Minor League Rosters

This has come up in a few different threads.  I think most of you know the debate.  Let's just put it to a vote.

When would this be implemented if it passes? I'm assuming it wouldn't take effect until next offseason?

Normally with changes like this I like to wait a year.  Though I don't really see the harm in implementing this earlier.  That way teams can fill their minors this offseason.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I'm worried about what it's going to do to the quality of the supplemental draft pool.  If we implement this immediately, we should start to see if there's an effect in the 18/19 draft.

This ought to be clear since you're all making roster decisions now.  I'm making the call that this change, if approved, will be effective IMMEDIATELY.

So if you're considering cutting players now to make room for draftees this summer, please wait until the vote is complete.  It appears likely that you'll have 3 more roster spots to play with.

Before voting I tried to go back and look at transactions to see if anyone dropped any players that could've then been drafted in the supplemental round and found the Avs dropped Mark Stone, I dropped Victor Rask, Bruins dropped Spooner, the Red Wings dropped Athanasiou and Larkin.  That is about it for notable players.  I can't speak to why the other players were dropped but I dropped Rask because I thought he sucked not because of a roster crunch.  But, 4+ players in what will be our 6th draft doesn't seem like a biggie, and really only Stone and Larkin are good players. Hopefully that alleviates your worries.

I don't think it will harm future drafts all that much.

I say this because each year obviously there is a new crop of rookie draftees from the NHL, but also each year we know more about players who were passed over from last year's draft.
For example, this year, some of us will probably dip into the players from the 2016, 2015 and maybe even the 2014 draft clBooYah!  were maybe 3rd or 4th rounders, but have had solid years in their last Junior season or 2nd or 3rd NCAA season.
I mean, last year I landed Kevin Labanc and I only knew about him because he led the OHL in scoring. He was a 6th round pick in 2014. I'm pretty sure he was on exactly zero people's supp-draft radar up until about April/May of last year.

Add to that the growing amount of NHL teams signing un-drafted NCAA free agents, and there is plenty of pretty good talent to be drafted each year for our supp draft.
Oh, and the fact we get 3 keeper players each year from our own team as well.

I still think some teams will have to drop players if they accumulate several draft picks in a year. If a team has say, 5-6 draft picks from trades (their 3 plus 2-3 more acquired ones), that gives them 9 prospects to house in their minors that year. I don't see more than 2 of those 9 playing in the NHL the following year, so those 7+ others will still all be there the following season, with an additional 6 or so incoming prospects.

That's my thoughts anyways. I think 15 is the max though - been in leagues with 20 spots and that was definitely way too many. Zero tough decisions had to be made with that many spots to stash players.

I think it makes sense to have the larger minor league only because we no longer allow signing players to the minor leagues.  If we still allowed that I would have said 10 max. but given the number of players added through the NHL draft each year and that you cant just go out and sign a guy anytime,  I think it makes sense.

  • dbreer23: Agreed. I think the Devers deal in FGM is a good example of that. Devers gives SD some now (and future) pop, giving up substantial pieces to get him (Mayo, Keith, and one other).

  • Jwalkerjr88: @idsjayhawk i understand that. To be clear, i wasnt judging anyone. I just know in NFL Live, you cant just draft 1-7 rds every year and sign a few FAs and be the champion. It wont happen

  • Brent: Agreed.  I have Amon Ra St. Brown and Aiyuk because I traded JJ.  I couldn't have acquired a player like ASB where I was picking in the 1st so I down tiered at WR to make a trio of Chase, ASB and Aiyuk instead of JJ, Chase and fill in the blank.
  • ldsjayhawk: That is probably even more true in baseball since your drafts don't payoff for 5 years or so.  And I will admit my conservatism may be the reason I only have one championship here at ProFSL

  • Brent: Yeah, it does help to have a big draft class and available cap.
  • Brent: I'm contemplating doing a complete tear down in NFL Live and rebuild.  Honestly, I probably should have postered for it to be this season.  I still might, but I would legit need to go into the draft with 3-4 top 10 picks/+ many others.
  • Brent: postured
  • Jwalkerjr88: Yea nailing drafts and some key FAs helps too. But if you remember BAB you traded alvin kamara for the rams 1-7 draft picks. So the extra picks helped you nail the 2023 draft the way you did
    Yesterday at 03:13:02 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: Its the combination of all three that is required is what im saying
    Yesterday at 03:13:31 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: And brent a tear down with you assets would look interesting. Personally i just think you need break one big asset down into 3 good ones and move carr and go from there. But you have an A1 nfl mind so im sure you will nail whatever it is you decide

  • BayAreaBallers: very good pt yes i did gain lot of capital which propelled me to make more moves from that trade
    Yesterday at 03:34:25 PM
  • Brent: Thank you.  Yes, I agree.  I do need to break one asset down to 3.  I did that with JJ, went from S tier to 2 A tiers.  Now I need to potentially go from an A tier to 3 Bs or something like that.  I've had some inquiries on Carr, but nothing worth moving him.
