scoring-confused
« on: April 07, 2015, 06:08:32 PM »
OK, I read over the new scoring system before posting this, but I am a little confused.  I knew we were changing the scoring system to even out batters vs pitchers, but did we also change from a "total points per game" league to a "scoring category/roto style" league??

Thanks,

No it's a head to head league as it's always been.  The matchups are weekly starting Mondays and running thru Sunday.  Naturally the first game of the season is rolled into the first full week.

The scoring is designed to reflect what the individual does on his own merits. Removing runs, RBIs, wins, losses, etc largely team dependent stats was the means to doing so.

thanks for the quick response as always, but i'm sorry, I don't think I worded my question correctly.  I guess my main question is: at the end of the week, am I looking at total points to figure a win or loss,  like last year? or should I be totaling up categories that I win in a particular week for my W or L, like in a Yahoo league.

thanks,

The variance in scoring from day to day is pretty extreme.

Yes it can be, most of that is moving away from the 1 point per system.

I think the scoring for pitchers could use some work. I know we can't change anything until at least 2016 at the earliest but the negative points in particular dont make sense for pitchers.

Example from a couple of days ago....

Shoemaker gives up 5ER on 7 hits, 3Bb, 2K in 3 innings
De la Rosa gives up 7ER on 9 hits, 1BB, 3K in 2 innings

Looking at the lines they seem close with De La Rosa a little worse giving up 2 more earned runs in one fewer inning.

Fantrax scoring?
Shoemaker  (-25.6)
De La Rosa (-5.6)

The difference was Shoemaker gave up 2 HRs while De La Rosa didnt give up a HR

The way the scoring is now a pitcher gets roughly the same negative score for giving up a solo HR as they do for giving up 4 runs on 5 consecutive doubles.

There should be less focus on HRs in the pitcher scoring, more on earned runs (which there is none)

The league prides itself on accuracy and realism but shoemaker didn't put his team in a much worse position to win than De La Rosa

Man this is a tough one because:
1) I absolutely agree, but
2) I can't imagine a better scoring system where we won't be comparing two pitching performances in the future and asking why the delta between the two scoring outcomes.

I know the way it's set up now it measures the pitcher's performance and takes out the defense behind them, assumes all runners are stranded (except HR) and takes all the win/loss 'game of chance' stuff out of it.

Tough one.  I'd be interested to hear alternatives but I understand the effort that went into the current scoring setup.
