Stuff That Has Changed From Last Season
« on: January 12, 2013, 03:29:01 PM »
Hey guys,

Here are some things that have changed in regards to roster management from last season:
Minor League Cap - Has dropped from $25.0m to $20.0m

Goalie Cap - Has been added and there is a 5 goalie max on the major league rosters

Salary Cap - is remaining at $70.2m for this season but will be dropping to $64.3m next season

Things we need to discuss.
- Playoff format, do we have the same format or do we change it. Currently it is a eight team format but I would like to do a divisional round somehow but not sure how to format it or how to do it without taking up too many weeks.

Could we possibly discuss the Retired & Moving Players rule? Maybe make an adjustment?  Or is this something you feel is fine the way it is?

I'd like to suggest next seasons player extensions be further reduced to reflect market value with a cap of $64.3M. A 10% reduction will mimic the effect the cap has on free-agency and keeps extensions as a reasonable option.

Essentially I am saying we should 'peg' current values to the existing salary cap and raise or lower them along with future cap changes.

My only concern with changing extension values is that if cap goes up the next season then basically there was a cheap extension period and extension values would go back up next season.

If extensions are not pegged they will have to be adjusted arbitrarily which could be just as awkward. Taken to the extreme if the cap rises to say $100M per season, then current values for top tier players are all very low. While nothing is perfect I think pegging current values strikes the right balance between function and simplicity.

Keep in mind that a GM could as easily extend a player one year only to see the cap fall the next. There will always be winners and losers, but the way I've suggested guarantees that the gains or losses will stay relatively small.
