Orioles – skipped (Since Rd18)
New York Yankees – skipped (Since Rd19)
Minnesota Twins – skipped (Since Rd17).

Everyone who has played in this league for at least a season understands the only way to build a team here is through the drafting of players.

Agreed.

But I think we need to seriously consider the intentions of those owners that don't take part in drafting or FA, though.  Yeah, the draft is super confusing when people have to wait to be skipped so they know it's their turn to make a pick.  But I think both problems here are just the symptoms of the same problem (league integrity).

The question is how do you get people to care about something they never paid into?

We have 6 vacant teams currently, and some of the teams like Miami, Oakland, St Louis don't have much use for later rounds in the draft historically.

Quite frankly the draft is probably too long at 40 rounds, especially when only about 2% of players selected after the 10th round make the majors.  Shortening the draft should be looked at for next season.

I am just going to weigh in on the opposite side of this discussion.  I understand that likely very few players after the 20th round will ever make the major leagues, however, no one knows for sure.  Additionally, it is the cheapest way to try and find talent.  I took over Colorado with an empty farm system and I still have 74 openings after drafting a full slate of 40 players.  That is part of the draw to this league, right?  200 minor leaguers?  Is it hurting anyone to have some teams go a full 40 rounds?
Title: Re: Draft Discussion
Post by: chriscvc on March 27, 2015, 12:51:45 PM
There really is nothing wrong with going the full 40, last year I had a ton of places to fill and went 40. Hell my 40th round pick (Joe Mantiply) actually has a better shot (than I originally thought) at being an mlb player (even if it's only a middle reliever).
The problem here isn't the length, I'd honestly still be picking if I didn't have mostly full minors and all of the confusion, I'm not sure how to change it but the way it was run this year wasn't good and that's the problem, I don't even remember what was different last year but it seemed to run so much smoother.

The guy that has to run the 40 round draft.

You can acquire players drafted in those rounds in free agency quite cheaply.  If filling your minors is the issue.

All I did was respond to the post on the draft-board, which offered "if anyone would like to finish out their draft, feel free to do so".

And considering that every team was on "auto-skip" at that point (and over half the teams missing most of their picks in the first 30 rounds) and no one was making any picks, I compiled a list and posted it.

2% is still 200% better than zero. My question is this: Do the vacant teams get draft-picks?

In most leagues a team without a manager will be awarded the "next highest player available" to ensure a competitive league. I haven't seen that taking place here.

This happened for the first 10 rounds, the skipped picks in those rounds are because the owner quit after the start of the draft.
