Extension Values for FGM RPs based on Fair Market Value
« on: August 09, 2015, 05:03:09 AM »
League Members:

I have been trying to come up with a way to update our Contract Extension Tables.  I have been in FGM since 2010 and I can't remember them ever being updated.  As I've posted before, I've been looking at what other leagues are doing and trying to see what works.  I recently posted a RP scale I saw been used by Moneyball, another ProFSL league.  I didn't really see much in terms of discussion, so I interpreted that as a mandate to keep looking.

I recently discussed the issue with Corey, a veteran member of FGM who is a founder of many ProFSL leagues.  He suggested using a league based approach in which I use the FGM Excel Sheet and remove all the cash exchanges, all the bonuses, and all the released player fees.  In addition, i  excluded all players on (P-n/a) and (P-2---) contracts.  Then I sorted through the current contracts in FGM and those become the extension values for the league.  This will allow the league's extension tables to be updated every year because it is totally based on the supply and demand within the league.

I spent some time sorting through the FGM player contracts as Corey suggested and came up with what I believe is a scale based on the fair market value of players within our league.  I will post each of the tables in a different thread to let you all get a chance to see them.  In each case, I will post the Current Extension Values on the left and the Proposed Extension Values on the right.  I have used the 2015 contracts for the RPs on your teams (listing the team who currently has the player under contract.)

Please review the scales listed further down in this thread that take into account some of the input that has been registered.

This looks like it will bring our offenses back to the pack a bit compared to pitchers. Not necessarily a bad thing just saying it would almost have to be implemented over time. I also wonder about the effects on FA Compensation since people will be able to hold on to pitching longer; maybe an adjustment needs to be made there also?
I agree that something has to be done about pitching. I'm not so sure about position players.

I def like the lower values, but I agree with Rick. Thats a huge drop at the top, maybe we doing it lower over a couple of years. Just a thought.

I would thinkthe drop at the top is too steep, though it is obvious that the previous values were a bit over the top.  Maybe do more of a 9 8.5 8 7.5 7 6 and then follow the proposed structure?

I agree with you, the drop off is quite substantial.  In reviewing it, I realized that a problem we have had in the past with RP extensions, is the effect of players who are SP/RP.  I believe that the scale below deals with the concern about the big drop off at the top of the scale and also takes into account the effect of the SP/RP players.

I reviewed the current point rankings of RPs on Fantrax.  I found there were ten players ranked above Aroldis Chapman, the player who was listed as the top RP contract in FGM.  As I mentioned before, when I first put together the scale of contract extensions, I left out any players who were on (P-n/a) contracts.  However, when I looked at the current Fantrax RP ranking, I went by points scored and placed those players in slots #1 - #10.  Nine of those players were the SP/RPs that would have a negative effect on our extension scale.

Currently, for a position player, if that player is eligible at multiple positions, we have to extend his contract based on the highest position ranking.  The same should hold true for SP/RP players.  In order to understand the process, I am going to also list the top 30 rankings of a new proposal for SP salaries, so you can see that the impact of the SP/RP player is not as significant as in the past.  Please note this, SP/RP Carlos Carrasco would be ranked #1 ($12.0m) as a RP but only #16 ($9.5m) as a SP.  If he was going to be extended, he would have to given a $12.0m contract as a RP because it is higher.  SP/RP Carlos Martinez would be ranked #2 ($10.5m) as a RP but only #26 ($7.0m) as a SP.  He would have to sign for $10.5m as a RP.

This, is of course, up for discussion, so if you have questions or suggestions please add a reply.
