ProFSL Challenge - Look Back at the Draft
« on: April 30, 2012, 10:20:38 AM »
A follow-up review of the ProFSL Challenge - http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/86600.

Are Yu Darvished Yet (Colby Schaeffer, www.profsl.com) –
reviewed by Pat

Overpaid For- Tulo at $61 was a little high here. Jose
Reyes, generally considered the number 2 shortstop coming into the year, went
for $18 less, and Albert Pujols went for one dollar less.

Bargain Deal- Roy Halladay at $31 turned out to be a good
investment, considering Verlander, King Felix, Lincecum, Cliff Lee, and Kershaw
all went for more. Brandon Phillips at $14 also seems pretty good considering
some of the other second base prices. A bunch of good buys at $1 on this team
too.

Sleeper- I’ll go with Matt Joyce here. He is a bit
underrated, having hit 19 home runs with 75 RBIs last year and going for a
dollar. He should be able to duplicate those numbers going under the radar
again.

Bust- Even though he got him cheap, I don’t see Chase Utley
putting together a productive season this year.

Miller Time (Rob Miller, www.profsl.com) - reviewed by Jason

Overpaid For- Carlos Santana at $32 sticks out like sore
thumb to me. Even with the dual
eligibility at catcher and first base, that’s more than 1/8th of his
budget for a guy that didn’t hit above .250 last year.

Bargain Deal- I really liked Andrew McCutchen at $30 but I
think that’s a fair price for him.
Brandon Beachy at $8 is pure brilliance. He’s strikeout machine with a low WHIP that, if he stays
healthy, could have a breakout seaon.

Sleeper- Francisco Liriano for a buck? Sign me up please! The guy’s been lights out this spring
and there’s no risk in spending a dollar with his pedigree. By the way – guess how old Liriano
is? He’s only 28 years old. Doesn’t it feel like he’s been around
as long as like, Andy Pettitte?

Bust- I’m not totally aboard the Desmond Jennings
bandwagon. I could be wrong but at
$17 I’d rather grab a guy that I’ve seen do it before like Shane Victorino
($15), Shin-Soo Choo ($11) or even Chris Young ($5).

Bowen Bandits (Corey Ramsey, www.profsl.com) - reviewed by Pat

Overpaid For- I understand and love the position
eligibility, but $26 for Michael Young seems a bit pricy. If he hits nearly
.340 again with over 100 RBIs I’m wrong, but if he regresses back to about
.300, he won’t get that value.

Bargain Deal- Jose Valverde at $5 is really good after
looking at what some other relievers went for, as well as Ricky Romero at $10.
Shaun Marcum at $2 can be a steal too if he’s healthy.

Sleeper- If Justin Morneau stays healthy, the value he can
bring at $4 in tremendous.

Bust- I don’t think Asdrubal Cabrera will repeat his success
from a year ago, and I’d be happier starting his league teammate, Emilio
Bonifacio, at his $11 and use the other money elsewhere.

Hippeaux (IIATMS) (Hippeaux C. Bold, thesportinghippeaux.blogspot.com/)
- reviewed by Jason

Overpaid For- Pat and I purposely threw Stephen Strasburg
out there just to get someone to overpay for him. $25 for a guy coming off arm surgery with an innings cap? Mission accomplished.

Bargain Deal- Getting Zack Greinke at $19 is nice, but Adam
Jones for $1 is even nicer. Jones
could finish the year as a top 20 outfielder and went for the same price as
Denard Span and Yoenis Cespedes.

Sleeper- The easy one is Carl Crawford at $16, so instead,
let’s go Derek Holland for $3. Did
anyone remember this guy made 32 starts last year with four complete games?

Bust- Hindsight is 20/20, but considering he’s out for the
season, I gotta go with Ryan Madson at $5.

The Sherpas (Scott Swanay, www.fantasybaseballsherpa.com)
- reviewed by Pat

Overpaid For- With the benefit of hindsight, Michael Pineda
at $9 is the choice here, but it’s hard to fault The Sherpas at the time,
though there were some concerns.

Bargain Deal- Ryan Madson’s injury worked out for The
Sherpas, as they got Sean Marshall at a bargain price. J.J. Putz at $3 is also
a good deal so long he stays healthy, which is obviously always a risk with
Putz. Looking at what some other first basemen went for, Paul Konerko at $18
isn’t too shabby.

Sleeper- My pick here is Lucas Duda at a buck. He should end
up with a full season’s worth of at bats under his belt this year, and he could
easily hit anywhere from 20-25 home runs.

Bust- Mat Latos at $9 isn’t bad value, but I don’t like his
change from Petco to the Great American Ballpark. I think that can catch up to
him this year and his stats may suffer a bit.

Fantasy 6th Man (Pat and Jason Consoli, www.fantasy6thman.com)
- reviewed by Jason

Overpaid For- Pat knows exactly what I’m going to say for
this – I’m not a huge fan of Cole Hamels at $25. I think he’ll be just fine this year, but I look at what
some of the other pitchers below him went for (Greinke at $19, Matt Cain at
$18) and think we reached for him a bit.

Bargain Deal- It’s hard to be objective when the Captain’s
our starting shortstop for a buck…I don’t wanna do it…screw it – WE GOT THE
CAPTAIN FOR A BUCK! ONE
DOLLAR! EL CAPITAN!

Sleeper- I’m a big Vinnie Pestano fan. I think it’s totally possible he takes
over as the closer of the Indians at some point this season and rattles off 30
saves, so for $3 there’s some upside to him.

