Well before maybe two years ago, that would have been a serious question.
I still don't fully understand a few things, but thanks for the refresher!

You trade all of your best players to teams, alphabetically. Well looks like Anaheim gets first dibs....

Bids are in format of total contract value. Note that the number of years does not need to be listed until the bid is won. The resulting salary will be the final bid divided by number of years, rounded to the nearest $100k. The winning bid will be the highest total contract amount.
So if I win a guy at $5 Million, I could give him 1 year for 5M, or 5 years a 1M?
-

If you win someone @ $5M you have the option of a 1, 2 or 3 year deal:
1 @ $5M
2 @ $2.5m
3 @ 1.7M
You can't sign him to a 4 or 5 year deal unless the total contract is $5.5+ per the contract limits rule:
Contract Limits
Except for any contract inherited in 2011, all contracts must be no longer than five years. Also, for a given salary, all contacts (extension, FA) have term limits (max years contract can be per the salary) as provided below.
<= $1.4m, 2 years
$1.5m - $5.4m, 3 years
$5.5m - $7.9m, 4 years
>=$8m, 5 years (the overall limit)

It is up, I sent an email invite, perhaps I have the wrong address? Let me know your email again so I can check it.

I had a question about the entry draft. Is there a predetermined amount of draft picks that we will have to take in the draft? Let's say I only have 6 available spots on my team and we have 10 rounds for the draft how would that work out?

The draft will be 10 rounds but if you only need/want 6 players you can pass after round 6. Though you can also release players to make room for draftees. Decent prospects should be out there in the later rounds.

Can we draft prospects and put them on our prospect team?
-
Can we draft prospects and put them on our prospect team?
Yup, as long as they're eligible you can send them straight to your prospect roster.
-
I think we should look at the cap hits for releasing players. I don't think it should be a 100% cap hit. What about players that retire, get injured and don't play anymore etc.. I think we should adopt the tiered system that is used in many other leagues. Like a 75% cap hit for first year, 50% hit for second year, and say a 25% for third year. With us getting our rosters we should have the options of at least having three free drops or something along those lines.
-
For the Contraction draft, how are we picking the draft positions? By randon simulation? or another method?
-
Can we trade any combination of players, picks and cash?
Also, do we use the real contracts of the people we draft?
And what about the contracts of the FAs after the draft, all those all off of bidding?
-

I was actually already thinking about the best way to do this. I don't really like the tiered system as it's just more work (I like simplicity, keeps my head on straight). I was thinking a flat reduction for everything after the year they are released. I definitely want to do something for retired players and long term IR. Let me get through the initial rosters and extensions then we'll dive into this.

By last years regular season standings in reverse order, non-snaking.
-

Yup
Also, do we use the real contracts of the people we draft?
Yes, even if they signed it after our roster effective date. Whatever contract they have at the moment they are picked is their contract in DNHL. If they're still on the FA market they must be extended immediately.
And what about the contracts of the FAs after the draft, all those all off of bidding?
Yup, exactly.

Just as a suggestion, usually leagues will allow a couple of free drops with no cap hits. We can also build in a retirement clause to where you would only be responsible for 50% on the contract remaining. The contract could also be bought out if you have the cap space. I just feel like if we are responsible for 100% cap hits on releasing players there should be at least 3 free drops to start. We shouldn't penalize GM's for contracts they had no control over. Thanks for taking this into consideration. :toth:

Totally agree with ya Papps.
Definitely think that we should have something for retirement or injured guys.
I think I run mine with you don't owe them anything if they retire, but if you cut them (give up their rights), you don't get them back should they come back.
Now that I'm thinking about it, we could even have something like this for players that go overseas.
-
:iatp: I agree that there should be some sort of retirement clause. It isn't a GM's fault if a player chooses to retire. Plus the NHL doesn't make teams pay out the contracts of retired players, that would be ridiculous. Half of my free agents are on the border of retiring, I could sign them before they decide, only to have them retire and loss all that money and cap space.
-
When and how can I add to the prospect list? Currently have 7 of 10 on roster.
-
When and how can I add to the prospect list? Currently have 7 of 10 on roster.
Anytime. Just make a post on the Transaction board with your changes.
-
Here's the changes I am proposing:
Releasing players
Any released player signed for less than $1m will not count against the cap. Any released player signed for $1m+ still has his contract count against the cap. The released contract will count for 3 years at the most. So any released contracts over 4 years long only count for 3 years. If the released player is signed by another team the original team will receive a 50% reduction to the players cap hit (years stay the same). If the original team bids on the released player he is still responsible for the original contract (no reduction) in addition to the new contract. Any player released under a prospect contract will not cause a hit to the cap.
Longterm Injured Reserve
Each team will have one Longterm IR slot. Any player on LITR does not count against their teams cap.
Retired Players
All contracts for players who retire from the NHL are considered null and void.
I think these changes give everyone the flexibility they need. After thinking it over a bit I'm not a fan of giving free drops or yearly reductions. Some teams are in better shape than others financially, but these are the teams we all picked. Part of the fun is digging a franchise out of the hole, in some cases. Making it too cheap to drop contracts will water down the league I think.
-
If I release Scot Gomez's 7.4M contract and someone picks him via free agency for 2M, do i still get the full 3.7M 50% off?
-

Yup, if someone picks him up it would be 3.7m for 3 years.

I'd much rather have a tiered system than nulling contracts under $1M.
First off, there are gonna be hardly any contracts under $1M, and not to mention that it's not as hard as it sounds! lol
-
I agree with Rob.
-
When is the deadline for extensions? Also when will the draft start?
There's a couple teams who have not joined Fantrax yet that I'm waiting to hear back from. I want to make sure we have all teams ready to go before we set the draft. If they don't respond soon we have a couple people on the waiting list to take the teams. Once everyone's on board I'll set a date for the draft. I'm hoping to start in the next couple weeks. I'll give you all 1 weeks notice before the draft starts. The extension deadline is 1 day before the draft begins.

I think if it is 2m instead of 1m it would be better. I agree there aren't many contracts that are under 1m that this would effect.

Can I carry prospects on my roster at 200K a pop?

Nope, you can carry fewer than 30.

Yup!

I had a question about position eligibility. How will they be updated, does Fantrax do it automatically? Also, will there be dual positional players? I know for instance, that Datsyuk and Zetterberg are usually C/LW's because they play both roles frequently during the year. It'd help to know what positions my player can fall under, because it help with my draft strategy and identifying my needs.

Great question and I wish I had the answer. I've been trying to figure out how Fantrax determines position eligibility for weeks. After searching every nook and crany of the site I finally emailed the admins. The response I got was that their stats provider, Stats Inc., determines eligibility subjectively. So, at some point this summer I'm assuming they will edit player eligibility. When it will be done? No clue. How it will be determined? No clue..... I'd really love to know if Seguin will be eligible for the wing next year but we'll just have to wait and see.
-
It really sucks because some players that were dual eligible last yr are not anymore, it's like they did a complete overhaul and set to single positions. I always though it took them to play a certain amount on another position to be added to dual (Games or TOI im not sure) but they usually dont re-set them like they did this yr. Really threw my roster for a loop in a few other leagues as I drafted players for their dual eligibility!!!
-
Are we going to be able to see the contracts for the players eligible for the contraction draft? Can we get a thread listing the players with their contracts or at least a link to where we can find the contracts ourselves? I think this would be great to research before the draft starts.
-
papps, hockeybuzz.com is a great resource! They have every contract listed by team!!
-

Yup, hockeybuzz is what I use as well. Since you inherit the players' contract at the time of the pick I didn't list out the contracts. If a FA is signed our info would be wrong and I didn't want to edit it for every NHL signing.

