Note that bids on players that may fall under prospect contracts work differently.  The prospect contract has its own set of rules at a league minimum salary.  Any amount over $0.5m is considered a signing bonus, and is on a team's books even if they release the player.  Signing bonuses are guaranteed money!

So if for example a prospect is signed to a $2.0m contract, the signing team takes a $1.5m guaranteed cap hit for that year, plus the $0.5m salary for the duration of their prospect contract (including the current year, but they could potentially be cut at no cost).  Is correct?

Please let me know if I should post a question like this in a specific forum / thread.

The $2m would affect the cap.  However, you are right that the $1.5m signing bonus is guaranteed, and the $500k salary can be freed up if they were cut at any point in the season.  The prospect contracts remove the need for confusing arbitration processes for young players.

I just want to be 100% sure before I keep bidding on prospects... Even with a full 40-man roster and $0 in cap space (but not over the cap), a prospect can be signed as long as another prospect is dropped to make roster/$ room?  (aka, I can replace prospects I inherited with prospects I'd prefer if signed the bonus fits or is 0)

A team may make any transaction as long as they are not over the cap after such move.

Just a reminder for the next few weeks...

1/1/2010 is the EDR transfer deadline... no players may be transferred to the EDR from the 40-man roster after that
1/10/2010 any player not signed becomes a free agent.  It is also the deadline at which RFA tags must be assigned.  Lastly, this is the turning point of the off-season in which the cap hits from releasing players changes from 75/50/25 back to 90/60/30.

So for m players that have a (P-n/a) next to their name, that means that I need to offer them a contract?

No.  It means they fall under a prospect contract status (P-X) where X denotes the last year of the prospect contract.  n/a simply means the timer hasn't started ticking yet.

Blake Dewitt, Casey Kotchman, Randy Ruiz, Conor Jackson, Brandon Waring, Brian Dopirak, Randy Ruiz, Bobby Borchering, Ryan Wheeler... I thought it was 72 hours since bidding opened, not 72 hours from final bid...Sorry

BTW, make sure you check if you won a bid by going to the Complete board.  You will have to declare your contract so long as it wasn't a minimum bid.  Once you do that, Commissioner Wood can process the move and update your roster.

Colby,

I just learned from Dan Wood that I can put Mets prospects on my EDR list. Can I do that still......

Yes, we realized that how the rule was defined that this could be done perpetually.  The player must have never played in MLB, had been drafted by your team, and never been on roster in this league.  Use the advanced search function to check the last one.

the way the rule is written it is 72hours from the opening bid, this is not the case though is it?

The rule is written as 72 hours since the last bid.

Transactions
  • All transactions must be posted in this sub-forum.
  • Commissioner makes all moves at the league site.
  • Free agency is handled by bidding.  If you start the bidding on a player, please create a thread with their name as the subject.  Each player is auctioned in a separate thread (at this board) that may be started by anyone.

Free Agency Bidding (Market Open until 9/12/2010)
  • You do not need to post how many years you are offering the contract until you win the bid.
  • Salaries must be valued in multiples of $500k.
  • Bids on a player are considered final when it has been open for 72 hours.
  • The winning bid will be the highest total contract amount.  Note that term limits apply after a bid is won.
  • Once you have won the bid on a player, you then must open a spot on your roster for the player.  If your roster is at the maximum number of players, then you must declare who you wish to release.  After this, you must set the contract terms.  Once this is done, the commissioner will edit your roster.
  • There is no limit to the number of players that can be auctioned at one time or the number of bids for a player.
  • If the free agent is restricted (rights are held by another team), then that team may match the final offer and sign the player to the new contract.
  • Final bids are set in stone.  If a team wishes not to take the player, then it will be considered that they gave the player a non-prospect contract for one year, and then subsequently released the player causing a hit to the team's cap.
  • Note that bids on players that may fall under prospect contracts work differently.  The prospect contract has its own set of rules at a league minimum salary.  Any amount over $0.5m may be considered a signing bonus, and is on a team's books even if they release the player.  Signing bonuses are guaranteed money!

This would read as if it were 72 hours from when the bid is opened.  No where does it mention 72 hours from the last bid.  We should change the lingo to avoid confusion.

Good point, open has always implied the time since the last bid...

Guys,

On behalf of Colby, I would like to clarify that the NEW rule for minimum years on contract extensions posted in the League Rules under 'Contracts' does not take effect until AFTER the 7/31 trade deadline.  The old rules would apply PRIOR to that date.  For example, you could extend players with contracts expiring in 2010 (i.e. Roy Halladay) to 1 years deals for the values specified under 'Contracts' in the League Rules if you do so PRIOR to the 7/31 trade deadline.

Trade Deadline is at 7/31/2010 11:59 PM EST.  Both sides must post that they agree to the deal in order for it to pass under the deadline.  No trades may be made, nor announced, after this point.

Trade market is now closed until the close of the books on the 2010 season (end of entry draft).
