Title: Contracts on retiring resigned players
Post by: Dan Wood on October 13, 2010, 11:06:23 AM
I know we have discussed this before, but I think with the adoption of the contract minimum it should be something that is brought up again. Since we have to sign a player for X amount of years, if we want to re-sign them, I think it is only fair that if the player retires during the contract, that it be voided. Free Agency is another story, since it is open market, you do what you have to in order to win a player, so you deal with the consequences. Paul Konerko for example just had a monster season, and would have to be re-signed at the maximum 5 years (or 4 - didn't check) but I doubt he plays the next four years, leaving the Phils (just using the team he is on - I doubt know Papps plan with Konerko) with a butt load of money that is now tied up. I think this rule hinders the competitive process. Just my thoughts. Like I always say, we are reactive to what happens in real MLB, I just think a little insurance is for the best.

But in case your talking about is good reason we have rfa tags when you get or trade for player you know the age and have to account for it in value As making them long or short term. I think only time to allow free drops for retired players would been if stuck with guy from beginning but now all choice.