CapGeek is another good site: http://www.capgeek.com/search.php

I have a question, Were the rosters set at the end of the 2011 season?
If so why does Philly have Bryzgalov?

The official roster deadline was 6/15 (the last day of the finals). Philly had traded for the negotiating rights to Bryz prior to that date.

got it thanks.

Can the LTIR be used for any player or do they need to be injured in the NHL to be used?
-
I had a questions about FA's. Let's look at a guy like Fleischman. He is a FA on the Flames in our league, but got traded and signed with the Panthers in real life. Lets say Gilly doesn't sign him, he goes into the draft, if someone drafts him will you have to pay him the contract he has in reality or the one determined by our contract extension rankings?
-
I'm pretty sure we would go by whatever the contract states on hockeybuzz or capgeek. I am pretty sure it is the contract they currently have in the NHL at the time they are drafted! Dont quote me but im 90% sure!

"All contraction players keep their current contracts-not the contracts as of our roster effective date, but their contract as of the day you draft them. So if X player is a FA on 6/16 but is signed by a team before our draft, you inherit his new contract. " per the Rules thread.

Do you think this applies to rookies too? Elite prospects often get signing bonuses at count against a teams cap, will we have to pay this or just 200k for everyone under 40 NHL games? I was meaning to ask Rob this but I forgot. He should be able to answer when he gets back from vacation.

Pretty sure all prospects are 200k

The player needs to be on the actual NHL IR.

Non-contraction players like unsigned FA's and unkept prospects follow the same rules as contraction players for the draft. So if Gilly doesn't sign Fleischman he'll get a normal inherited contract, even though he was in the Flames possession and technically had a value per the extension rules. That is moot once he's dropped and the contract he has when he's drafted will apply.
-

All players with less than 40 games played as of our effective date are prospects and inherit $200k contracts. The actual NHL contracts are dismissed entirely. When bidding on prospects during FA anything over $200k will be paid as a signing bonus. I think this keeps things pretty simple and helps ease our initial cap hits.

This is a question about the draft. Do we have a 12 hour clock for each pick?
-
Can prospects drafted in the 2011 NHL draft by contracted teams be drafted in the contraction draft or will they be treated as FA after the draft?

Yes, I may decrease the timer as we get farther into the draft depending on how fast it's going.

They can be drafted.

What happens if he comes of IR and I do not have enough money for his contract?
-
Could I move Toni Lydman to LTIR now?

Yes, and you're not required to immediately remove players from LTIR when they get healthy. So you can leave them there while you work out a trade to get under the cap.
-
Why is Toni Lydman on LTIR and his salary is still counted against the cap?
-

My error. I'll fix it tomorrow. Just ignore his payroll for now. Sorry 'bout that.
-
Also you guys may notice that released and LTIR players still count towards your roster limit. This is an error in the spreadsheet that I'll get fixed. For now just subtract any released/LTIR players from your roster total to see where you're really at.
Thanks,
Rob

This is now fixed (thanks to Colby). On the next roster update this problem won't exist.

In a baseball league I'm in when they started they let them have a one time free drops and when any new owner took over a team they also aloud them to make free drops. As someone suggested maybe giving everyone 1 free onetime only drop is what we need

Yea, it would be too late.
It could be a change for next year, but Idk who would want to?
-
I do like things the way there are. But a change we could think about is raising the salary cap to 75 mil, but not until after the draft finishes. To make any changes to cap space, or add/drop rules right now wouldn't really be that fair everyone because everyone planned their draft strategies for a 70 mil cap. However, if we raised it to 75 mil after the draft, everyone will have drafted under the same conditions and the additional cap space can be used on free agents not taken in the draft and more trades between teams before and during the season.
The NHL has 23 man rosters and a cap of 65 mil. Our league has 30 man rosters and only a cap of 70 mil, while its true we do enjoy cheaper prospect contracts, one of the thrills of fantasy sports is getting talented (often expensive) players on your team. Anyway, I think its just something to think about.

Doesn't sound like a half bad idea Izaman!
How would we go about this, a vote?
-
Brian and I talked about having the cap at $75m originally and I thought with prospects so cheap it made sense to lower it to $70m. Personally I like it where it is. I think in general all teams involved have had maneuverability cap-wise, save maybe papps. With so much activity here we've all had opportunity to fix some of our problems. I don't think $75m is unreasonable but I'm a fan of the smaller cap. I think it more often rewards teams that make the best decisions long-term. Furthermore I don't like the idea of changing it this season. Some teams may have planned better than others and might have made different decisions if they knew they had an extra $5m coming their way, like extending players that they decided not to extend. If one GM decided to save a certain amount of cash to bring to FA bidding and perhaps not draft a player they would have drafted to do this, we'll be nullifying their advantage. If we do increase the cap I think it should happen for the 12/13 season.
-
Have you thought about reducing the roster to 1 active goalie a night? With 20 teams in the league it means that only half the teams can really have 2 actual starting goalies. The rest are left to piecing together backups for that 2nd starter position. might be giving an unfair competitive advantage to some teams.
I am running a 16 team league now and we still only run at 1 active. Makes it a strategic/hard choice on who to start on any given night.
I wouldn't recommend changing it right away due to messing up peoples strategies but just a thought for maybe a year or two from now.

It's not a bad idea. Though some have stocked up on goalies for exactly this reason so I'd hate to screw them over. Maybe we can see how year 1 goes then revisit this in the next offseason and see how people feel about it.
-

Now who would have stocked up on goalies ,,,,, ahem anahiem...cough cough....
I will be curious to see what kind of advantage if any it gives the teams that did. Being a points based league there may not be that much advantage. I am used to playing head to head category leagues where it can potentially have a big impact.

I think it will definitely be an advantage for teams who have 2 starting goalies. Though, teams without 2 starters can mitigate the difference by picking up backup goalies and paying close attention to when they're playing and starting them in those games.
-
For what its worth, I think maybe a 3rd of NHL teams will have kind of that 60/40 or 65/35 split on goalies. I think the days of guys like Brodeur playing 75 games a year is slowly shifting.
-
We are now halfway through the draft and free agency is sort of close, so I was wondering if there was a maximum number of years we can sign a guy to? Are we going to allow some DiPietro contracts of 15 years or have a max number?

contract rules can be found here http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?topic=24544.0
Max length for a contract is 5 years.

Alrighty, I guess it does pay to read. Thank you

Our maximum contract length is 5 years. Since the yearly amounts are flat we have no need to spread money across multiple decades like they do in the NHL. I think it's silly how that works and didn't want to replicate that mess!

so after the draft, do all the players that are still available go out to FA? and would it just be a bidding war after that?

Free Agency bidding?
If and when someone bids on Scott Gomez (a real steal), when would 50% of his salary be applied to my salary cap?

when can we start bidding on FA?
Soon. I'm going to finish entering the draft today and get all the players added. Then I'd like to give a little time for makeup picks. I'm thinking Noon tomorrow FA bidding will open but I'll announce it officially once I wrap up the draft. :toth:
-
YAY FA! :bump:
-
I know the FA bid on a player is final after 48 hours from the first bid, but in that way it kind of seems like Ebay where someone can just slip in a bid at the last minute there for the win. Is there any kind of gentlemanly protocol to this?

It's 48 hours from the last bid. So once a bid goes unanswered for 48 hours, the last bid wins it.
-
Ohhhh... that makes it much nicer. Thanks

just for clarification on the releasing rules. Say i have a player like cody mcleod he is exactly 1 mill salary. if i released him would he still count against my cap?

