Title: Trade: Pelicans and Kings
Post by: Brent on January 26, 2021, 09:23:12 PM
The Pelicans and Kings have agreed on the following trade.  The Pels are building for the future and assets that are performing now aren't part of the build plan.  We are moving a proven stud in DeMar who was our prize during FA and LeVert who get buckets and Nunn who is a solid contributor for a couple young lottery tickets that have struggled so far in the move to the NBA.  A healthy Heyward is a nice addition, but he is older.  He does pay well with my other 3 guy in Duncan as both can be a part of the rebuild.

Pelicans trade:

DeMar DeRozan $11M(2022)
Caris LeVert $1M(2021)
Kendrick Nunn $0.6M (2023)

for

Kings trade:
Deni Avdija $3.2M(2024)
Killian Hayes $3.8M (2024)
Gordon Heyward $12M (2023)

:iatp: Nice blockbuster. Seems like a good move for both teams for what they are building plus prefence on Derozan/Heayward.  Levert and Hayes both X factors due to health, but sounds like both can make full recovery eventually.

Just to be clear this trade was agreed upon after LeVert's injury was made known, correct?

Honestly pretty on the fence regardless because it feels like Pelicans is running away like a bandit here. Hayward is better than DeRozan in most respects, but I'll admit injury risk is more a concern with the former. LeVert is an expiring and worth nothing this season, Nunn is playing worse than last season, and Kings is giving up 2 guys who were lottery picks a few months ago. I don't see how Kings chalks this up as a win, but I'm willing to let managers play how they want to.

This is a very good point, Levert on expiring contract while potentially not playing this year does swing the deal significantly in favor of Pelicans. I was seeing 6-8 weeks is an estimated earliest return with expected full recovery. It does mean he might be able to contribute for stretch run/playoffs this year but it's definitely not a sure thing and we may not see him until next season.

Technically aside from Fox RFA decision, Kings will have cap, but not sure Levert is really worth the franchise tag (assuming health wise he is good, SG is still pricey not sure his talent is really at the tag level being 29.3m for SG). Guess there is the small benefit he will have 10% discount if he wins him back as FA.

All this does bring up something I've actually been mulling over a few days now but only really looking into specifics today. What I have in mind would make this deal better, plus might be good for league as a whole but it is a potentially big change so do want to hear feedback. I am still trying to put together a clear proposal to run by everyone but my thinking is as follows:

We allow a 2nd franchise tag at exactly 50% of current tag each year, with the major catch being the player on the cheaper franchise tag must be ranked outside a certain rank by Fantrax ranking for the specific position (currently thinking guys ranked top 15 have to use existing franchise tag, anyone outside of top 15 can be kept at the 50% tag).

In this case, as an example Levert would be allowed to be kept at 14.7m which is much more reasonable.

I won't go on about this in this trade thread as I should be able to get a proposal up here sometime tonight after work and then give some time to hear feedback.

The option to use current tag is definitely available just expensive, but I guess can do a 1 year tag as an option, assume it would be more more than in FA but maybe FA would be more years at a number that you don't like.

We'll see the verdict on second tag but regardless if it does not pass, I do think this deal is ok with no true veto and I generally don't like vetoing deals unless they are really bad. This one is still passable even with Levart factor.

Let me know where to place everyone and can process @Brent @DinkyCarsPlus

Due to Levert situation Kings are backing out of deal. Unfortunately it's messy situation but since he is new GM and apparently was unaware of how long Levert will miss so deal is nixed.
