Title: Yankees / Tigers Trade (10-15-2013)

The Tigers and Yankees have agreed to the following deal:

Yankees send:
1B Mark Teixeira (salary: $22.5m in 2014, $22.5m in 2015, and $22.5m in 2016)
$15m to partially cover Teixeira's salary for each of the remaining guaranteed years of his contract (2014, 2015, and 2016)

Tigers send:
1B Greg Bird (minor league contract - High-A Lakeland)
CF Shawon Dunston Jr. (minor league contract - High-A Lakeland)
P Frank Del Valle (minor league contract - AA Erie)
3rd round pick in the upcoming draft

Tigers do this deal because we are in need of a 1B after Carlos Pena's fall from grace and while I don't expect Teix to be the same after wrist surgery, I still think he will be a significant contributor for several seasons. There is risk in dealing strong prospects and a pick for him but it is mitigated by the Yankees picking up approximately 2/3 of his salary for the next three seasons and the fact that my farm system has a good amount of depth.

The Yankees approve and would like to thank John for navigating my first trade with the league.

I think this is a good deal on both sides.  I needed to be out from under some contracts and this helps accomplish this. 

Added a solid 1B spect in Bird, and a solid CF in Dunston.

De Valle is a wild card and I love adding picks.