Yes he would count against your cap. Anyone under $1m doesn't count:
"Any released player signed for $1m+ still has his contract count against the cap."
-
That's the way i understood it as well. booooo
:agent:

Since this is my first Dynasty league wanted clarification on this before i do too much FA bidding.
The numbers here are for their yearly salary not total contract?
<= $1.4m, 2 years
$1.5m - $5.4m, 3 years
$5.5m - $7.9m, 4 years
>=$8m, 5 years (the overall limit)

Yup. So for example if you win a player for $6m you have the option of signing him for 1y @ 6m, 2y @ 3m, or 3y @ 2m. You couldn't do 4y @ 1.5m as the minimum for a 4 year deal is 5.5m per year.
-
thanks and whoops, glad i found that out now. before i did anything too crazy. my bid on sutter maybe crazy enough as it is.
-
I fixed the rules to make that more clear:
Contract Limits
Except for any contract inherited in 2011, all contracts must be no longer than five years. Also, for a given salary, all contracts (extension, FA) have term limits (max years contract can be per the yearly salary) as provided below.
-
Thanks and dont get me wrong, if I get sutter at 1.63 for the next 3 years i will be more than happy to take that.
-
I am apparently that guy to make the first mistake. I read the contract rules as total contract not yearly. Can i change my bid for Enstrom and Laich?
-

Since we just started, it was unclear in the rules and there's no other bids on those players I'm fine with that. Please don't edit your posts though, just reply to it with your correction. The reason for this is anyone can edit their bids before I enter them, so I have to scrutinize any posts that show as edited. No bids should ever be edited.
-
Actually I'll just remove those bids. You can repost bids for those players.
-
Gypsie, the contract is TOTAL contract ( I am pretty sure) so if you won Enstrom for 4.5M you could sign him for 2.3M per yr for 2 yrs for an example. I am pretty sure how this goes?
I hope LOL

His original bids were much higher as he was thinking he could break an 11m bid into 5 years, for instance.

Exactly what I was thinking as the 11m was over the 8m needed for a 5 year contract, or so I thought. It is all good now though

Can Scott Gomez be bid on as a FA or is he consider waived and you would have to take on his current salary?
-
Can Scott Gomez be bid on as a FA or is he consider waived and you would have to take on his current salary?
He's a FA. Any released players are considered FA's and the releasing team will get a reduction to the cap hit if they're signed.
-
oh, ok , i understood it as they needed to be claimed off waivers to get the reduction.

A question has come up about being over the cap in regards to winning a FA bid. Are we at no point in time to be allowed over the cap or can we win a bid that would put us over, and then work out a trade to get back under?
I have been operating on the principal that whatever bids I currently have out that I would be able to cover if I were to win them all at that very moment.
-

At no point should teams be over the cap. This is something that's very tough for me to audit so if you do exceed your cap on a winning bid the bid will be null and void and the player will go back to FA status. So, it's the teams' responsibility to make sure they're always under the cap, to avoid losing a winning bid.
-
What if you have a player you can drop immediately that is under the 1 mill salary mark?
I can see not allowing it when someone has to make a trade but the latter is simply a roster move.
-
Do we have the max winnig bid rule? Like we can only have 5 winning bids open at a time or is it a free for all and we can have as many as we like??
-

That would be fine. If someone does exceed their cap I'll message them to see if they can make a roster move to afford the winning bid. If not, the bid is null and void.
-

No limit, you can have 30 at once if you have the cap/roster room for it.

Are we allowed to move players back and forth from Major and MilR, as long as they are under the 40 game limit

Yup, just post on the transaction board so I can update your roster. You can move them on Fantrax yourself.

anybody want to do winner predictions, 1 vote cant vote for yourself??

I'd go with Philly. Strong team top to bottom. Vokoun and Bryz will anchor them and he's got lots of point producers.

I'd go with Anaheim. They have crazy good top tier guys at all positions and so many goalies.

Right now I cannot drop 1 player and activate Tony Lydman when he gets healthy.
Really don't want to drop a few.
What are my options?
Can I give Toni Lydman away with cash making it possible for someone to afford his contract?
Can I sell a player(s) for cash?
What if I drop someone - he clears waivers - I am still on the hook.
What is the time frame for me to activate him?
Can I leave him on injured reserve?

Yes, you can trade Lydman for any combination of cash, prospects or players or you can sell other players for cash or cheaper players. If you want Lydman back in your lineup when he's healthy, which should be soon, you'll have to make something work to free up the cap space. If you drop a player and he is claimed by another team you will only be responsible for half of that contract, but if he clears waivers you will be on the hook for the full amount until the contract expires.
There is no timeframe per se, but at the end of the year if a player on your LTIR is healthy he will be removed from LTIR at that point. So, theoretically you can let him rot on your LTIR for the entire 11/12 campaign. This differs from how the NHL handles it where teams have to activate players once they're physically able to play again, but I thought forcing players back from IR immediately would hamper our cap situations too much. For our purposes LTIR is a cap relief tool and I wanted teams to be able to use the cash from their injured players contracts and not have to worry about trading or dropping to get under the cap once a player is healthy.
Our LTIR is not intended for players who are day to day or minor injuries. Like the NHL it's intended for players who will be out an extended period of time (10 games or 24 days).
I realize I didn't flesh any of this out in the rules, I'll do that now.
-
so on Fantrax are we free to call up and demote players from the minors as needed? or do they have to be on our dynasty active roster to be used?
-

They should be on your official active roster. To use them you'll need to post in the transaction board calling them up then you can add them to your active roster on Fantrax.

So I could extend Spacek from one to two years and decrease what I owe him this year?
Rankings last 2 years ...91 - 122 = 2.9M (12-13)

No if you extend during a contract the new contract must be for no less and no shorter than the current contract.

lets say i put a claim on turris, his current salary is 1.6 million, so i would get him for 800k a year, right?
Now lets say I decided I dont want him and drop/waive him, would I be 1) responsible for his salary because the original is 1.6 million or 2)would I be able to drop him without penalty since I am only paying him 800k a year?

No, per the rule on releasing players picked up on waivers:
***Players claimed through waivers may not be released in the year they are claimed***

That doesn't appear to be possible on Fantrax for some reason.

What is the tiebreaker between 2 teams? It appears that more than a few teams might end up with the same record. Would you just go by the most amount of Fantasy Points For. That would seem like it is the easiest.

Thanks for asking since I've been meaning to fix this. Tiebreakers work as follows:
Standings Tie Breakers
1. Most fantasy points for entire season
2. Head-to-head record
Before, H2H was the first tiebreaker which was incorrect. This is fixed so the "Combined Standings" will now reflect this.

To increase the number of teams on fantrax that make playoffs you have to change the last scoring period under the playoffs tab to week 22 (Feb 27 - mar 4). After that you should be able to do 10.
I think it give the top 6 teams a bye for the 1st week, the bottom 4 playoff and winners move on to make your 8 team playoff.

Is it possible to get like a permanent Trading Block thread? We could have each teams logo and under that we could go in there and put people that are on our trading block. The way the draft thread looked. I think that would be easier for quick glances then rooting through posts on the Trade Negotiations thread to keep up to date.
Just a little thought.

You mean like a separate child board to go alongside Rules - Official Rosters - Transactions?

I think I meant just below the Trade Negotiations thread. You know some threads only go to the top when someone posts in it and the Q&A, Trade Negotiations, Waiting List are all locked up at the top. Whatever that might be called is what I was after.

Some of those trade blocks are a little old. As people post their players that are available to trade I will update that first post so that everyone can access the information quickly without sifting through the whole thread.
That work?

I was reading about the entry draft. I understand that I can pick 3 players from my team's draft, but I have a few other questions...
1. Do I have the #1 overall pick in the two round draft? (Please don't tell me he traded that away too)
2. If Columbus gets #1 overall pick, then I can take that guy right? No one can keep him because no one is Columbus in this league, correct?

