TOP 25 WORST CONTRACTS in FNHL (May 2013)
« on: May 05, 2013, 03:00:02 PM »
Thought it'd be a good idea to build off the 2011-12 TOP 25 Worst Contracts in FNHL and post a 2012-13 update.

At the end of Franchise NHL's 3rd year, we've still got some contracts floating around that seem over inflated especially in light of the 2013-14 salary cap coming down to $64.3m from the 2011-12 value of $70.3m.

Here's a list of the 25 worst player contracts i've noticed in FNHL as we prep rosters for the off-season + pending 2013 Free Agency period which starts August 11th:

  • :TBL: RW - David Jones, $6.3m (2014-2015) - a good Amnesty Buy Out candidate
  • :CLG: D - Jay Bouwmeester, $6.7m (2013-2014) - paid Top 5 $$ but doesn't perform like one
  • :NAS: LW - Marcus Folingo, $6.0m (2015-16) - 2012 FA bidding war target
  • :CLG: C - Artem Anisimov, $6.0m (2014-2015) - paid like a "Sedin"
  • :NYR: C - Mikeal Backlund, $4.7m (2014-2015) - still hasn't done anything in NHL
  • :ANA: D - Luca Sbisa, $4.2m (2014-2015) - hasn't produced much
  • :NYR: D - Zybnek Michalek, $4.0m (2014-2015) - needs a contract "re-set"
  • :CHI-NHL: D - Nick Schultz, $3.5m (2013-2014) - over-priced 2012 FA signing
  • :PHI-NHL: D - Ron Hainsey, $4.5m (2012-2013) - at least his deal is ending
  • :STL-NHL: D - Erik Johnson, $4.5m (2014-2015) - failing to live up to his potential
  • :EDM: D - Tom Gilbert, $4.0m (2013-2014) - worth $$ in real NHL but not fantasy
  • :BUF-NHL: D - Steve Montador, $3.7m (2013-2014) - didn't play this season
  • :DET-NHL: RW - Ryan Smyth, $4.0m (2013-2014) - ready for retirement in fantasy
  • :NYI: C - Tuomo Ruutu, $5.4m (2014-2015) - injured so much in 2012-13
  • :TBL: LW - Ryan Malone, $4.5m (2014-2015) - barely on the ice to earn contract
  • :NYR: LW - Evander Kane, $9.0m (2016-2017) - only because NYR allowed him to slip into FA only to resign him at a 35% premium
  • :BUF-NHL: LW - Dany Heatley, $7.5m (2013-2014) - lost his mojo a couple of yrs ago
  • :CLS: C - Brooks Laich, $5.3m (2014-2015) - declining production due to injuries + age
  • :CAR-NHL: RW - Devin Setoguchi, $5.8m (2014-2015) - another yr, another underwhelming season
  • :CLG: LW - Sergei Kostitsyn, $5.7m (2014-2015) - NHL team rebuilding + stresses defence
  • :MON-NHL: C - Michael Cammalleri, $6.0m (2013-2014) - not same "Cammi" as past + now his NHL team is rebuilding
  • :NAS: C - Paul Statsny, $6.6m (2014-2015) - hasn't lively up to the value of his contract
  • :TOR-NHL: LW - Bobby Ryan, $8.4m (2014-2015) - type of contract that hand-cuffs a team
  • :MON-NHL: LW - Matt Moulson, $8.0m (2015-2016) - a bit over-priced but productive
  • :FLO: D - Alex Pietrangelo, $6.8m (2015-2016) - ordinary yr + didn't deserve stud contract

* Goalies were not included on this list as they have significant value in this goalie starved league so the likes of :WIN: Bryzgalov $13.7m, :DAL-NHL: Crawford $12.0m, :MIN-NHL: Anderson $10.0m, :NAS: Montoya $6.7m,  :VAN: Mason $5.0m, :VAN: Garon $5.0m, :NAS: Dekanich $4.7m will only be listed in this footnote.

lots of guys on this list that could use an Amnesty Buy Out.

there are also a number of bad contracts for defensemen.
i've learned that sometimes it's best to let the player walk to Free Agency instead of handing them a big extension.

#8 Nick Schultz was a bad contract we took on to do a deal with :ANA:

We just cut his head off and dumped the body into the ravine past the train tracks. The body's still warm. LOL

after Fleury's performance in the last 2 games,  Vok should be the starter.  I love and hate Fleury.  We have a Rhinna /Chris Brown thing going on.

received an extension and will earn $3.9m (2013-2016).

Quote
8. :CHI-NHL: D - Nick Schultz, $3.5m (2013-2014) - over-priced 2012 FA signing

received a 1-yr buy out and might have a tough time getting a new deal in FNHL.

Quote

contract expired and was recently signed to a 2-yr 0.2m deal by :NAS:

Quote
20. :CLG: LW - Sergei Kostitsyn, $5.7m (2014-2015) - NHL team rebuilding + stresses defence

signed on with the KHL and suddenly became expendable this off-season and received a 1yr buyout.

