Title: Oriole / Padres TRADE 1/12/22 8:33 pm ET
Post by: dennymcc23 on January 12, 2022, 08:47:42 PM
Baltimore Orioles propose a trade. Normar Mazara ($4m, 2024), Mychal Givens ($3m,2022)
Parker Meadows (spec), Ismael Mena (spec) to San Diego Padres for Michell Tolman (spec).

Orioles will verify transaction.

Orioles trade:
OF Mazara, Nomar, $4m (2024)
RP Givens, Mychal, $3m (2022)
OF Meadows, Parker, $0.5m (P-n/a)
OF Mena, Ismael, $0.5m (P-n/a)

Padres trade:
CI Tolman, Mitchell, $0.5m (P-n/a)

Note: Padres need to post a rationale for trade, just modify and replace this note.

Orioles confirm and will immediately drop Tolman.

Basically I move some of my lesser prospects to clear a little cap space. I don't think Mazara will be a full-time player again to justify his salary and think I can mostly replace Givens' production cheaper in free agency or with my other relievers.

This trade is obviously a salary dump by the Orioles.  I have seen multiple trades in FGM where teams agree to salary dump trades, but it usually is characterized by some assets attached to the unwanted contracts.  But in this trade, I don?t see what the Padres get for taking on two contracts totaling $7.0m.  That?s why I wanted to see the Padres rationale for agreeing to this trade.  Then I could at least look for some way to support it.

This is not a question of letting a GM run his own team.  That justification is an excuse some rely on when there is no sound reason for one team agreeing to this type of trade.  But let?s look at what the Padres get:

1) An MLB bust in Mazara with a $4.0m (2024) contract.  He?s been released multiple times and is now only organizational depth;

2) An overpriced RP in Givens, who is on an expiring contract, but the Padres could certainly sign a comparable RP in free agency for less money;

3) An underachieving high pick in Meadows who is mired in Class A ball.  He has not developed that upside the Tigers thought he had and has slipped down the prospect rankings every year;

4) Finally, an international prospect who is raw and so far has done little to even warrant a fantasy roster spot in in Means.  He is a light hitting OF with a lot of holes in his game and is barely surviving in low Rookie League level.

I know I am going to leave the league at the end of the season and won?t be around to eat crow if Meadows and Means actually develop into MLB level players, but right now, on its merits, this is a bad trade.

This is tough call because of its a salary dump. No one knows for sure if the prospects he is giving up are going to develop or not. I gotta agree with flash on this im ok with dumping bad contracts just send some value spec wise and ill revote on trade.

Veto

It's hard to judge a trade with just one justification so based on what we have I have to veto. Pure salary dump with :SD: getting no meaningful assets in return