Bust- Berkman and Beltran could easily spend the entire
season on the DL, but since Dan Uggla cost us the same amount as both of them
combined ($13), I think he’s the one with the most potential to
disappoint.

Minor Developments
(Rob Steingall, http://www.snywhyguys.com/
and http://sports.yahoo.com/fantasy)
- reviewed by Pat

Overpaid For- Although I like him to have a nice year and
you can use him at a relief pitcher spot, Cory Luebke is a bit overpriced at
$16.

Bargain Deal- I think he has Joey Votto-like potential, and
that means at $21 Eric Hosmer could end up being an absolute steal. However,
Howie Kendrick at a buck is awesome, especially since he has 3-position
eligibility and he is hitting in front of Albert Pujols now. Chris Young, Josh
Beckett, and Hiroki Kuroda were nice cheap buys too.

Sleeper- Going out on a limb here, but given his relief
pitcher eligibility, spot in the rotation, and new ballpark, Hector Noesi could
return a lot of value at $1. Also like Chris Sale at $5.

Bust- He was bought at a low price so there is nothing wrong
with the buy, but I don’t like Andre Ethier this year. His power numbers have
continued to drop, and I question whether he will ever get back to that 30-100
season he had a couple years back.

Light Tower Power
(Clint Chisam, http://www.mlbdepthcharts.com/)
- reviewed by Jason

Overpaid For- I’m a big fan of “Show me why you’re worth it
before I pay for it”, so Brett Lawrie for $24 is a little too much for me when
Aramis Ramirez went for $9.

Bargain Deal- It’s hard to go against Justin Upton at $39 (I
think he could be the #1 outfielder in baseball this year) but I can’t ignore
Johnny Cueto for $1. He was FILTHY
last year.

Sleeper- Cameron Maybin for $7 has a ridiculous amount of
upside AND he’s only 25 years old.
Pat, do you remember what famous trade he was involved in?

Bust- If Mike Napoli plays in 140 games this season, he’ll
do more than earn the $23 that was spent on him. Problem is he’s only done that once in the past six years.

Sportsvault (Matt
Zuvella, https://sportsvault.net/) -
reviewed by Pat

Overpaid For- He is the greatest closer of all time, in my
opinion the only “safe” closer there is, but $15 for any closer is too much,
even if its Mariano Rivera.

Bargain Deal- Jon Lester can end up winning a Cy Young any
year with his stuff, and $18 for him is a great deal considering some of the
other options that went at or above that price. Michael Bourn, and Jayson Werth
to an extent, are both great at $7 too.

Sleeper- For $2, I will take Edwin Encarnacion’s 25 homer,
85 RBI potential any day. Being a full time DH should help him stay healthy and
hopefully reach those goals.

Bust- A lot of closers on this team, so I am gonna pick one
of them here. Of all of them, I have a feeling Heath Bell might bring the least
bang for his buck.

Chico’s Bail Bonds –
(Mike Myers, http://tpfs.com/) - reviewed by
Jason

Overpaid For- This one’s really grasping at straws, but take
your pick of either Miggy Cabrera at $68 or Pujols at $60. And that’s only because they spent half
their budget to get both of them.

Bargain Deal- Sean Rodriguez is going to get the majority of
the at-bats for the Rays at shortstop, so getting him for $4 was a great
buy. Also props for getting Martin
Prado for $2.

Sleeper- I had Alfredo Aceves here but, after watching him
blow his first save chance of the season, let’s go back to the drawing
board. How about Brandon Belt for
$2 or Colby Rasmus for $4? They
actually made their respective rosters this year and, last time I checked, they
were both “can’t miss” prospects at one point in time. It’s gotta click sometime, right?

Bust- I know I’m in the minority on this one but I don’t
think the Tigers are going to be all that good this year. Their defense strikes me as being less
than stellar; therefore a ground-ball pitcher like Doug Fister ($8) scares me.

Moonlight Graham
(Eddie Mayrose, http://fantasysportsdirt.com/)
- reviewed by Pat

Overpaid For- I don’t see Ryan Zimmerman being worth more
than Adrian Beltre, or more than double the price of David Wright if he is
healthy. $29 seems like a bit much for Zimmerman.

Bargain Deal- A lot of nice $1 buys here. Jhonny Peralta
sticks out as a good one at a weak position. But Joe Mauer seems healthy, and
if he can play a full year, he is a steal at $16.

Sleeper- I’m gonna pick Dexter Fowler here to finally take
that leap and become an exciting young center fielder. He has the skills to do
it, and at $1 why not take the chance?

Bust- This one can go either way, but I am gonna take the
longer road for Matt Moore. Too much hype surrounding him, I don’t think he
pitches up to the level that everyone is expecting from him.

Plymouth Zubaz (Jake
Douglas, www.profsl.com) - reviewed by
Jason

Overpaid For- Mark Reynolds at $16 makes me nauseous. Do I have to say more? I didn’t think so. Let’s move on.

Bargain Deal- B.J. Upton for $1? What’s the opposite of nauseous? Because that’s what I am when I think of this pick. Great value late in the draft.

Sleeper- We’re going all Kansas City with the sleepers and
busts. I’m a gambling man and I
totally see Greg Holland taking the closer job for the Royals plus getting a
ton of strikeouts in the process.
$4 for a guy I bet finishes in the top 10 of saves this year.

Bust- On the other end of the spectrum, Jonathan Broxton’s
like a big plate of smoke BBQ ribs – done. You guys have heard of Joe Torre, right? Does everyone know what Joe Torre does
to relief pitchers not named Mariano Rivera? He ruins them.
