Title: DISCUSSION: FNHL Season pauses, maybe cancelled- What can we do?
Post by: PigsRule on March 12, 2020, 02:55:29 PM
This is an open discussion thread to talk about the impact of the NHL season currently put on hold.

To get the discussion going, here are some possible outcomes given possible NHL decisions re 2019-20 NHL season:

1) NHL pauses regular season and resumes regular play per existing matches —- RECOMMENDATION: FNHL to resume FNHL playoffs with updated calendar dates.

2) If the NHL decides to cancel the remainder of the season... RECOMMENDATION: FNHL will keep FNHL regular season results, cancel FNHL playoffs & carry over 2019-20 prize pool to 2020-21 FNHL; FNHL draft contingent on NHL holding a draft with weighted lottery to determine draft position for the 8 remaining playoff teams.

3) If NHL decides to eliminate the remainder of its regular season and begin NHL playoffs when play resumes, FNHL playoffs will be cancelled and prize pool carried over to 2020-21 season.

The points above are for discussion and not firm decisions.
Please feel free to post your thoughts.

Sounds like the NHL expects to resume play in a few weeks once infection rates slow or plateau. I'm hoping it picks up right where it left off so we can crown a FNHL Champion for 2019-20. :Commish: :Gold::win:

It's a good plan guys. :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I'm just sad to see hockey grind to a halt but it's understandable and expected.

That is a fair plan.

There is also the possibility the NHL resumes play with a revised schedule but the same number of games over the course of what should be 3.5 weeks. First, we should ensure the remaining 1/2 week is balanced in a similar manner to what should have been the balance of this current week. Also, it will be important to determine if Fantrax can similarly account for and capture the future revised schedule and merge the new dates into the current Franchise NHL playoff set-up.

It really is a wait and see approach given how new this process is for all of us.

I'm good with the plan PR posted. We'll play it by ear. The pause can last several weeks or several months.
If you dig back to the 2003 SARS outbreak in Toronto, that lasted 6-12mths. I won't hold my breath but still remain somewhat hopeful the virus will be contained with the initiatives undertaken over the past couple of days.

If the season is canceled with the remaining teams we could do best of 3 odds or evens or pick a number from 1-10 closest wins (again 2 out of 3)

I see them back on the ice in 2 weeks

I think the options presented by PPG and Pigsrule are good and address the situations well.
Also, I'm in agreement with Blkhwkfn regarding draft order for the remaining teams. Perhaps a evenly weighted lottery for the remaining 8 teams since they could've ended up in any order. All that only if the season is cancelled and there is no ability to hold an FNHL playoffs.

Perhaps a far laying suggestion to complete the FNHL playoffs for results but no money is to sim the games on a console like PS4 or XBox. I was in a fantasy league that used the commissioner's PS4 to sim the games. We all agreed to do so and treated the season like the NFL with games played on Saturdays, then owners would plan lineups and player moves during the rest of the week leading up to Saturday.

Just an idea I'm throwing out there. Needs to be fleshed out of course if there's interest.

I heard about this idea before from other owners.

From an administration standpoint, there is no sure fire way to ensure objectivity other than the reputation of the person setting lines and running the simulation.

Then the level of manual entry to load the right players onto the right teams is labor intensive.

However, making it a results-only-without-payout endeavour could ensure the integrity of the results.

Again, it seems labor intensive but if someone wants to take on that task, it could be fun and interesting.

I could run a simulation this weekend or next week sometime and get back to you with how easy or difficult it is to run the sim for 4 matchups involving 8 teams. I could do 1 matchup then multiple the time involved in setup times 4 to determine an estimate of overall work effort to sim Round 2 of the FNHL playoffs.

I don’t see the NHL resuming in 2 weeks. I think the earliest is mid-May to give this COVID-19 virus a good 2 mths settle and get under control... that would also be enough time to reconfig schedule and secure venue availability. It’s going to be a real scheduling headache for everyone in real life.
Title: Re: DISCUSSION: FNHL Season pauses, maybe cancelled- What can we do?

I think even if the NHL resumes operation in mid-May, there will probably be some form of training camp to get players game-ready.

That would mean early June to resume play. 3 weeks remained in the regular season puts NHL regular season ending in the last week of June.

Then add 2 months of playoffs and the 2019-20 NHL crowns a champ in mid-late August. That's do-able!

We have a shot at saving the season.

:iatp::iatp::iatp: Good plan boys! I like it.

I agree with others who say the NHL will likely start up again in May sometime.
You have to imagine the NHL as a major entertainment business entity wants to recoup $$ after this pause and avoid losing millions in revenue.

In the spirit of fun, perhaps I can see whether I can get access to a gaming console and sim a matchup. Kind of a prediction for the actual matchup. I would play NHL04 on a PC way back in the day. Great fun. I don't think it was easy to select specific players because you could only get specific players via draft or in trades. To do that for 2 teams might take just a little patience.

There's chatter that the NHL could let all teams end the "regular season" with 71 games played and start the Playoffs immediately.

If that scenario plays out, our FNHL playoffs would not work.

Perhaps a suggestion would be to repurpose the remainder of the 2019-20 FNHL playoffs and plug it into the start of the 2020-21 NHL season's schedule. Just a suggestion.

The NHL and NHLPA are not at odds so for sure they will make damn sure the season continues in a few weeks or a few months even if it mean a delay to the start of the 2020-21 season.

It's all about $$$ and both the NHL and NHLPA want to make up for lost $$$ due to the current PAUSE. Count on it.

I see things the same way. No labor tension. The pause is a result of a pandemic that's out of their control and the NHL is simply doing the right thing to contribute to process of slowing down the spread. But when they get a chance, the owners and players will be chomping at the bit to get started.

Looks like we're trending toward a longer pause than weeks.
"Months" is what schools and local government are people are talking about in different circles.

Although a restart in July seems like a workable scenario still.

Talk of a possible 31 team playoff format with no regular season makes sense.

That would nudge us toward Option 1 with the FNHL playoffs setup in parallel with the 2020-21 season regular. We’ll see what happens.

I'd like to see that 31-team free for all royal rumble playoff format. However Bettman has stated he'd like to see the regular season playout because there are only a handful of games left and several teams are on the cusp of a playoff spot.

I can only imagine that a number of NHL cities will be locked down until mid-late Summer. Even if that's not the case, there are still border closures in effect like the one between the US and Canada. Kind of a small barrier to playing games in the immediate future.

I'm missing hockey in a bad way right now. I'm getting the shakes and cold sweats. It's definitely not COVID-19 either. haha

I've watched some old games getting rebroadcast but it's not the same. And are those games from only 15 years back slow or what? Wow! Crazy how fast the game is today.

I'm starting to think the NHL might resume in late Summer and play games in neutral sites in a tournament style format. At least to conclude the 2019-20 season.

Then for the 2020-21 season, I'm guessing the NHL will start in November and play a shortened season with limited capacity in arenas.

That's what I'm guessing given how things have been playing out both in the US and what I notice in Canada.

:iatp::iatp: I'm starting to think you're on the right track. MLB has talked about a truncated regular season played in Arizona. That's tournament style alright.

Wonder is Vegas area has enough arenas for 31 NHL teams to play out the regular season and the playoffs. There are clearly plenty of hotels in Vegas and a workforce ready and willing to come out of isolation and work.

It's interesting how crushing my opponents along the boards in NHL20 feels so damn good!
