I'm in favor of doing away with both of these aspects of this league and it appears that I'm getting growing support.
We did away with both a few years back in FGM- Neither are done in real life MLB
Let's discuss it for 1 week then take a vote.
Thanks,
Rick

I can't remember any MLB fantasy league that allowed trading of draft picks.

The MLB allows Compensatory Picks (that a team gains from losing a free agent), but Regular Picks cannot be traded.  Why is that?  Well, I would point to a quote from an article I read on ESPN:

"Teams could be stupid and trade away all their picks. Yeah, we have to protect ourselves," one club executive said with an embarrassed laugh. "Is it really good to set up a system in baseball that rewards intelligence?"

One of the problems we encounter as fantasy baseball GMs is that we run across individuals who mortgage the future and then leave when it becomes apparent their team no longer has any assets.  All of us trade away players whom we don't believe in or trade for players we have high hopes for.  Sometimes we see the players we trade away blossom and players we get turn into busts.

The draft is intended to help us gain future assets, but if we trade them all away, we have nothing to fall back on for the future.  Of course, we could make bad choices and draft players who don't evolve into MLB players,
but at least we have the opportunity to make those choices every year if we prohibit the trading of draft picks.

I do not believe we should be allowed to trade picks.  It will not interfere with the trading process.  It helps insure that a given team at least has the opportunity to gain some assets to be competitive in the future.  In this particular league, with a total roster of 50 (30 MLB & 20 MiLB), there is no place to "stash players".  With a three round FYPD, everyone has a chance to get some decent players without giving up picks.

Given our general makeup as a league, we will no longer trade draft picks.

  • dbreer23: Take two to tango, though. Most owners with adequate or surplus SP aren't interested in prospects as they're trying to win now.

  • Daddy: Also agreed. Top quality pitching probably means not much depth. A few injuries can challenge you. Pitching other than top end pitching has been devalued in fantasy. Everyone wants the stud.

  • Daddy: I here to tell you that ALL major league pitching is good pitching. A great hitter beats a terrible pitcher just 3 out of 10 times. Which means the worst pitchers > the greatest hitters.

  • Brent: Greg Maddux had the best outlook.  He viewed himself as tye dealer/house and you had to beat him.  Just like in the casino, the house nearly always wins.

  • Brent: He had that view b/c of his father who was a blackjack dealer in Vegas.
  • Daddy: Yes @Brent!! That is it exactly. Pitching is the house & it always wins in the end.

  • Braves155: The problem with the minors is not the system as a whole, it is some Farm Systems are more 'elite' at being able to produce talent than others. If you look across MLB teams you can pretty easily tell the great systems from the weaker systems and talent development
    Yesterday at 05:57:14 PM
  • Braves155: With regard to pitching in the Minors...there is  method to the madness. It is all about what you make of it tho. I agree that it can seem certain type arms in the minors are a dime a dozen
    Yesterday at 06:02:39 PM
  • Daddy: Mr Braves you are my guy. There isnt anything wrong with minor league studs or flops. I get it in REAL baseball.
  • Daddy: This is fantasy baseball. We dont generate revenue selling prospects and merchandising. Our top farms dont get a write up in Sports Illustrated.
  • Daddy: Load up on MLB guys, then near MLB guys, and only then is the quality of your prospects matter. Ya dig ;)