1) Yup, luckily he didn't trade his pick away.
2) Yup, you're pretty much guaranteed to get the first overall pick in the supplemental draft. The only way you wouldn't is if Columbus trades that pick away to a team that's in our league, then that team would be able to keep that player as an entry draft keeper.

question about extensions. Lets say I have a player that would currently extend at 4.9 million so the max is 3 yrs but I see a lot of potential in this player. Can i choose to bump him to 5.4 million and extend for 4 years?

say an older player goes to the KHL or an overseas league will that be considered similar to retirement? I am thinking someone like Hasek that is still playing but really has no intention to ever return to the NHL.
Maybe we should have a stipulation if they are say over 35 and bolt for the K then they would be considered retired but under 35 you are still stuck with their contract.

Maybe if the player is out of the NHL for at least 1 year then they could be considered retired for our purposes. Turco played in the EE last year but signed with the Bruins when Rask went down.
35+ years old and out of the league for a full season = retired. Sound good?

Well played on Turco. I really don't have anyone like that on my team so was more curious than anything. I suppose that is what we have the option to drop a guy to the minors for. I say if they are still playing somewhere they aren't officially retired so no different than a guy that has been sent to the AHL.

Are the minor max players able to increase? With the entry draft keepers and supplemental wont it get teams close to max?
And also am I able to get a released player back since no one picked him up like my D Michalek??
-
When does FA period begin?
-
Our FA was supposed to start after this supplemental draft that is currently ongoing, but Rob said we could start it once all the entry level draft keepers were determined. So, I'd say technically it has begun right now. Our draft is nearly over so it'll be soon either way.
-
As much as I want the FA to start I think it was intended to start after the rookie draft and should probably hold off until Rob is back.
My other league we are waiting until the start of pre-season so that all the owners are active and back into hockey again.
-
Hey rob any answer to my question??
-
Are the minor max players able to increase? With the entry draft keepers and supplemental wont it get teams close to max?
We could discuss an increase to the minor league roster limit. I think the 10 player roster forces teams to make tough decisions. I had to make a couple this year to stay within the limit, and I am going to have to make a couple more since my minor league roster has 2 too many players. Make a post on the main board to gather opinions on it if you feel strongly that a change needs to be made.
And also am I able to get a released player back since no one picked him up like my D Michalek??
No, all released players go to FA. You can bid on him then.

If you bid on him you still have to pay the cap hit for the previously released contract. So if you re-sign him for $2m a year you'll effectively be paying him $6m.
-
So if someone bids on him do I get any discount on his buyout?

None :( That cap hit is locked in.

During free agency when we are bidding on guys who still qualify for prospect contracts, like Jakob Silfverberg for instance, does any bid over just the prospect contract count as a signing bonus?
So right now Beantown has a 1m bid in, does that all just count as a 1m signing bonus this year? How does that work?
-

After winning a bid like that you can decide whether to sign the player to a prospect contract or a NHL contract. So in that example Beantown could sign the player to a prospect contract at $200k with a $800k signing bonus, or to a NHL contract at $1m for 1 year or $500k for 2 years.
-
Prospect contracts will be more valuable once we add the prospect extension discount.

That Khudobin contract that is being battled out is either going to be a huge signing bonus or a bummer on missing out on this prospect extension discount. Best of luck

You're not doing anything wrong. Colby is doing a lot of upgrades to the board and hasn't updated the league links yet. Everything should be setup soon. For now use the link Anthony provided. You should see the league under My Leagues in Fantrax either way.

2 questions - 1- if I bump Mark Barberio to my minors does he have to clear waivers?
2 when we are setting our lines I have a lot of players on my main roster and minor league that could be getting playing time. Are we able to bump and drop players to our scoring roster from minor league as needed or is this against the rules.
I noticed on fantrax this doesnt seem to be blocked.

1) No, if he's under the minor league games played threshold you can move him back and forth as much as you want.
2) You need to post a transaction moving players to and from your main roster in order to use them in your lineup. Moving a player from the minors to your starting roster without making an official roster move is illegal.

Good question. Due to the lockout there's no all-star game to use for our extension rule. For this season I will amend the rule to read as follows:
Contract extensions are based on looking up the player's highest ranking by position in both the current season and the last season. If an extension is done during the season and before February 18th 2013, then the previous TWO seasons and the current season must be looked at. In the off-season, the last two seasons will be used. If a player has multiple positions, the contract must be equal to, or greater than, the higher salary of the positions.
Any extensions done before 2/18/13 use 10/11, 11/12 and 12/13 for ranking.
Any extensions done after 2/18/13 use 11/12 and 12/13 for ranking.

Yes, other than new FA bids you can make all other transactions; buyouts, callups, etc.
After the playoffs we'll rollover to the new year, 13/14.

No, they have 1 more year. Any P-2013 contracts are actually 2013/2014 contracts, I just have no way to indicate that on my spreadsheet.

Has the NHL locked down the 13/14 cap already? I got the impression they did, but I was waiting to be sure. Once that's official I'll post the 14/15 DNHL cap. It's going to be close to what our 12/13 cap was.

ok, i just dont want to sign or extend some guys and then have a big 10 or 15 mill drop in cap space.

how long do we have after the draft to get our minor league down to 10?
I really don't start bugging people about that until right before the season. As long as you don't have over 40 players total, you can figure out who to call up later on.

What were the teams that changed for this draft year?
I think Calgary, Florida and Phoenix changed their team, but what were they originally? I'm trying to figure out what where our draft picks correspond with the NHL draft.

It's probably right in front of me somewhere and I just can't see it, haha.

There's nothing set in stone. We have to select our keepers first which I'll probably givea couple weeks for. Them we can start it after that.

Oh okay, makes sense.
And what was the rule...?
We keep 3 of our teams' (or previous team's if we relocated) draftees?

Yup. Up to 3. Teams can start selecting their keepers anytime after the draft.

i dont quite recall, when the cap goes down do the extension costs get adjusted as well?

The extension prices will be adjusted to mirror the NHL once the season begins. Prices should come down with the NHL cap decrease.

I was wondering how signing bonuses are working this FA period. I know we mostly used them last year to bid up prospects to keep their prospect contract status. Can we use signing bonuses for any player?

Signing bonuses are effectively out the window now that we're not bidding on prospects. They can't be used for other players. There's no minimum contract length on FA pickups so it doesn't make much sense.
-
ohhhhh, welll that is going to change my FA strategy a bit. To be honest , I was planning on using my extra cap space to bid say a 3 year @ 2 million but front load with a signing bonus. at 5mill , so my contract bid could be 11million.
Why are we throwing the signing bonus out?
-

We threw it out when we threw out signing prospects in FA. There was never signing bonuses for players other than prospect-eligibles.
-
Again, there's no contract minimum for FA signings, only a maximum. For example, a $15m winning bid can be broken down as follows:
1 year @ $15m
2 years @ $7.5m
3 years @ $5m
4 years @ $3.8m
This player isn't eligible for a 5 year contract since the value would be $3m and the maximum length of a $3m deal is 4 years.
-
yeah, i was just assuming we could do signing bonuses for any players just that they had never been used. ahhh well, I will re-group on it. i was just going to use it to bulk this year with the higher cap and have a lower contract in the following years.
It is probably good not to allow the signing bonuses since it levels the playing field.

Yeah this was one approach I was going to take for some older guys that I didn't want to commit to for more than 2 years, but they were probably going to get paid enough to push them to a 3,4,5 year deal.
Fair enough though.

I'm thinking a couple weeks. This month is crazy for me so I'm not sure.

