Extension examples
« on: July 01, 2011, 10:45:34 AM »
I will post a few examples of extensions to help you guys figure this out.  Here's the first:

Ok, here's how it works, Lidstrom is a good example:

The rankings next to the values correlate to our league scoring rankings.  So to look up a player go to our league on Fantrax then to Players and sort by Fpts (it should be sorted by Fpts by default).  You need to check both the 10/11 ranks and the 09/10 ranks.  Lidstrom ranks 6th amongst D players in 10/11 and 10th in 09/10.  The higher ranking is 6th and this is what will be used.  Now go to the extension values under Defensive players and look up the 6th rank player.  The extension value is $6.4M.  Lidstrom's actual contract is for $6.2M so his extension in DNHL is quite accurate.  It won't always be perfect but should generally be in the ballpark.

Now you decide on his contract length.  The contract limits are as follows:

<= $1.4m, 2 years
$1.5m - $5.4m, 3 years
$5.5m - $7.9m, 4 years
>=$8m, 5 years (the overall limit)

So Lidstrom can be signed to a 1, 2, 3 or 4 year deal.  He cannot be signed to a 5 year deal as the yearly salary has to exceed $7.9M to qualify for a 5 year deal.

The $6.4M extension is the yearly value.  So no matter how many years you sign him he will earn $6.4M per year, not that amount divided by the number of years.  This might be confusing as compared to free agent bidding where all bids are for total contract value.  If you win a free agent bid at $6.4M you can sign the player to: 1y @ $6.4, 2y @ $3.2 or 3y @ $2.1.  A $6.4M FA bid cannot be broken down to a 4 year since a 4 year deal needs to exceed $5.4M per year.

Make sense?

Just a note:  Remember when you're looking up ranks for forwards to sort them by their position, LW, RW or C.  We're using Fantrax's eligibility rules for positions.  So even though a guy like Seguin played a lot of wing last year he is considered a C by Fantrax and should be extended as such.

Also if a player is eligible for multiple positions you'll need to find his highest rank amongst all eligible positions.  This is the rank value he will extend at.

One other note:  I haven't loaded rosters yet.  Once I do you'll need to sort by All Players rather than All Available Players to get the correct ranks.

I thought they were based off of the two years, like an average of the two?
Not just the best year they had of the last two (or three depending on time of year).

Nah just the players best rank of the last 2 seasons.  I didn't want to over-complicate it by using the average.

Question:

James Wisniewski D 09-10 ranked # 50, 10-11 ranked # 15 = 4.8.
Just signed by new team for 33M over 6 years.
Does new contract affect my extending cost or is 4.8M per year my cost?
This is all new to me, when is the draft and where would I indicate extensions?
Thanks.

Their real contracts have no bearing on our extensions.  The 4.8 price isn't right though.  It's based on the higher ranking of #15, so it would be $5.5M to extend.   The draft will be in a week or so, I'll have a firm date for you shortly.  You can post your extension in the Transactions board (See EJ's post for reference).

Oddly enough our extension is exactly the same as his actual cap hit number @ 33M for 6!

I hope everyone here can add 3.5 and 3.1 and then divide by 2.

(The answer is 3.3  :win: )

  • dbreer23: Agreed. I think the Devers deal in FGM is a good example of that. Devers gives SD some now (and future) pop, giving up substantial pieces to get him (Mayo, Keith, and one other).

  • Brent: Agreed.  I have Amon Ra St. Brown and Aiyuk because I traded JJ.  I couldn't have acquired a player like ASB where I was picking in the 1st so I down tiered at WR to make a trio of Chase, ASB and Aiyuk instead of JJ, Chase and fill in the blank.
  • ldsjayhawk: That is probably even more true in baseball since your drafts don't payoff for 5 years or so.  And I will admit my conservatism may be the reason I only have one championship here at ProFSL

  • Brent: I'm contemplating doing a complete tear down in NFL Live and rebuild.  Honestly, I probably should have postered for it to be this season.  I still might, but I would legit need to go into the draft with 3-4 top 10 picks/+ many others.

  • Jwalkerjr88: Yea nailing drafts and some key FAs helps too. But if you remember BAB you traded alvin kamara for the rams 1-7 draft picks. So the extra picks helped you nail the 2023 draft the way you did
