Title: BUF and SJ confirm trade
Post by: Rock On on April 26, 2019, 08:30:53 PM
San Jose Sharks are making a slash this off-season. We've added veteran goalie Price to our roster along with overpaid and underperforming sidekick Niemi. We move a stash of prospects with some good upside to get the deal done.

Trade to SJ
Carey Price, $10.4m (2016-2021)
Antti Niemi, $5.5m (2018-2022)

Trade to BUF
Brian Elliott, $6.0m (2018-2022)
G - Garret Sparks (SDP 2018: 2011 7/190 - 24 Games)  GP updated Dec13/18
G - Andrew Shortridge (SDP 2019: UNDRAFTED - 0 Games)
G - Kevin Boyle (SDP 2019: UNDRAFTED - 5 Games)
C - Jonathan Ang (2016: 4/94 - 0 Games)
SDP Round 1 - 2020

TheBeef to confirm.

:BUF-NHL: Buffalo agrees to this trade. We are moving two older goaltenders for future starters. We're investing in the future and like the return. Ultimately, we were not impressed with the Montreal tandem during the time we owned them. GL to SJ.

:iatp: TheBeef must be really down on Montreal to move Price for prospects and a vet 1B like Elliott. But who am I to judge after the season I had.

The risk of FNHL Buffalo trading Carey Price towards the tail end of his prime is high as he can still perform at a high level. But then you can factor in the performance of his NHL team and the risk that Price might start showing a sharp decline as many players his age do and this could be a win longterm for Buffalo while a clear victory for San Jose today.

:iatp: 4 goalies (possibly a 5th if the Supplemental pick turning a goalie pick) with no guarantee of a starter for a soon to be 32yo Carey Price and a fairly washed up Niemi. It's a definite win now for SJ and a potentially bigger win for BUF in a couple of yrs.

I like this trade for SJ. Yes, they gave up futures, but even on a mediocre Canadiens team, Price should continue to be a top 5-10 FHNL'er for a few years. I can't remember how far out of the top 3 in the Pacific they finished last year, but this should ruffle a few feathers out west.

Niemi has signed with KHL Jokerit for 2019-20. Sharks can use a non-NHL Buy-Out.

Nooooooooo! I thought Niemi had another yr of NHL backup in him. Can I use the off-season 10% cap overage to buy Niemi out? I think my Sharks are over the cap limit with Price and Niemi coming over.

You cannot use the overage for BOs. I asked. Montreal has an offer for you.
