Title: Decrease Prospect Extension Savings
Post by: GypsieDeathBringer on April 05, 2018, 12:09:01 PM
I've been looking at the contracts signed by NHL guys like Pastrnak, Ehlers, Matheson, Eichel, Severson, Horvat, Wennberg, Draisaitl, etc and to keep current with the NHL climate I think we should reduce the savings benefited from our extension.

Right now we get a 30% discount, and back when we came up with the idea that was spot on.  Guys were taking 5 year deals for about 70-75% (look up what Couturier, Hamonic, McDonagh, Josh Bailey, Landeskog signed for back in the day) of what an equally producing veteran would make.  Now they are signing for 6+ years and the % is about 85-95% of an equally producing veteran.

With larger batches of prospect extensions coming up in the next year or 2 that extra 15% we currently save is going to really throw off how comparable we are to the NHL.

I'd say we make prospect extensions at 85% of the listed extension value going forward.

I'm not opposed.  The NHL has changed since we started.  It's younger and faster.  And those young and fast players are getting paid.

I just have a little difficulty parsing this with the other ideas we discussed a couple months ago.  I was going to bring that all back up this offseason to see where everyone is at on the changes we were mulling over.

Are we using 70 or 85% discount?

No, normal rules apply.

Extensions won't change this year.  Once I clear my queue of offseason 'things to do' I'll be re-igniting the debate about certain changes.  None of which will be immediate.