If you need any help league wise, just LMK :)

how much time i have to give to call up a player ?
do i just have to make a post in transaction ?

Just post in transactions then you can move them right into your lineup.

When is our transaction lock for new signings?

Free Agency closes at the start of our playoffs.

Can we still release/buyout players even though playoffs have started?
Will Buyout money back in our Salary Cap when the extension period opens?
Buffalo should have a couple of good draft players in the 1st round hey

Yes you can still release and buyout players right up until the end of the season and apply buyout money to this year's cap.

Rob,
Sorry for the confusion, but I always get confused about this every year, and don't want to mess it up...
Is there a signing period for our guy's contracts who are ending this year after the season? Or is there a date that we have to sign them by? Thanks

There is a long signing period that starts after our playoffs and ends after the NHL entry draft. During that time you can also trade expiring contracts.

Could you provide us with future deadlines

I don't have any firm dates. The extension period lasts from the end of our season until the end of June. That's a good 11 or 12 weeks to decide on your extensions and/or trade expiring contracts. After that we'll have a short period (couple weeks) to select draft keepers. After that we'll do the supplemental draft. Once that's done I'll open up Free Agency. I will let you know well in advance of all deadlines, I just don't have them written in stone.

Will the $ (released contracts through 2013-2014) available at the end of the playoffs so we could use it for extensions

After the playoffs we roll right over to 14/15. So all that 13/14 money will be off your books.

It'd be great if someone could confirm my understanding of how the supplement draft eligibility and salary rules apply to players who've been in an overseas league and have no prior NHL games ...
As I understand it ... *any* player with less than 40 regular season NHL games played and not already owned by someone in our league is eligible for the supplemental draft and is eligible for a P-n/a prospect contract, including someone like Jori Lehtera who St. Louis just signed as a C and who played in the KHL for four years. Is that correct?
Thanks,
-Dan
-
You got it man. Any player, be they draftees, foreign players, or minor leaguers who don't have 40gp in the NHL are eligible to be drafted. These players are not eligible to be signed via free agency so this the only opportunity you will have all year to add such a player.
-
One caveat is the player must be signed to an NHL team. If you find a breakout KHLer who hasn't been drafted or signed by an NHL team they aren't eligible for our supplemental.
-
Rob, just curious if you were planning on crossing out the names of the guys that were selected as keepers, and are picked in our draft in the "2014 NHL Draft Results" thread? I could probably help if you needed it and could give me access to the thread
-
Yea man I'll give you access tonight when I get home.

You are now a board moderator

Dammit. Sooo a lot of guys I was thinking of taking at 1-4 are now gone... Ehlers better be the real deal, haha.
-
Just want to confirm something I've gathered from looking at old posts ...
Free agency and the ability to release/buy-out players remain available from this point through the fantasy season, correct? (The fantasy regular season, at least.)
Thanks in advance.

Right. FA closes when the playoffs start and reopens after the supplemental. Release/Buyouts can be done anytime throughout the year.

(Let me preface this by saying that what Voynov did was disgusting. I won't even say what he "apparently" did, since it seems like there isn't much doubt about the basic facts. I definitely don't want to cause anyone any offense or cause anyone to think that, in asking how this could play out under the rules of our silly little game, I'm minimizing or trivializing what happened.)
I'm considering a flex waiver of Voynov. What I'd like to understand is ... if his real life Kings contract ends up being terminated (whether the Kings are able to do so unilaterally or there is a mutual agreement between the player and the Kings and the NHL/NHLPA doesn't stand in the way) will his fantasy contract remain on the books here in the game? -- i.e. the 50% of the contract that would remain against my cap if he clears wavers and sits in my minors or if he is claimed by another team and, if he was claimed, the 50% of the contract that the claiming team takes on. Basically, if the real life Kings are able to escape from their contractual commitment to Voynov does that transfer over to the fantasy game?
His current fantasy contract is D Vyacheslav Voynov, $2.7m (2018-2019).

Unfortunately, unless Voynov decides to retire, you're stuck with his cap hit. :(
-
Thanks. Follow-up question: let's say he goes through flex waivers and sits in my minors at 50% of the cap hit per the flex waiver rule ... at a future date, I could choose to "promote" him back to the NHL roster and, if I wanted, apply the contract buy out rules to finance a buy out, correct?

Absolutely. I traded for Budaj just to stash him in the minors under the flex rules (not unlike what the Winnipeg Jets did).

Yup. You can release then bid on him again the same day. Whatever works.
-
I know once the playoffs start you can no longer bid on a FA, but after the playoffs when are we allowed? Right after, or do we wait until like the draft to give you a break?
I forget.
-
If I remember correctly , we go to extensions. trades open up , rob rolls over the roster , then draft and then free agency opens up.
-

I forget.
Once our finals end the extension period begins. Trading opens at this point too. This lasts a couple months until the NHL playoffs end and the entry draft is complete. After that is keeper draft selections which lasts a couple weeks, then we do the supplemental. After that is complete FA opens up. September-ish if my memory serves.
-
Once our finals end the extension period begins.
Is a byproduct of this that mid-season extensions are any extensions that are done before the finals end (as opposed to before our regular season ends)? I'm referring to this statement in the rules: "***All extensions done during the season are effective immediately, meaning the first year of the contract is the current year. (added 1/23/12)"
-

Yes. If you make an extension during our Stanley Cup finals it is considered Mid-Season. Once our playoffs finish up we're in the offseason, even though the actual NHL playoffs will still be ongoing.

When is FA starting this year? Are we doing the draft first?

After the draft, once everyone cleans up rosters.

gotcha, thanks

What is the prophetical for my minor roster. I am currently at 17/12 on my roster. Is there a date I need to get it under, or just ASAP? Thanks

After the draft is cleanup time. I'll yell at you when the time comes. ;)

Personally I think that this clean up should be done before the draft in order to make sure that a team has already space in his minor roster for his projected draftees
For several teams clean-up will just mean move up all their extra prospects to the main NHL in order to keep them even though there will be a big possibility that they will never play a game during the season. By doing that we could already assume that their NHL team will not be very competitive and most of the time guarantee a place in the bottom of the league.
Before the draft we should only be allowed to move up a certain number of prospects and any extra over the 12 limit back to the pool draft to allow other GMs to have the chance to repick them
During the season do we have a minimum of real NHL players required in our main roster to guarantee a so call NHL team and not a Junior team in our NHL team?
I know that it is maybe too late for this year but if that topic was never discuss it should be this year if we want a competitive league and not an already guarantee standing at the beginning of the season. This way we will be forced to manage our Minor Farm as well as managing our NHL roster.
Maybe we should have a rule that say that any (p/n-a) with no game before the NHL star game should be back in the Minor Farm and any extra player in the Farm after the move back to the FA for next year.
Maybe this should be a new topic to discuss in a separate thread?

Probably should be a separate thread and I definitely agree that the thing I hate the most in any league is tanking. Just not sure this is the way to handle it as you dont want to start penalizing teams that are already in the dumps as it is.
-
It is a conversation worthy of a separate thread. Though I don't like the idea of making it harder to rebuild. A cap floor is another potential solution.

Cap floor wont work as nothing prevents someone from signing a player for 1 yr at 15 million to reach their cap floor.

Agree
I have reposted my initial comment in a separate thread. Maybe we could continue the discussion there

I think we should always try to be like real life so a real team would not be allowed to not put a complete line up on the ice so we should not allow it here

The Buffalo Sabres had a real team on the ice last year? Could have fooled me!

