For the Angels, this deal is about freeing up $10M a year for the next 3 years to help with extending our core players.  As a Rays fan, I hope Longo gets back to his 30+ HR days, as he's only 1 healthy season removed from that...and he's shown a lot of bounce back capability during his career.  In return I receive a two controllable RP's to replace a couple of dumpster fires I've had in those roster spots this year.  Maldonado is simply a back-up that I don't expect a lot from...but he might have a little upside if he benefits from additional playing time in Houston.

The Giants get another hometown player in Evan Longoria, and hopefully, he can get back a little of the swagger he’s had.  At the end of the season the Giants will lose Encarnación, so adding Longoria’s bat will certainly be a plus. 

The extra $10.0m for three years is offset by not having to pay as much for a Brandon Belt extension (because of his latest injury) and I free up a couple of roster spots for other players.
