Habs make a few moves to clean the roster.

Dennis Wideman, $2.1m (2017-2020) retired and is now coaching Junior hockey in the CHL. We'll take the whole cap hit this yr. Should've known to avoid an ex-Bruin.

Mark Streit, $2.0m (2017-2020) retired after he refused demotion to the AHL. Again we'll take the whole cap hit this yr.

I call this the "Trading for the Other Guy's Crap" deal.
Willing to roll the dice on Niemi. He either resurfaces later this year or he signs with a KHL team down the line. I want to unload my $9 million dollars worth of crap contracts.

I love trades where teams deal for junk they hate LESS.

We didn't want to wait for Niemi to turn it around or sign with a KHL/SHL/DEL team so moved him in exchange for a bag of pucks and a water bottle. Wideman, Bogosian and Hjalmarsson are the pucks (read dead weight). DeSmith is the water bottle, handy to have around. We also like the smaller cap hits that we can buy out or deal for other people's junk we might like more. Good to get this done. Thanks for the talks Beef!
