*This doesn't affect my vote at all, just want to make sure I (and others) understand the releasing players rule:*Unless I'm reading the rules wrong, Philly would still save cap this year and in future years when releasing both of those players:
Any player dropped before the trade deadline still has part of his contract count against the cap in the following manner: Current year: 90%, Next year: 60%, All future years after: 30%.
2B Kipnis, Jason, $5.5m (2019)Kipness would still be owed 90% of his 2019 salary, so 5.5 x 0.9 = 4.95 = $5.0m (2019)
So a savings of $0.5m for 2019
SP Porcello, Rick, $6.7m (2022) Porcello would still be owed 90% of his 2019 salary, 60% of his 2020 salary, and 30% of his 2021 and 2022 salary.
2019: 6.7 x 0.9 = 6.03 = $6.0m (2019) ... So a savings of $0.7m for 2019
2020: 6.7 x 0.6 = 4.02 = $4.0m (2020) ... So a savings of $2.7m in the 2020 season
2021 and 2022: 6.7 x 0.3 = 2.01 = $2.0m (2021) and (2022) ... So a savings of $4.7m in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
So it certainly wouldn't end up with a -$18m cap penalty. He would save $1.3m in cap for 2019 and more in subsequent years.
Again, not changing my vote as it's still an excellent move by Philly to unload that Porcello contract, but just want to understand the rules and see how others interpret them as well. I know you didn't write them Cliff, so we're all learning a bit here.
