Giants - DBacks Trade
« on: July 12, 2010, 11:33:15 PM »
The Giants and Dbacks have reached a deal.

Giants receive:

OF Griffey Jr., Ken, $0.5m (2010)
SP Halladay, Roy, $13.5m (2010)
C Hernandez, Ramon, $3.5m (2010)

DBacks receive:

SP Francis, Jeff, $3.5m (2010)
OF Cuddyer, Michael, $7.5m (2010)
C Molina, Benji, $5.5m (2010)
OF Cust, Jack, $2m (2010) - I will pay 1 mil salary

I did this deal to acquire Halladay.  It is hard for me to pass up one of the best pitchers in baseball.  Griffey is a throw in to even out salary.  I am rebuilding my team and I am starting with my pitching staff.  I feel this gives me one of the best pitching staffs now in the league.  I feel I can replace my offensive guys.

DBacks to confirm.

Approved.

Interesting deal with all player that ARZ receives needed resigned.  I understand the teams that could afford Halladay in the future are limited.  It is nice to see Halladay go to a team that is planning to have him for the future and not just a contender rental.

I wanted Halladay bad, but I couldn't bring myself to pay the man 23mil for 5yrs (he'll be 38).

Giants will probably bid on him in restricted free agency.  I doubt someone would offer $115m.  Last year, the highest contract given out was by the Phillies: $90m to Verlander.

The Giants have the right to re-sign Halladay prior to July 31st to a 1 year deal for 23m.  I believe that is what the RC agreed to in terms of contract extensons.

Yes you are correct Roy, however most teams don't have an extra 23mil just sitting around in a jar.

In that case, count me in for the bid war. This brings up a question of mine, say whoever wins the Halladay wins him for 20mil a year, now do the same minimum years rule apply?

OFA/RFA is just like FA right now - final bid becomes value of total contract.  The minimum rule is only for extensions.  The maximum rule is for extensions and FA.
