Yankees trade:
MI Semien, Marcus, $1.5m (2020)
SP DeSclafani, Anthony, $5.5m (2019)
SP Fister, Doug, $4.5m (2019)
RP Watson, Tony, $4m (2019)
Giants trade:
OF Deatherage, Brock, $0.5m (P-n/a)
CI-MI Eaton, Nathan, $0.5m (P-n/a)
This trade is essentially for MI Marcus Semien. With the small pool of available MI free agents, along with their incessantly high salaries, the Giants are getting a relatively productive MI with a team friendly contract. The Giants are also getting a reliable RP in Tony Watson (another Giants player), although at $4.0m, he’s terribly overpriced. The fact that he is in the last year of his contract makes his acquisition bearable. Anthony DeSclafani, like many of the players the Giants have recently acquired, is a risk/reward, in that he is capable of being productive if he can stay healthy and he is also on an expiring contract. Hopefully he stays healthy and can return to form, because at age 28, he’s worth the risk. Doug Fister is retiring and will be dropped, but his inclusion was tied to the acquisition of Marcus Semien.
Yankees to confirm.