I'm sure some of the concern with this issue is my team. I want to make everyone aware that I will be fielding a full team this year. Currently I have 12 NHL spots to fill. 5 will be minor leaguers being called up, and the rest will be FA signings.
I believe that Rob has all the faith in me as an owner to at least field a full starting roster.
An owner has to have the right to rebuild. I think Rob and many other owners will agree that I came in with a terrible team. I think my best player was someone like Brad Marchand and it wasn't even close. I traded away the future to make a run last year and didn't really get close, so its time to rebuild.
I think the league is too wrapped up in looking at rosters right now. I, for one, absolutely hate when owners don't field a full starting roster, but who is to say at this point in the season that an owner is going to do that.
Just my two cents and some insight on my "rebuild".
-
What's the rule on players jumping to different countries? Do they count as retired or am I just stuck with them?
-
It depends on the player
Retired Players
All contracts for players who retire from the NHL are considered null and void.
If an NHL player leaves to play overseas in another league, his contract remains in force unless the player is 35 or older and is gone for at least one NHL season.
-
Sometimes a player might retire from the nhl to play in another league (Kovalchuk). That contract would be null.

Rosters lock when the playoffs begin. That's the deadline for buyouts where money is paid this year.

Our playoffs start March 7th I believe and that is when rosters lock. If an NHL player gets to 40 games on March 6th or just someone starts a bid that night, is that player eligible for the playoffs or are they locked out?

That player would be eligible. As long as bidding starts before the deadline
------------------------------------------------
That player would need to reach the 40gp before the bid is started though , If I understand it correctly.

Domingue won't be able to help any playoff teams this year! It would have been fun to see the bidding if he did hit 40 gp before Sunday night...

I assume we don't have the amazing rule the NHL does where you can bring a guy off of IR in the playoffs with no cap hit. Can I drop people to get O'Reilly off of IR? He came back 2 weeks early from a his bum foot.

No, we don't have that rule. But yes, you can make drops to maneuver cap space for O'Reilly's return.
-
Are we still able to buy-out/release players to clear a roster spot, to get access to someone in the minors? Kind of like Carolina was able to do to activate O'Reilly from IR?

Good to know.
Is this available only while we're actively in playoffs, or can anyone still buy-out/release players until the end of playoffs?
Just curious if I have to make a move by tomorrow (Sunday) since I don't know if I'll beat St.Louis

Sorry I didn't answer this in time, but you are allowed to make changes to this years roster while the 15/16 calendar is still active whether you're in the playoffs or not.

Yes, you can extend at any time. However if you're extending while the player is still under contract, the new contract cannot be shorter or less money than the existing contract.

Well, you could extend that contract, but you wouldn't be eligible for the prospect discount unless you wait until it expires.

Something to think about for the summer/next year (or even this year if it's a simple fix):
Mostly for Rob,
Is there an easy way to show on our rosters what our next year's cap situation looks like?
I'm not sure how the spreadsheet you use is laid out, but another line under the Team Budget header that says next year's cap position would be helpful.
Example:
Team Budget for the 2016-2017 Season
Salary: $73.7m
Under cap by $5.59999999999999m
Next Year: Under cap by $X.XXXXXXXm
or:
Team Budget for the 2016-2017 Season
Salary: $73.7m
Under cap by $5.59999999999999m
Next year salary: $63.7m
Under cap by $15.599999999999m
If it is a ton of extra work, don't worry about it.
It would just be good to know where we stand for extensions and that kind of thing on quick glance.
Thanks
PS - Why in the world is the number $5.99999999m and not $6.0m flat? As far as I've been in the league, we have never had something like $2.01m or $2.59m contracts, they've all been to the nearest $0.1m.

It's something messed up with the spreadsheet formula. I had the same problem when I was using spreadsheets for my leagues.
-
When I started the league I was provided with a handy dandy spreadsheet by the ProFSL staff, back when the staff was active and engaged and eager to grow the website. This spreadsheet is wonderfully formatted with equations that make my life super easy. I'm fluent at using the spreadsheet, but the actual programming behind it is beyond my expertise. Adding some data about future cap would be a nice feature, but I have no idea how to do it.
About that 5.999999m crap - some kind of spreadsheet equation anomaly. I think Anthony and I used the same sheet.

Give it to Gypsie to figure out that guy gets wood doing things with numbers and percentages.

If someone knows what they're doing, please be my guest. I am attaching my spreadsheet here. Though, if you're not going to do it immediately, then just let me know when you're ready and I'll send the most up to date sheet. I don't want someone to update this and send it to me a month from now, forcing me to update a months worth of transactions twice.

I added a rounding formula to the nearest tenth in Column M on the Roster Tab. That fixed the issue of the cap space showing up to so many decimal points.
I added in a projection for next years cap space that will show up just below the current information shown for 2016-2017 on the team rosters. A couple of things on this number is that I couldn't get Cash Exchanges to be included for future years. This was due to how these are entered into the spreadsheet. Also if you have a player on LTIR this year his cap hit wouldn't be included in future years since his salary for this year is set to 0.
Take a look at it Rob and let me know what you think. I can always modify it if you don't like the looks of it. We could fix it to include the future cash in the projection but that would require us to add a column to the contracts tab and you would have to put the future value of the cash exchange in that column.

Wow, you really are the greatest human being.... Here's what it looks like for everyone else.

I wouldn't mind adding a column for cash exchanges if it's not too much work. I'm not a big fan of how I'm recording those now. Let me know if you want to do it, and how I need to enter them going forward.

I added a column J to the Contracts tab. If a cash exchange is for a future year you just need to put the value of the cash exchange for the future year in that column. A pretty minor change to the spreadsheet. If you want we could probably make some more updates to the sheet in the offseason.

Wow... You guys are so much smarter than me, haha.
I'm definitely not an office/spreadsheet guy! I dabble with Excel here and there but that's about where it ends. I still don't know formulas that well...

I went and updated all rosters. So happy to get rid of that 0.99999 crap!
And yes, other updates would be most welcome. Let's talk in the offseason.

Last day of the playoffs.

Last day of the playoffs.
Nhls? or dnhls?

If we wanted to add a balance measure we could make that deadline the end of our regular season - that way playoff teams would not be able to shed contracts after they're eliminated. Only non-playoff teams would be able to finagle cap at the end of the season.

Excited to be here, hopefully I'll be a contender eventually.. the two questions I have off the bat: when people are looking to move RFAs, is there a quick way to see what it'll cost you to re-sign them? And, how do you guys view balancing current talent against young prospects? Obviously prospects are huge, just trying to gauge how much to rely on them vs a couple high end current guys mixed with the "lower end" NHL guys.

When people have RFA's on their block, most of the time they have already calculated their extension cost. Sometimes they will post the extension cost in the trade block, but if not, it never hurts to ask if they know the cost. But if you want to figure it out on your own, you have to head to Fantrax > Players. Sort by position, selecting ALL players and update the results per page to 250 or so - and then find the player you're looking for (ctrl+f) to see what their rank is. You'll need to find their rank for this year AND last year. Whatever rank is higher is the one that counts. Then look at the Contracts/Extensions thread in the rules, scroll down to that rank and that's the extension price.
It sounds like a pain in the a$$ - and it is - especially for me when I have to check every single extension for every single team! heh. But it's second nature after a while.
Regarding strategy with high end talent vs prospects; I'm interested to hear some other opinions, but my take is that balance is best. I haven't always followed this advice (I kinda play an all or nothing style most years), but the most consistently successful teams are very balanced. In your case, you have to consider how long it's going to take you to become competitive. Obviously guys like Marleau and Ryan Miller can't help you if you can't compete very soon, so they are obvious targets to unload. Our Vancouver GM, Capn_Cally, inherited a team similar to yours. He unloaded just about every player over the age of 25 and gained a ton of young prospects and draft picks. Then once he established 1 or 2 consistent FP producers at each position, he unloaded all of those assets for high end talent. He had a few mid-range prospects that exploded, and now he's got the best roster here outside of St Louis.
Keep in mind this is a depth league. If you load up on expensive high end players, you generally won't be able to afford solid depth. Philly is a good example of this. (sorry papps!)
Like I said before, take your time. This extension period goes until the end of June. Check out some of the most successful teams (this thread has alltime DNHL ranks: http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?topic=88465.0) and you'll see what kind of balance these teams strike to get a good example. Although Anaheim is in cap hell right now - he's paying for his consecutive championships...