Quote
21. :MON-NHL: C - Michael Cammalleri, $6.0m (2013-2014) - not same "Cammi" as past + now his NHL team is rebuilding

the league handed him an Amnesty Buyout deal and is currently a pursued free agent getting interest from 3 teams :DET-NHL: :NYI: :NJD:

I am fine with the Tuomo Ruutu contract.  He may have been injured but when he did play he has my 2nd best points per game player on the team and for much less money

Ruutu is like Havlat. Studs when they play.
Or should I say when they're healthy enough to play.

  • Alpha5: That's what I mean by limited assets
    Today at 09:09:53 AM
  • Brent: And that's why I haven't traded Carr yet.  Someone doesn't have a QB or thinks they'll get one in FA/draft and might be left wanting.
  • Daddy: @Alpha if a team in MLB LIVE has two starting 1Bs then there is also a team without one.
  • ldsjayhawk: @jwalker I make like 2-3 trades a year for each of my baseball teams, maybe.  I'll tell you part of the reason I don't trade.  Every trade discussion starts out with the other team wanting my top prospect regardless of what I am trading for.  I am not trading Jackson Holliday for your backup catcher who is going to play 20 games this year.

  • Alpha5: Nah cause position eligibility. 1B/OF, 1B,3B etc

  • Alpha5: And maybe you should trade Jackson Holiday lolol

  • Brent: In an offsite league, I inquired about Mason Miller and the guy asked for Jackson Holliday.
  • dbreer23: Is it like a 4 team redraft league?
  • dbreer23: Cris, there is a reason that you are a good owner, bc you can discern a value deal vs. a BS deal. Not all owners are that savvy. They will eventually leave...
  • Brent: Nope, 32-team contract league.
  • ldsjayhawk: I don't have Holiday.  Just used him as an example since he was the #1 prospect
    Today at 12:56:05 PM
  • ldsjayhawk: @Alpha I do make trades.  I am just not giving up the entire farm to land a guy I can get out of the FA pool
    Today at 12:59:21 PM
  • ldsjayhawk: Trading should be a win-win situation for both teams.
  • dbreer23: Agreed. I think the Devers deal in FGM is a good example of that. Devers gives SD some now (and future) pop, giving up substantial pieces to get him (Mayo, Keith, and one other).
  • Brent: I had Holliday in FGM before I stepped away.
  • Brent: I am glad I cut back on leagues, I was spread too thin.
  • Jwalkerjr88: @idsjayhawk i understand that. To be clear, i wasnt judging anyone. I just know in NFL Live, you cant just draft 1-7 rds every year and sign a few FAs and be the champion. It wont happen
    Today at 01:52:08 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: Trading isnt easy. But neither is winning
    Today at 01:52:22 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: If you made a list of the most aggressive gms to have stepped foot in nfl live, you will notice the champions will be among them
    Today at 01:53:06 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: You arent gonna win every trade and you HAVE to have a plan. Ive made some horrible trades. I have every year
    Today at 01:53:50 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: Carolina has kyren williams right now cause i traded him for a 2nd and a 4th. Id rather have kyren today lol
    Today at 01:54:28 PM
  • Brent: Agreed.  I have Amon Ra St. Brown and Aiyuk because I traded JJ.  I couldn't have acquired a player like ASB where I was picking in the 1st so I down tiered at WR to make a trio of Chase, ASB and Aiyuk instead of JJ, Chase and fill in the blank.
  • ldsjayhawk: That is probably even more true in baseball since your drafts don't payoff for 5 years or so.  And I will admit my conservatism may be the reason I only have one championship here at ProFSL
    Today at 02:10:04 PM
  • BayAreaBallers: jwalkerjr88 is right
  • BayAreaBallers: on that u havat trade a bit here and there
    Today at 02:25:57 PM
  • BayAreaBallers: although my last draft class and fa class kinda lead me to a run so it can happen
    Today at 02:27:21 PM
  • Brent: Yeah, it does help to have a big draft class and available cap.
  • Brent: I'm contemplating doing a complete tear down in NFL Live and rebuild.  Honestly, I probably should have postered for it to be this season.  I still might, but I would legit need to go into the draft with 3-4 top 10 picks/+ many others.
  • Brent: postured
  • Jwalkerjr88: Yea nailing drafts and some key FAs helps too. But if you remember BAB you traded alvin kamara for the rams 1-7 draft picks. So the extra picks helped you nail the 2023 draft the way you did
    Today at 03:13:02 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: Its the combination of all three that is required is what im saying
    Today at 03:13:31 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: And brent a tear down with you assets would look interesting. Personally i just think you need break one big asset down into 3 good ones and move carr and go from there. But you have an A1 nfl mind so im sure you will nail whatever it is you decide
    Today at 03:14:39 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: *your
  • BayAreaBallers: very good pt yes i did gain lot of capital which propelled me to make more moves from that trade
    Today at 03:34:25 PM
