I'm working out the 14/15 division weighted schedule and have a decision to make that I'd like some input on.
This year we have a 22 week schedule (last year was 20 with the Olympics). Here's the breakdown I came up with for division weighting:
20 teams, 22 week schedule, each team has 2 matchups per week (44 matchups total)
3 games vs division opponents (12 games)
That leaves 32 games to play against the rest of the league which would be 2 games vs every other team and 3 games vs 2 random (non-division) teams.
OR
If I were to change the Stanley Cup championship matchup from our typical 2-week matchup to a standard 1-week matchup, the regular season schedule would work out more nicely:
23 week schedule, 46 matchups total
4 games vs division opponents (16 games)
That leaves 30 games to play against the rest of the league which would be 2 games vs every other team.
As you can see, option 1 is a lighter division weight and allows for the 2-week Stanley Cup matchup, but the schedule is a little odd with 2 random non-division teams getting 3 matchups. Option 2 is heavier on division weight with 4 games against division opponents, and only a 1-week Stanley cup, but the schedule is nice and tidy (4 vs division, 2 vs non-division).
I'm smack dab in the middle here... really not sure which method I prefer. Help me out!

option 1... I dont want to give up the 2 week cup final.

Yea I like the 2 week matchup a lot. Especially since 10 teams make the playoffs, there's lots of room for upset and parity. The 2 week matchup in the finals at least assures the best of the 2 final teams takes the cup.
-
Also a lot of top players are rested for playoff runs in the last couple weeks, so the 2 week matchup makes sure the stats are more representative.
-
I am game to changing the schedule to allow for a simple 4 week playoff matchup between the Blues and my team to see which team wins it all.
If you aren't ready for that then I am for keeping the 2 week stanley cup matchup.

I'm with the 2-week matchup for the finals.
Anything can happen in a 1-week showdown and a 6-goal week from one player could be the different. At least in a 2-week matchup the other team would have time to recover from a crazy 1 or 2 game performance.
I also like making the Finals the 2nd to last week of the NHL season.
As you said, teams rest players (players get "general body soreness" injuries and take 2-3 games off) in the last week of regular season leading up to playoffs.
Either that, or teams bring up young players to get a couple games taste of the NHL. Calgary's lineup at the end of last year was hilarious, so many young kids while Cammalleri and co. sat in the stands.

What if we went , 8 teams make playoffs, 2 week match ups for the 3 weeks.
Not sure how that would affect regular season..

I don't think Fantrax will let me do that.
-
its not in the standard options but if you ask them , they will do it.

If we do that then there is a much smaller chance for my favorite thing to occur, and that is Boston losing to a lower seed every year. :P

I like the 4 matchups against division opponents (Yes, I know I'm crazy saying that in my division), but I think we HAVE to keep the 2 week championship!
-
BTW, the less divisional matchups, the better for me.... Gives me a chance to at least win a couple weeks this season, haha.
