I've been looking for a big package for Barnes, and I really like the return of Nimmo and Reynolds. I think those 2 options should replace Barnes nicely.

With all trades, there is a risk/reward factor, and this one is no different.  This trade solidifies the Giants C position by acquiring a 28 year old who is on the rise.  Austin Barnes showed the Dodgers enough to become the everyday C throughout the postseason.  With the other Cs on the roster, the Giants seem set for years to come.

Trading away Brandon Nimmo, who is sizzling in Spring Training, was tough, but there were some factors to weigh.  Would his high production continue when he no longer faced Spring Training pitchers?  Would he do enough to be an everyday player or settle into a platoon with Juan Lagares?   Then there is the Michael Conforto factor—what happens when he returns from injury?  In terms of Brian Reynolds, he was a favorite, but the Giants do get back a promising OF in Heath Quinn.  The Giants also have a few SP prospects, so they could bear the loss of Scott Tanner to make the trade work.

Like all teams, the Giants can only focus on whether the trade improves their ability to compete.  The Giants believe Austin Barnes is a definite addition to its lineup.

If approved, this trade cannot be processed until 3/26/18 12:01 am ET because of the 60 day rule attached to Scott Tanner.