Just to confirm before I select my keepers - we will be increasing the minors size to 15 for this season?

Yes. I forgot to update the sheet. I'll do that.

I should know this, but how is the draft order set for playoff teams? Lowest points in one round gets the highest pick of the teams that lost in the same round?

It goes by the standings going into that round. So there's no re-seeding of eliminated teams, so to speak. Here's the standings so you can see where you stand. I will post the full draft order this week.

Some questions, is it possible to view the league on Fantrax?
-
All contracts for players 35+ years old who leave the NHL to play overseas in another league are considered null and void.
does this mean if someone signs Kovalchuk they can just null and void his contract if they decided things arent going to work out???
-

Good question. The rule doesn't address that situation. Though I guess the language could be interpreted literally to mean the player has to LEAVE. Since the contract was signed while the player wasn't in the NHL, he doesn't qualify for a null contract per this rule.
But I dunno, gotta think about that.
-
Kovalchuk isn't 35 though, another wrinkle. Though by the time this issue presents itself he may be 35.
-
I guess this is a question for when the season "starts". I see Vancouver is putting Shaw on IR. Now in all likelihood he will be ready for opening day, lets say he is, does Cally have to take Shaw off of IR since that is the start of the new season, or can he leave him on all year?
I'm not picking on Cally I was going to ask this because James Neal and Andrew Hammond can both be put on IR via Fantrax for my team.

The only time a player would be forced OFF of IR is at season end (spreadsheet rollover time). So in this case Cally would be able to hide Shaw's paycheck for the year if he wanted to.

Question about DNHL rounding on contract calculations. Standard rounding (.5 and above round up ie. 4.2 = 4), any fraction round up (ie. 4.2 = 5) or just drop the fraction all-together ( 4.6 = 4)? It's confusing as f**ck in Backyard as there's a couple different approaches depending on the type of contract.

Don't we round to the nearest 0.1 in here.... Not sure what's confusing about BY, never been there.
But if it's like 1.667, it would be $1.7m
If it's 1.343, it would just be $1.3m
Not sure if that answered what you're looking for... Probably not though, as the above logic seems pretty straight forward and maybe it's a more complex issue you're looking at Slack?

Standard rounding then, thanks! In Backyard they round up for any fractions on free-agent contracts (1.343 = 1.4) but normally for extension discounts. Gets me every time.

Standard rounding... As in the right way to round decimals as far back as I can remember I leaned in elementary school?
As far as I remember, 1.11 and 1.19 are pretty different and shouldn’t both round to 1.2 haha.
I can see how any other way to do it would be super confusing!
-
Yes standard for sure.
In many leagues everything is rounded up, never down. Not here, we round down too!

Just curious what the settings are on Fantrax for setting lines.
I'm assuming that once the first game of the day is played, no more roster changes can be made?
I went to throw in Kinkaid for Schneider at 6:54pm EST, but the rosters were locked. Game time starts at 7pm EST.
Not a big deal, my dumb mistake for not looking sooner (work) but just wanted to see what the settings are.
I know on Yahoo I can change players right up until 6:59pm, or 9:59pm if it's a West coast came.
I hope to hell the Kinkaid non-start tonight isn't the deciding factor. Unlikely the way my skaters have been laying eggs so far

Minor League Roster Eligibility
A player must have less than 40 NHL games played to be eligible for the minor league roster. Any eligible player may be placed in the minors at any time. If a player in the minors goes over the limit he may remain in the minors until you decide to call them up.
If a team acquires a player with 40 or more games, is he eligible for the minors?

Is the salary cap enforced during the entirety of the DNHL offseason, or is the cap not enforced for a period of time during the offseason and temporary overages can be resolved through trades, releases, etc. before the cap is enforced again?
If the cap does apply during the offseason extension & trading period that begins immediately after the DNHL season ends, for example, and therefore you have to have sufficient cap space for any extension made or salary added through a trade during that period, then I assume it's the approaching season's cap that applies because the year rolls over when the DHNL season ends, correct?
Thanks.

I am imagining trade scenarios that on their own could be fair if passed independently by the trade committee, but that taken together amount to a kind of circumvention of the rules.
Trade #1 from Team A to B
Big money Player
For
This and that
Trade #2 from Team A to B
This and that Plus
For
Big money player and Cash
So the net effect is a trade of "Plus" for Cash...
If the trades are fair individually is there a problem with the whole? I'm writing this with our approach to tanking in mind where it seems that the letter of the law is what matters most. In other words there is no problem until there is a problem.

I think it's just something the TC would have to digest. It's not really something I'd want to make rules around. I know that I would veto trade #2 if it came up.

I feel like this came up a couple of years ago, but I'm not finding the answer ...
If you flex waiver a player and that player is claimed by another team, so you're left with 50% of the contract, can that "half-contract" be bought out using the usual contract buyout rules?
-

No, it's dead money at that point. Only active player contracts can be bought out at the discounted rate.
-
No, it's dead money at that point. Only active player contracts can be bought out at the discounted rate.
If that happens can a team accelerate the payment of the dead money? If there was 3 years remaining would they be able to pay it all of this year and remove the future cap hits assuming no discount was applied?

Yup - it would work the same as a bought out contract, where funds can be re-allocated at any time.

trying to project some extensions and have a couple questions. 1) How are we rounding? ie. if a players PPG*$25k = say $3.85m...are we dropping the $50k or rounding up? Also for this coming extension period will we be using PPG with blocked shots included?

-That would round up to $3.9m.
-Yes, BS will be included in the extension numbers. We're usually able to launch the league for the following season right away - so we'll have the stat included once that's up.

can I pay all of a guys money that I have previously bought out in the current year? like X-C Victor Rask, Waived contract through 21/22, $1.6m this year can I pay the 3.2M I owe for the last 2 years now?
-
Yes
***A GM may at any time decide to re-allocate funds to a buyout. For instance, if LA is to buyout Doughty over 3 years, but in year 2 he realizes he has funds to spare, he may use funds in the 2nd year to pay off some or all of what he owes in the 3rd year in order to clear up future cap space.

How do we calculate Extension in DNHL? Looked thru the rules pages and nothing where I think it should be "Contracts & Extensions". Thanks guys.
Easy answer: Total fanpts x by 30,000 2019-20 season / 25,000 2018-19 season and whatever is more is the extension value
Extensions
Contract extensions may be offered during the offseason "Extension Period" which is normally a 3 month period from when the NHL regular season ends in April until the entry draft is complete in June. The exact time-frame will be announced annually. Extension values are determined by looking up the player's fantasy points in both the current season and the prior season. The higher of these two values is multiplied by a static factor of $25K. The result is the players' extension value. Contract length follows the minimum/maximum rules stated above.
The minimum contract extension is $800k - any player that falls under that value must be extended at $800k.
** Contracts are rounded up or down to the nearest 100k ***
** Due to the Covid shortened season , 19/20 season is multiplied by 30k ****
-
I do see that the extension period ends before the draft. I was under the impression that was just for our free agents and we could offer extensions to players under contract all off-season. At least that is kind of how I remember discussions going about switching to this new extension value system. If that isn't the case why can't it be? Especially after free agency when folks know what their cap is it could be helpful to lock up their other players.
-

With the new extension rules we didn't want in-season extensions with partial point totals for the year. I don't recall how we established the deadline - but probably I think we just used the previous post-season extension period as our new extension period arbitrarily, since we had that time period established already. You are correct that there's really no issue with extensions right up until the season starts. I'll throw up a post for discussion and maybe we can make a quick change.

