TOP 25 WORST PLAYER CONTRACT IN FRANCHISE NHL
after spending a week reviewing rosters and calculating cap space in preparation for Free Agency + the upcoming season, i noticed plenty of bad player contracts.
here's a list of the 25 worst player contracts i've noticed in FNHL as we get underway with the 2012 Free Agency period.
- :ANA: G - Rick DiPietro, $4.5m (2017-2018) - long and limited production from Glass Rick
- :ANA: D - Dustin Byfuglien, $9.0m (2015-2016) - difficult to move, but young enough to make it worthwhile... maybe
- :ANA: RW - Nicolay Zherdev, $5.0m (2013-2014) - big cap hit for a KHL player
- :CAR-NHL: RW - Devin Setoguchi, $5.8m (2014-2015) - not really earning his contract value
- :CHI-NHL: LW - Lauri Korpikoski, $5.5m (2014-2015) - his name is "Lauri" for cryin' out loud!
- :DAL-NHL: G - Corey Crawford, $12.0m (2015-2016) - a rare position but an example of last season's FA period overspending on goalies
- :DET-NHL: C - Logan Couture, $9.3m (2014-2015) - a huge contract to takes up too much cap space and handcuffed the team last season
- :DET-NHL: LW - Andrew Ladd, $7.0m (2014-2015) - over-priced FA acquisition
- :EDM: D - Paul Martin, $5.0m (2013-2014) - never turned out to be the second coming of Scott Niedermayer
- :FLO: LW - Nikolai Kulemin, $4.9m (2014-2015) - errrr, i misjudged his extension cost
- :LA: LW - Blake Comeau, $5.5m (2014-2015) - a 2011 FA that was paid for his potential
- :MIN-NHL: G - Craig Anderson, $10.0m (2015-2016) - another example of over-paying in a goalie starved league
- :MON-NHL: LW - Matt Moulson, $8.0m (2015-2016) - he would have to place in the top ten in forward scoring to deserve that contract
- :MON-NHL: RW - Troy Brouwer, $6.5m (2014-2015) - right wings are rare but not that rare
- :NAS: G - Mark Dekanich, $4.7m (2013-2014) - projected as a potential starter or at least backup in Columbus last season, this player never panned out in 2011-12... maybe things will be different with the Jets?
- :NAS: G - Al Montoya, $6.7m (2013-2014) - another severely over-priced back-up goalie that once had a hot-streak in the NHL
- :NYI: C - Vincent Lecavalier, $7.7m (2017-2018) - lengthy deal for a veteran on the back-9 of his career
- :NYI: RW - David Backes, $8.0m (2015-2016) - good player but likely the result of frenzied FA bidding war
- :NYR: C - Mikeal Backlund, $4.7m (2014-2015) - not sure he's done anything to deserve this contract
- :NYR: D - Zybnek Michalek, $4.0m (2014-2015) - expectations were high when he signed with the Pens but didn't end up producing offensively
- :PIT-NHL: RW - Zach Parise, $9.0m (2015-2016) - just a big fat salary that sucks cap space and one few teams can take on in a potential trade
- :PHO: C - Cody Hodgson, $5.5m (2014-2015) - over-paid based on prospect potential
- :TBL: RW - David Jones, $6.3m (2014-2015) - severely over-paid based on half a season's hot streak that came back in 2010-11
- :VAN: G - Chris Mason, $5.0m (2013-2014) - more goalie over-spending
- :WIN: G - Ilya Bryzgalov, $13.7m (2015-2016) - finally the biggest contract floating around in Franchise NHL ... how does reket23 feel about this guy really!?!
there you go... a fun list or a warning to all teams during Free Agency ... you decide. :judge:
can't wait to see who'll end up on the 2013-14 Worst Contracts list. :toast:

These goalie contracts are crazy, it almost makes me glad I don't have a starting goalie.
I will say that I don't mind paying Parise 9m; at least its not for the next 13 years.
-
The top 3 of the worst contracts belongs to the worst team ..... coincidence?
-
the list wasn't ranked otherwise Ilya Bryzgalov's contract as well as Corey Crawford's deal with be #1 and #2. :judge:
actually, last season's worst team :OTT: didn't make the list which was interesting. neither did the 3rd worst team, :NJD: ... something to think about.

so far i've seen reasonable contracts handed out to defensemen after 8 days of free agency. it's a good sign.

A lot less quality and cap to go around this time.

definitely a lot less cap for teams to go shoppin' with.
i wonder if ppl would be ready for a roll-back if it were to occur in 2013-14 pending actual NHL/NHLPA CBA contract talks.

You don't win prizes for saving the most money.

7. :DET-NHL: C - Logan Couture, $9.3m (2014-2015) - a huge contract to takes up too much cap space and handcuffed the team last season[/li][/list]
I have to say this Couture contract is from another planet. Even if the guy produces 200 points a season you could sign 3 average players for 2.0m a piece to produce 80 points each for a total of 240 points.
9.3m for 1 player versus
6.0m for 3 players
-3.0m for 2 extra players
This is hypothetical but it's grounded in some facts that I've seen on Fantrax and via several team rosters I've looked at for trade purposes.

bryzzz got 25th=)
but i hope he will do better this season...anyway better to overpay on starting goalie than on skaters
-
Demand will always exceed supply in FA without a cap on # of extensions. That Coultier contract is not that bad with 30 teams looking to add a 35/35 player still on his way up. Even if Detroit extends him they might only save 1m. That contract is still a deal when you consider 30pt D-men @5m. Most teams are averaging @ 30mil to staff a defense.

I've never seen such craziness outside the NHL. I'm glad Corey Crawford's $12 million annual cap hit doesn't sit on my books. Word is he's on the bubble this season and might get bumped permanently from the starters role.
-
crawford was a tough pill to swallow but I'm running out of time with my team and I needed goalie help bad.. lol But atleast I got to move a terrible contract back tooo backlund....
-
:WAS-NHL: nominates
D Mike Komisarek 4.5M (luckily its expiring) and has 3.8 fps this year :puke:

Gotta say even though Patrick Sharp is weighing down my Hawks payroll with his 8.3m cap hit, he's totally worth every dollar!