They can stay on a minor league roster as long as the team wants to keep them there.
Once called up to the NHL Roster, they can't be sent back down.
-

After the year they hit 40 GP their prospect clock starts. The contract converts from P-n/a to a P contract with an expiration year 2 years after the year they hit 40GP. So, if you have a prospect that hits 40 this season, his contract would change from P-n/a to P-22/23. After the 22/23 season you would either extend him with a prospect discount or as a normal extension.

To be more accurate with Fantrax since that is our roster keeper. The after 40 games played players contract should show as "2nd"

Yes, good call. On Fantrax you'll see them as:
1st = P-n/a
2nd = P-21/22
3rd = P-20/21

So on fantrax I get 3 roster alerts on my team page for having players in my minors that aren't elligible (thomas, Batherson and Jokiharju). Now if I don't call them up am I going to have issues with my roster when the games start to be played? I know our league rules say they can stay down but just wondering if fantrax won't like that with how the league is setup On there now.

I know our league rules say they can stay down but just wondering if fantrax won't like that with how the league is setup On there now.
I have Minor League enforcement set to NONE
None
The system will not enforce any minor league restriction, meaning that players who are no longer minor leaguers can be kept in the Minors roster slot for as long as the owner wants. Violations however will still be shown in the Team --> Roster Violations screen, which is also displayed for all other options.

Fantrax should allow a move to the IR for any player that Fantrax has marked as injured, right?
It won't let me move Seguin to the IR and I can't figure out why not. He's marked as injured and I have one available IR slot, but that slot is not highlighted as an option when I select Seguin for a roster move.
Or is that an admin-only function?

I moved Seguin for you - but I'm not sure why you can't. Perhaps it's because the team is not utilizing its IR during the offseason. Eligibility is determined by Fantrax by whether the team assigns the player to IR. Would there be no reason to do that officially in the offseason?
Snug - can you shed any light on this?
-
Fantrax is setup to only allow a player to be move to IR if their NHL team designates them to IR. It can be changed but it opens up to abuse of the IR slots.
As Rob noted , players can be manually moved by a commissioner.

Should we update the rules to accommodate offseason IR moves like this?

Whatever works for the admins.
I'd be OK with posts to the ProFSL transactions board with a link to a news report on an extended injury, but that might be needless hassle for the admins.

Not unlike what we've always done, though. We could just reinstate the old LTIR rules in the offseason only.

With being able to do our moves on Fantrax do we need to bid to find an IR replacement or we could pick him directly from FA. If not maybe it should because when we have an IR we want to replace him as quickly as possible especially with a 56 games season. We do not really have time to wait to go trough the 2-3 days or more FA process to replace him

If you are concerned that you are losing games disproportionately consider Arizona's plight not having a first round draft pick for 2 years running. It's the same not-so-level playing field for everyone. Waiting a few days for a fair IR replacement bid to be resolved is NOT a big deal.

Yes. Same FA bidding rules as always.

Moral of this story - Don't trade your 1st picks

He was saying that the real life Arizona franchise in the NHL lost there 1st round draft picks for two years. So he doesn't get a first round keeper player. Nothing he did to lose them.

I can't feel bad for anyone here with what Boston has done with their draft picks the past decade...

Is there any way to get the standings from last season? Just trying to get a better idea of where my team is at compared to the rest of the league, will give me a better idea for contacts, trade block in what direction I want to go. Don't need anything super detailed just rankings and maybe overall points.
Also do I have to keep the team in LA, or am I able to change to another open team?
For the keepers, is that basically just I have first dibs on any available players from that club? So players that will be drafted in July, and then any other players not currently with a contract?
Thanks!

I added you to the 20/21 league so that you can view last year's info. Just go to "All current/past leagues" and you should see it there.
As a new GM you get 1 relocation. Your Jets aren't available, but if you prefer another available city just let me know.
For Keepers you'll get to select up to 3 players that the King's select this draft. Then we have a supplemental draft to select all other entry draftees + any unclaimed minors eligible players (less than 40 NHL games played).
If you relocate you'll still keep King's players this year, then starting next year you can keep players drafted by your new team. This is too avoid GMs selecting a team just cause it has better draft position.

If I could switch to the new jersey devils that would be great. They were my pre-jets team so I still follow them a bit more than most other teams.
Thanks!

Sounds good. I'll get everything updated this week.

Hi, are there any options to remove a player and his contract if he has retired? I am looking at Rask and seeing if I have any options - thanks!

Yes, retired players contracts are null and void. Just post a transaction.

On Fantrax 22-23 contracts and 23-24 contracts both expire in 23. Something to do with a Fantrax roll-over date?

Do you have an example? Players showing a 22 , are considered an expiring on contract.
Players that are 23/24 , should show 23 on fantrax.
edit - i looked through my own team and a few on yours and all seems to check out the way it should. Let me know if there is a specific player that you were looking at.

Thanks for sorting me out. Looks like D Rasmus Andersson, $2.4m (2024-2025) should show 24

@SlackJack
It looks like he should actually be 25/26 - let me know if my math is right - see the original extension here:

Does a player on LTIR need to be activated in order to be traded, or can he be traded directly from LTIR?
For example, if I have Joe Blow and his $5m salary on LTIR and off the books, and I only have $3m of free cap space, would I first have to clear another $2m in order to activate him so I can trade him, and or can I just trade him directly from LTIR?

You can trade him right from LTIR. No need to maneuver cap space for that. Also, traditionally we've always let the receiving team inherit the player in LTIR status. Though, now that we're more Fantrax automated, we might get barked at if the receiving team doesn't have the cap space.

Just wanted to confirm that the keeper rule/custom surrounding franchise moves is still in effect and I'd select Minnesota keepers this offseason and would begin selecting L.A. keepers next offseason. Thanks.

Inquiry about salaries and Cap considerations for increasing to keep up with NHL
Salary Cap Static since 2021?
NHL current cap is 82.5 for 24 players
Our cap is 95 for 30 players
Equivalent cap would be 103m (3.4375 per roster slot)
How is cap determined?
Seems top players in our league getting very expensive
A lot of current bottom six players in NHL taking minimum inconsistent with our salary structure
I do not have any ideas / suggestions - just questions

its fixed because its 25k x fantasy points for the player so there is no real need to change the cap every time the NHL changes theirs. when it was changed to this method we calculated what our cap should be based on our roster sizes and number of teams in the league. the 2 years where there was less games played because of covid we made and adjustment in the 25k to compensate for the short seasons. if anyone thinks that the calculating numbers need to be adjusted they can always start that discussion. also 1 of the results people wanted was to increase the number of players available in FA

Where do we find flex-waivers again? I can never find them.

Flex waivers were a casualty of converting contracts to Fantrax. They were too much of a pain in the rear to administer.

Hey so the rules state we round extention values up or down to the nearest $100k. Any changes on this that I'm not aware of? (Morrissey caught my eye)

Stopped rounding when we let Fantrax take the wheel on contracts and instated the $25k/pt rule. Since we have unrounded drops. Seemed to make sense.

So...we'll be stuck with up to $75k dead cap now assuming it doesn't also make sense to have fractional contract bids in free-agency.

I guess my question would be is this an official rule change?
